T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. HALL, a subject of Great Britain, and a resident of lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Tool Holders, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices of that class commonly availed of, in connection with so-called metal planers and analogous metal-treating machines, for supporting in operative position a plurality of metal-cutting tools, such devices being appropriately designated multiple tool holders.
The object of this invention is to provide a tool-holder of the character above indicated, which shall be simple and comparatively inexpensive as regards construction,
durable, efficient and reliable in practical service, which shall embody tool-receiving openings arranged in a plane common thereto and oblique to the longitudinal axis of the holder proper, and which shall possess certain well-defined advantages over prior analogous devices.
The invention consists in the combina tions, details and parts whereby, together with the novel disposition and relative arrangement of said parts, the attainment of the foregoing object is rendered practicable, all of which will be hereinafter more specifically referred to and pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference-numerals denote like parts throughout the respective views, as to which:
Figure 1 is a side'elevation, partly broken away, of a tool holder embodying my said improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation view, partly in section, showing more clearly the disposition of certain minor parts of the device relatively to the operating-rod thereof. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the construction as illus'ra-ted in Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, I make use of a shank-like body 2, which merges at its lower extremity into a laterally and downwardly extended intermediate section 2, and which section, in turn, merges Specification of Letters Patent.

at its lower extremity into a fixed, toolcarrying head 2, saidbody, section 2 and tool carrying head 2 being formed integral as by the process of forging. The body 2 is provided with a central, longitudinal bore 3, which is enlarged, as at 3, to form an annular shoulder 3"; and there is dovetailed to the head 2, at its inner face and for moven'ient upwardly and downwardly relatively thereto, an adjustable, tool-carrying head a. More specifically in this connection, the head 2 is provided at its inner face with an elongated guide 4, said guide being formed integral with the head 2, undercut longitudinally at its opposite sides, to form opposite ways, as at f, and affording, at its face most distant from the head 2, a smooth-walled, central, longitudinal channel 5, semi-circular in an endwise view thereof; while the adjustable head a is provided at its inner face with a general, cen tral, longitudinal recess, whose opposite side-walls are undercut to slidingly engage the ways at t, whereby the heads 2 and t are adjustably held together, and said general recess, provided at the inner face of the head f, affording a central, longitudinal. channel 5, semi-circular in an endwise view thereof, and provided along the wall thereof, with appropriate segmental screwthreads, said semi-circular channels, afforded by the opposite heads 2 and e, as above specified, forming, when the parts shall have been duly assembled, a complete bore, coinciding in diameter with the diameter of the enlarged portion aforenamed of the bore 3, arranged in axial alinement therewith, and presenting screw-threads of a segmental form only, and only along that portion thereof afforded by the adjustable head 4. I further make use of an operatingrod, which comprises a main portion 5, rotatably occupying the bore 3, and an enlarged portion 6, continuously screwthreaded from one end to the opposite end thereof, and rotatably occupying at one and the same time the enlarged portion 3 of the bore 8, and the bore aforenamed intermediate of the heads 2 and 4 and formed as hereinbefore explained, the screw-threads presented by the portion 6, of said operating-rod, engaging at all times the segmental screw-threads contained within the channel 5, as 'hereinbefore stated, and whereby the adjustable head 4 may be caused to move upwardly, relatively to the head 2", upon said operatingrod being rotated in one direction, and downwardly relatively to the'head 2, upon said operating-red being rotated in the opposite direction; this operation of the parts following the absence of threads from the channel 5, and the presence of the segmental threads aforenamed within the channel 5, all as will be readily understood.
The guide f traverses vertically the inner face of the head 9, from the lower edge to the top extremity thereof, and also more or less the adjacent curved inner face of the intermediate section 2, thereby markedly enhancing the strength of the device as a whole. The portions 5 and 6 are integrally connected endwise, thereby, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1, affording for the operatingrod aforenamed, an annular shoulder which, in cooperation with the shoulder 3", obviates undue upward displacement of said operating-rod, and undue downward displacement thereof is prevented by the collar 6, the latter being mounted on said operating-rod, pinned thereto, as at the point 6, for movement therewith, and overlying the top of the body 2. The collar 6 is provided, by preference with micrometric degree marks, as at 7 and for cooperation with said marks, the body 2'is provided with an index character, as at 7, the foregoing measuring features being pro vided for predetermining minute adjustments of the head 4, as in common practice. The operating-rod aforenamecl projects upwardly somewhat beyond the collar 6, to receive a handle, 7", the latter being secured to said rod by means of a pin, as at 8.
