THROAT-PLATE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 169,1913.
Application filed November 26, 1906. Serial No. 345,184.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AMES R. MorrA'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illi- 5 nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Throat-Plates for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a de scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in sewing machines and has for its object to provide an improved throat plate which is especially adapted for stitching upon sleazy goods, and while as to some of its features it may be used in connection with various types of stitch forming mechanism, said improvements are more particularly adapted to machines for overedge stitching.
My invention consists in the novel parts and improvements hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1, is a top plan view of a throat plate, embodying my invention and showing the relation of the same, to the elements of an overedge stitching machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved throat plate. Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of my improved throat plate.
In the drawings the throat plate 1 is provided with the usual feed slots 2, 2, said feed slots extending longitudinal of the throat plate and permitting the feed dog of the sewing machine to pass through said slots and move the material longitudinally across said throat plate.
My improved throat plate is provided with a needle opening 8, and a thread slot 4:, extending therefrom, whereby overedge stitches may be fed from said needle opening. The needle opening, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, very nearly surrounds the needle, extending across the rear around and across the front of the needle in the line of feed. The thread slot leading from the needle opening, is of considerable less width than the diameter of the needle opening. The object of this particular form of needle opening and thread slot, is to better support the material operated upon. When operating upon sleazy goods, especially with a coarse thread, the tendency is to push the goods down through the needle opening, and when the needle begins its ascent, the goods move with the same, causing a failure on the part of the needle to throw out a proper loop for the needle loop spreader. As it is the fabric which holds the needle thread when the needle ascends, that causes the throw out of the needle loop. It is necessary that the diameter of the needle opening be sufficiently large to accommodate the needle and the thread carried thereby. The width of the thread slot however, need only be suflicient to allow the thread to pass freely. Therefore, by carrying the wall of the needle opening around in front of the needle in the line of feed, the fabric is supported practically on all sides of the needle, and yet sufficient space is left to allow the threads of the overedge stitches to be drawn from the needle opening.
The thread finger 5, around which the overedge stitches are formed by means of a needle 6, a spreader 7, and a thread carrying looper 8, as shown in the present embodiment of my invention, has its walls tapered in the direction of the feed, whereby the overedge stitches may be easily drawn therefrom. The inner side of said stitch finger is inclined to the line of feed from the needle opening to the end of said finger; that is, the slot at is arranged diagonally of the line of feed, by which arrangement the stitches around the stitch finger are deflected to one side the needle, so that in the descent of the needle it will not pierce the thread.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A throat plate for sewing machines, having a circular needle opening and a thread slot leading therefrom, the wall of said needle opening extending in front of and in rear of the needle in the line of feed, a stitch finger, over which stitches may be formed, the sides of said finger being in clined to the line of feed, and one of sald inclined sides, extending into said needle opening; substantially as described.
2. A throat plate for sewing machines, having a circular needle opening and a thread slot leading therefrom, the wall of said needle opening extending in front of and in rear of the needle in the line of feed, a stitch finger formed integrally with the throat plate, over which stitches may be formed, the sides of said finger being inclined to the line of feed, and one of said in-
