STOP DEVICE FOR STALLS.
menace.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1913.
Application filed. March 14, 1912. Serial No. 683,762.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. FERRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvard, in the county of McI-Ienry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop Devices for Stalls, of which the following is a specificatic-n.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a stop-device for stalls, and is fully described and explained in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the end of a stall showing my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one end of the stop-device proper with the adjacent collar.
Referring to the drawings, 3 is a vertical member forming a part of the end of the stall.
The construction of the stall proper need not be described in detail as it is not material to the present invention and will appear sufficiently fully from the drawings. 4 is the stop device, the same being formed of metal bent into the form of a broad U, that is to say, with a vertical intermediate portion and two relatively-short horizontal ends. The ends terminate in bosses 5 which surround the vertical member 3. Immediately below the bosses 5 upon the vertical member 3 of the stall are collars 6 which can be adjusted vertically through the medium of set screws 7. Each boss has a teat S and each collar a notch 9 adapted to be fitted thereby when the stop device is in the position shown in Fig. 1. By this engagement the stop device is held firmly in that position when so placed, but, by being raised sufliciently for the teats to clear the notches in the collar, the stop device can be swung about the vertical member 3 so as to open the space between the vertical member 3 and the stanchion when a clear aperture is desired for any purpose.
Stop devices are of course well known and their purpose is to form an obstruction be tween the relatively-stationary side of the stanchion and the adjacent side of the stall, so that when the stanchion is open there will be only one place through which the animal entering the stall may place its head. As soon as the animal is in position and the stanchion closed, it oftentimes is desirable to open the space obstructed by the stop device and no provision for such opening has heretofore been made.
I am aware that considerable variation is possible in the details of the present construction without departing from the spirit of my invention and, by describing the same in detail in its preferred form, I do not intend it to be limited thereto, except as pointed out in the following claim in which my intention is to set forth all the novelty inherent in the construction as broadly as is permitted by the state of the art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination, a stallframe member,
notched collars on said stall frame-member,
and a stop member extending within said stall-frame member and having its ends formed with hollow bosses adapted to surround said stall frame-member, and projections on said bosses adapted to seat in the notches in said collars.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of March, 1912.
HENRY L. FERRIS. In the presence of D. L. \VATTs, LEE J. ANDREW.
