FRED P. CANFIELD, OF ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO, ASSIGNOB. TO THE I-IANLON TENT RING COMPANY, OF ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO, A CORPORATION.
FRAME FOR TENT-OPENINGS.
31 ,Ofiehliit).
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19,1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED P. CANFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Frames for Tent-Openings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rings for tents.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a metallic ring or plate having a stove pipe or ventilating opening, the said plate being provided with a plurality of rotatable locking fingers comprising substantially L-shaped members having their engaging portions of a suitable length. and which are adapted to be passed through openings in any seam of the tent to retain the plate upon the tent and to sustain the tent a distance away from the opening to prevent the said tent contacting with the stove pipe and thus becoming injured from the heat of the pipe.
I also propose to provide a device of this class which may, if desired, be used in connection with a second or face plate.
YVith the foregoing objects in view, and others of a similar nature which will appear as the nature of the invention progresses, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view illustrating my improvement in applied position upon a tent. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plate, the locking fingers being shown in full lines in the position to be inserted through the openings in the tent, and by dotted lines in their position to lock the plate upon the tent. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improv ment illustrating the employment of a second or face plate. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the plate. Fig. 6 is a sectional View upon the line 6-6 of Fig. 4:.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary tent. The tent, in the present instance, is provided with one or more substantially elliptical openings 2, which are arranged upon any of the seams of the tent. These openings are adapted to serve as a passage for a plurality of substantially L-shaped locking fingers which are provided upon a pipe ring or plate 4-. The plate, as illustrated in the figures of the drawings is of a substantially diamond shape and has its edges formed with a continuous bead 5. The plate adjacent the bead 5 is bent to provide a continuous rib 6, which is arranged upon what may be termed, the outer face of the plate. The plate is centrally provided with a circular opening 7 which is primarily adapted to provide a passage for a stove pipe, but the said opening may be employed for ventilating the tent if desired. The L-shaped locking fingers 3 comprise each an upper elongated arm 8 which is substantially beveled or inclined from its shorter arm 9, the said shorter arm being mounted for rotation upon the plate. By inclining or beveling the under face of the arm 8 it will be noted that when the said arm is swung over the fabric of the tent it will compress the saidv fabric against the rib 6 and the bead 5 to cause the fabric to bulge or form a ridge between the said rib and bead and thus effectively sustain the plate upon the tent. The arms 9 of the retaining fingers have their lower extremities reduced and passed through reduced openings provided in the plate. The projecting portions of the said arms are provided with washers 10 which effectively retain the arms upon the plate and sustain the same against accidental removal therefrom. The locking fingers 3 are positioned upon the plate in staggered relation to each other so that their shorter arms will contact with the edges provided in the elliptical opening of the tent.
In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 T have illustrated the plate or ring as provided with what may be termed a face plate. The face plate 12 is of a similar shape to the plate at and is provided with a central opening 13 which is adapted to register with the central opening provided by the said pipe 4. The plate is further provided with a plurality of elongated openings lei through which the L- shaped retaining members are adapted to project and upon the rotation of the said members the plate 12 is effectively retained upon the tent and adjacent the plate 4. The plate 12 has its edges provided with a continuous bead 15 and the said plate adjacent the bead is further formed with a continuous rib 16.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as Well as the advantages thereof, Will, it is thought, commend themselves to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain Without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination With a fabric body having an opening, of a pipe ring for said opening, said ring comprising a flattened plate having beaded edges and a rib adjacent its edges, L-shaped locking fingers arranged for rotation upon the plate, and the said fingers When rotated, adapted to engage With the fabric to compress the same against the bead and rib to bulge the fabric between the said bead and rib.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. V