Tool-receiving openings are formed, one in the head 2", indicated by 8, and one in the head 4, indicated by 8. These openings, S, 8", are arranged approximately side by side, and occupy one and the same plane, the latter being upwardly and rearwardly inclined relatively to the front face of the device. Tools, as the roughing tool 9 and finishing tool 9, having been inserted, say, the former in the opening 8 and the latter in the opening 8, are held, respectively, against displacement by means of suitable fasteners, as the set- screws 8, 9". It may be here pointed out that, in the operation of my improved tool holder, either of the tools 9, 9, may be separately set for a cutting effect in the usual manner on the stock or material undergoing treatment, or both may be relatively set in such a manner as to insure, at one and the same operation, a roughing and finishing effect on said stock or material. Also, where eitheror both of the tools aforenamed are availed of for the purpose stated, the action of same, on said stock or material, and by reason of the side-by-side disposition and uniform inclination thereof, may be continued closely into the apex of the angle of an angular piece of stock or material, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that my improved. tool holder is well adapted for the purposes for which it is intended. and further that the same may be modified to a considerable extent, particularly as regards the means made use of for slidingly attaching the adjustable head t to the fixed head 2", and likewise the means for effecting various adjustments of said head 4, relatively to the head 2", without departing from the spirit and principle of my invention, as set forth in the annexed claims.
I claim:
1. A tool holder comprising an elongated body, a laterally and downwardly extending intermediate section, and a fixed head, said body,section and head being formed integral: an adjustable head freely engaging said fixed head, for movement upwardly and downwardly along the inner face thereof; and means for effecting and controlling the adjustments of said adjustable head, said heads being adapted, each to receive and sustain a metal-cutting tool.
2. A tool holder comprising an elongated body, a laterally and downwardly extending intermediate section, and a fixed head, said body, section and head being formed integral; an adjustable head freely engaging said fixed head, for movement upwardly and downwardly along the inner face thereof; and means for effecting and controlling the adjustments of said adjustable head, said heads being adapted, jointly, to receive and sustain, in parallelism and uniformly inclined, metal-cutting tools.
3. A tool holder comprising an elongated body, a laterally and downwardly extending intermediate section, and afixed head, said body, section and head being formed integral, and the latter, said head, affording, at its inner face,opposite ways which overlie more or less the intermediate section aforenamed; an adjustable head slidingly engaging said ways for movement upwardly and downwardlytherealong; and means for effecting and controlling the adj ust-ments of said adjustable head said heads being adapted, each to receive and sustain a metal-cutting tool.
4. A tool holder comprising an elongated body having a longitudinal bore, a laterally and downwardly extending intermediate section, and a fixed, downwardly extending head, the latter affording at its inner face a guide having a central, longitudinal, smooth-walled channel arranged in axial alinement with the bore aforenamed, and said body, section and fixed head being formed integral; an operating-rod rotatably occupying said bore and the channel aforenamed; means for preventing longitudinal displacement of said operating-rod; means for actuating the same; and an adjustable head, the latter slidingly engaging said guide and having a threaded engagement with the operating-rod at'orenained, and said heads being adapted. each to receive and maintain a metal-cutting tool.
A tool holder comprising an elongated body having a central, longitudinal bore en larged near its lower extremity to form an annular shoulder, a laterally and downwardly extending intermediate section, and a fixed, downwardly extending head, the latter atiording at its inner face, a guide having a longitudinal, smooth-walled channel arranged in axial alinenient with the enlarged portion of the bore aforenained, said bodv, section and fixed head being formed intogral; an operating-rod rotatably occupying said here and the channel aforenamed and provided with an annular shoulder adapted to cooperate with the annular shoulder aforenained of said here, whereby displacement of said operating-rod upwardly is pre vented; a collar firmly mounted on said op erating-r0d near its upper extremity and 25 overlying the top of said body, whereby displacement of said operating-rod downwardly is prevented; means for actuating said operating-rod; and an adjust-able head, the latter slidingly engaging said guide and 30 having a threaded engagement with said operating-rod, and said heads being adapted, each to receive and maintain a metalcutting too-l.
6. A tool holder comprising a fixed head; 35 an additional head attached to said fixed head and adjustable relatively thereto; and means for ettecting and controlling the adjustments of said additional head, said heads jointly alii'ording tool-receiving openings arranged in parallelism and uniformly at an inclination upwardly and rearwardly with respect thereto.
