1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GLENN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan ofthe city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to registering devices and one of the objects of the invention is to construct a. registering device in which a reading may be printed or otherwise formed on a thin strip or sheet of paper and in which the totalizer or other recording means is normally obstructed from view.

Another object of the invention is to construct a cash registerwith a totalizer normally obstructed from view by means of a movable shutter and-also having an inking and printing means normally held in inoperative position. In the preferred construction the movable shutter and the inking and printing means are normally locked and capable of being moved from their normal position only by a removable key adapted to unlock the same.

This shutter E is held in normal position by the spring 6 and may be pushed from said normal position by the key 0. There is also carried within the casing an inking and shutter mechanism F having the end members 1 thereof slidably mounted in ways f supported on the casing. The inking of the totalizer is performed by the inking roller F and the end members f are connected by the bar or strip F 2 'extending'therebetween which servesas a shut-ter when the mechanism F is in its normal position.

There extends between the operating key, D and the inking and shutter mechanism F the link and lever mechanism G which serves as means to move the inking and shutter mechanism F from its normal position as shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 when the operating key is lowered to impress the strip or sheet of paper H,against the totalizer. This link and lever mechanism G comprises the bell crank lever g the straight lever 9 the link 9* extending between the opcratin'gkey and thebell crank lever, the link gextending between the bell crank lever and the straight lever g and the link 9 extending between the straight lever gand an end f of the inking and shutter mechanism F. 7

It will be observed from an inspection of D is depressed from its norma position that the shutter and inking mechanism F will be moved to the' so that the shutter F and the inking roller F will respectively be moved away from and across the totalizer.

thelever. The keyhole for this locking mechanism is indicated by the reference character d in Fig, 1. The operating key is returned to its normal position from the depressed or printing position by the tension spring (i clearly shown in Fig. 3.

The operation is as follows: The operating key .D is unlocked by a removable key which is inserted in the keyhole d and the operating key D is partially depressed.- This .partial movement will cause the inking and shutter means F to travel from its normal position a suflicient amount for the -totalizer to be inked and also a suflicient amount for the end member f to uncover the opening 0" at the side of the register whereby a stripof paper may be inserted through the opening 0 into the. space bet-ween the tot-alizer -C andthe movable shutter E on the key. After-the strip of paper is thus inserted a further de-' pression of the key will cause the shutter E to impress the paper against the"figures on the totalizer or the other-indicating charac-- ters and thus print uponthe paper the reading thereof. Should it be desired to take a reading of the totalizer directly by'the eye withoutprinting the same .on apiece of paper all that is necessary is to partially depress the key D omit passing the paperthrough the opening C, and 'whenthe key is partially depressed force the shutter E against the compression spring e by means of the shutter key 6 thereby removing the only obstruction existing between the talizer and the,window c'.

It is obvious that various forms and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

= I claim as my invention:-

9. In a cash registering device, the combination of a totalizer, an operating key having therein amember movable so as to permit the t otalizer to be-read, an inking means movable between said member and and an operating key having a spring' pressed shutter therein normally obstructing the totalizer -from view.

A registering device having in combination, a registering means, a shutter for normally obstructing the same from view, means for-moving the shutter from the normal obstruoting position, means for forming a print or impression of the reading of the registering means, and means for normally locking the printing or impressing means; the printing or impressing means being constructed and arranged so that a member thereof can be moved whereby the registering means can be read by the eye of the op erator at a time when the shdtter is moved from its normal obstructing position.

12. In a registering device the combination of registering means, movable means for obstructing the same from view, means for movin the same, means'for forming an impression or print of the reading of the registering means and means normally locked for preventing the taking of a reading from the registering means by either the operator or the printing means exoept when the next to the last mentioned means is unlocked.
