Description

A. E. KYLLONEN HAT PIN POINT PROTECTOR. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5, 1912..

WITNESSES INVENTOR COLUMBIA PLANDGRAEH COq'I\SHlNCTON. I. r.
FTCE,
ANDREW E. KYLLONEN, 0F MONESSEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
LOG 348.
To all whom it may, concern.
Be it known that 1, ANDREW E. KYL- LUNEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Monessen, in the county of \Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HatPin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hat pin point protecting device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device that will serve a two fold purpose, namely, that of locking a. hat pin relatively to a hat whereby it cannot become accidentally displaced, and that of serving as a protector to prevent pedestrians and other persons from being injured by contacting with the pointed end of a hat pin.
The above is attained by a mechanical construction that affords a sure and ready means of protecting the pointed end of a hat pin, the device having a novel clamping member which permits of the device being easily and quickly placed upon the pointed end of the pin.
The invent-ion will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the device applied to a hat pin. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the device, and Fig. is a plan of a blank or piece of metal from which the body of the device is formed.
A device in accordance with this invention includes a housing made from a blank piece of metal that has the lower edges thereof scalloped to provide prongs :2 and the upper edge of the blank has a central tongue 8 provided with a small opening 4. The blank is bent upon the dot and dash lines 5 to form front and rear walls 6 that have the upper ends thereof provided with alining openings 7. The bending of the blank upon the dot and dash line 5 provides a side wall 1 and an open side closed by a clamping member to be presently referred Specification of Letters Patent.

to. The tongue 3 is bent upon the dot and dash lines 3)" to form one end of the housing. The prongs 2 are bent inwardly to form an end closure, as best shown in Fig. 2, and the shape of the blank provides a housing in which can be inserted the pointed end of a pin 8, the pin passing through the opening at of the tongue 3.
Trunnioned in the openings 7 are the oppositely disposed lugs 9 of a clamping member 10, said member having the end thereof bent and provided with prongs 11 for engaging the hat pin 8. The clamping member 10 operates upon the principle of a cam and when said member is closed, as best shown in Fig. 2, the pronged end of the clamping member binds the hat pin against the wall of the opening t and prevents the device from becoming accidentally displaced relatively to the pin. The point of the pin is housed and a person contacting with the device is not injured by the pin.
Since the device is made entirely of metal, it is susceptible to any desired ornamentation whereby it will present a neat and attractive appearance in connection with a hat pin.
hat I claim is In a hat pin point protecting device a. housing formed of a single piece of material bent to provide front and rear walls, one side wall and an open side, inwardly projecting prongs at the end of said walls bent together to form an end closure for said housing, an apertured tongue at the opposite end of said housing bent to provide an end wall for the housing and positioned between the front and rear walls, said apertured tongue adapted to receive a hat pin therethrough, and a clamping member trunnioned between said front and rear walls and having a pronged end to engage the hat pin within the housin said member acting as a cam to bind the hat pin in said apertured tongue.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
