- hielo and etlicient in operation.
fr further object ot the invention to provide an apparatus of the character' if lrred to wherein coal or other l'uel may he employed thereby sccorii j economy, and wherein a heat-ing stove 'is oecd with a :toreed draft and .'orced heat distribution to e the ear or vehicle to he heated therefrom,
il ti and wherein the heater and associated parte and apparatus are so located as to he fr 'Wholly removed from availahie passenger space .in the hody of the car or vehicle, while the heat flistrihution is effected from a point adjacent the door level ot' the ear or vehicle, thereby not only securing a efficient heating ol" the car or vehicle hut also a desirable artii'al 'ventilation oli the Same.
e 'fully hereinafter. r
e .invention consists Substantially in the conctraction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parte, all as will he :more ,lully hereinafter Set forth, and `Partien pointed out in the appendedclaims. e i ng; to the accompanying drawtoog-Figure l `is a view in transverse section oi a portion off a street car, showing the application thereto of a heating appatns embodying `the m'inciples of my in tion. Fig. 2 is a cetail view in eleva-- i ci the heater showing a slight modihcation of thc manner of distributing the heat therefrom into the car. Fig. 3 is a .detail view in elevation oit the heater, the door of the inclosing casing being removed, and showing a slight modification of the arrangement of dratt connection from the heater.
Referring to the drawings, in carrying out my invention, in one form of embodiment thereof, l provide an airtight casing 5,
:rer objects; of the invention will appear which may be constructed in any Suitable 'forni and of any suitable material. l have found that Sheet asbestos hnnher is cllicient for .my purposes as it is light, durable' and. fire-proof. 'It desired, the chamber 2T of the casing; 5 may he lined with galvanized Sheet iron This casing l propose to locate and conveniently Support beneath the door oit the ear, as clearly chown, and to place thereu in the stove 7. This stove may he of any suitable construction and forni, for coal. or other :Enel consumption. In the form shown the upper part oit the stove constitutes the lire ehanlher and the lower part the ash pit.
A pipe connection 8, nflelivcre into the cha1nher Q7, of the casing, which surrounds the stove, preferably at a point adjacent the lower end of Saidv casing, :said pipo connection communicating` with the outer air, prelewthly through an air intake device 9, which is preferably protected by means ot a perforated screen l0. A, blower fan, indicated at 1l, in Fig. l4 is arranged in the pipe connection 8, and operates to deliver air into said chamber.
A draft may he maintained through the stove :in any suitable or convenient manner for the purpose oi? Supporting the combustion of the fuel therein. A simple and etective arrangement is shown wherein I provide a small opening l2, through the side of the Stove, preferably at a point beneath the lire chamber thereof", as; shown. From the top of the stove extends the draft pipe 13, which is arranged in any desired* manner within the chamber QT ol casing 5, and cxtends rtlownwardly therein and out through the wall thereof at any convenient point to del iver to the outer air.
,ln the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 'il the down draft pipe is arranged in a spiral coil around the stove as indicated at 14.
The heat distribution from the heater to the interior of the car may he accomplished in many different Ways. A simple arrange ment is shown wherein a distributing pipe connection 15, which communicates with the chamber 27, of casing 5, is arranged to oxtend. upwardly `through vthe loor 1G, of the .ear or vehicle, to deliver into the interior of the car, or vehicle, at a point adjacenithe level of lil-oor '1.6, as shown in Fig. l. It desired, the-heated air may be delivered into the body of the car at various points by iet means of distributing pipe connections 17, Which are arranged to communicate with the pipe connection 15, or, in any other manner, With the chamber 27;
In order that the heating apparatus may v 'seat 18, of the car, and, if desired, through va suitable register vIf desired, and in order to direct the heated air into the car body through the register 20 and in a direction transversely of the car, a deilector plate 21 may be employed at the point of delivery of the heat distributing pipe connections into the car, said plate being suitably curved or bent, as shown to accomplish the desired result. p p l In order'to gain access to the interior of the chamber 27, for the purpose of inserting or removing the stove, or ofxattending to the fire or t'o supply fuel or remove ashes, the casing 5 may be provided withI a removable side 22, Which, in therdrawing, is shown as a hingedsside door. Inorder to afford means for inspecting the tire without opening the door 22, the casing 5, may be provided With a panel 23, of isinglass or other suitable transparent material, and a similar provided in the stove.
If desired,and in order to afford means for regulating and controlling the fire in theA stove, said stove may be provided With the usual damper slides 25, controllable by rods 26, Which extend to the exterior of the casing 5.
The operation of the apparatus is very simple and Will be readily understood.
With a fire in thestove 7, and the latter 'arran ed in chamber 27, and the chamber elosed,the blower 1l, delivers airinto said chamber 27, with a velocity sufficient to create a-desirae degree of pressure in said' This air 'circulating around the stove and., around the down-draft pipe connection 18, thereby becomes heatedand is delivered through the distributing pipe connections 15, 17, into the body ofthe car and at any desi-red point, or points, preferably adjacent the floor level thereof. 'lhe small i opening 12 in the stove affords means for a draft to be maintained through lthe stove, The heated products of combustion pass fromthe stove through the down draft pipe connection 13, and are nally delivered thereby to the outer air, said draft pipe passing, as above explained, through the casing 5. The Aair circulating in the chamberk panel 24, may be- 27, and around the down draft pipe, enables me thereby to extractv the heat from the gases lor other-products of combustion passingl from the stove, and to utilize the same for heat distributioninto the interior ofthe car, and consequently Iam enabled to attain great efficiency in fuel economy. The heated air distributed at one or more points into the car body and adjacent the iioor level thereof not only heats the car most efciently throughout Wide tareas,l but the heated air rising Within thecar effects a desirable artiiicial .ventilation of the car. In these respects Va heating apparatus embodying my invention embodies very great practical advantages over the usual method of car heating fromstoves Where only the space immediately adjacent the stove is heated, and only by. radiation and not vfrom a hot air draft, and besides, this system of heating a'ords no material degree of ventilation of the car. By locating the heating apparatus beneath the floor of the car itl does not take up any passenger space on the inside ofthe car, and by. employing a downdraft pipe connection I avoid the necessity of running a stove pipe up through -the ear body'and roof which Would take up. passenger space.
An apparatus embodying my invention enables me to employ coal or other fuel stoves iny place of electric heaters, and to secure the greatest degree of economy of fuel consumption,v While affording ample means for regulating the heat supply, and consequently securing great -economy in the car heating system. B y arranging the down draf-t pipe connection 1n a coil Within chamv ing my invention, it is obvious that many changes and modifications in the details thereof, Willreadily occur to persons skilled in the art, without departure from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the claims, But
'Having now set forth thel objects and nature of my invention, and -a construction embodying the principles thereof, What I claim as newv and useful, and of my own invention, and desirefto secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1.
