RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atentedJune 1t), 1913.
Application filed May 25, 1912. Serial No. 699,756.
Be it known that l, (ius'mvo A. Quiros, a eitizen ot' the lepublie olf (nba, residing at h'aneti Spiritus, in the lrovinee olf Santa Clara and llepublie ol. Cuba, have invented new and usetul Improvements in Rules, ot whieh the :followingv is a s|nieitieation.
rlhe general object ot this invention is the `ljirovision ol a rule partieularly adapted ltor use in rulingl musie staves, but it is also designed to be used by boohkeepers` aeeonntants and the like7 novel means beingi` provided whereby a number ot pa 'allel linesl .may be drawn at even and predetermined distances apart.
In earnying ont the objeets o'tt the inven tion generally stated above7 it will be understood7 o'l' course, that the essential llieatures thereof are suseeptible to ehang'es in details and structural arrangements, one preterrta'l and praetieal embodiment being' shown in. the :u'eolnpanying' (lrawint-L` wherein Figure l is a top plan view ot the rule eonstrueted in aeeordanee with the invention. Fie'. Q is a bottom plan view thereol. Fie'. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. -lv is a transverse seetion on the line *lA- mt ot Fir'. V1.
.Referringl more partieularly to the aeeompanying drawing in whieh like rel'erenee eharaeters (flesigrnate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention eomprises z body 5 havingY a flat bottom surlaee and i eonvex upper' surt'aee said upper surtaee being' provided with the usual e'raduations t5. The bottom otz the body 5 is provided tor a major portion oit its length with a longitudinally extending' reeess 7 having' the end hearingsI S and intermwliate bearing;` t.) extending' transversely thereot. A sha tft 1t) is rotatably mounted in the said bearings and has seeured thereon a pair ot rollers 11 whieh have their inner end spaeed by means ot the bearing 9. 'lhe rubber bands 12 are Iixed upon the rollers 1l and extendingr lon- Lnitutlinally thereoit` said bands being;l adapted to 'trietionally engage a paper to be ruled7 thereby preventing; any movement. ot the rule when being' used. 'Intermediate the outer ends of the rollers il and the end baring's S, the shalit has fixed thereon the ratehet wheels 123 and 141-, the latter having' its teeth spaced a greater distanee apart than the former 'for a purpose whieh Vwill be presently described. The upper surlaee ol the body 5 has secured thereto at each end thereot a spi-iner pawl 15 whieh extends transversely ot the said body and is provided at its 'lree end with an extension lt whieh is adapted to projeet through an opening' IT `lormed in said body and nor lnally engage the adjaeent ratehet wheel. A eranh handle lb is rotatably mounted in eaeh eml ol' the body 5, the inner end ot said handle beine' provided with an extension l5) whieh is adapted to engage the under sur- 'l'aee ol the adjaeent pawl t5 whereby the latter may be raised out ot' engagement with the ratehet wheel when the latter is not .in Ilse. lt is to be understood that only one ot the ratehet wheels are in use at a time and by reason ol: the 'taet that the same are pros vided with teeth whieh are spaeed tlitlerent distanees apart', it will be readily seen that the lilies to be drawn are eorres])ondingly spaeed. Should it be desired to draw n number ol' lines having` the minimum spaee therebetween` the handle '18 :nljaeent the ratehet wheel lvlv is rotated thus 'ausingr the paw] l5 to dis-engage theretronl. then in this position the other pawl Vl5 will be in engagement' with the ratehet wheel l?) and at'ter eaeh line is drawn andthe rule moved, said pawl will engage the sueeetaling' noteh in the said ratehet wheel` thus preventing the rotation oll the shatt l() until turther pressure is brought to l \ar against the rule. When it is desired to draw lines a greater distane-` apart` the position ot the handle 1S is reversed and the rule operated in the manner `inst deseribed.
From the foregoing i'leseription taken in eonneetion with th\ aeeonipanying drawing, it will he seen that the invention eontemplates providing a rule whieh is eomparatively simple in eonstruetion thus retlueingr the eost ol mauu't'aeture o'tf the same to a minimum, and whieh is durable and ell'eetive in earrying' out the purpose lor whieh it is designed.
'hat is elaimed istl. A rule eomprising' a body, spared rollers mounted in said body, a ratellet' wheel mounted adjaeent the outer end o'l eaeh ot' said rollers, pawls earried by said body and adapted to engage said ratehet wheels. and means rotatably mounted in eaeh end of said body lor moving the adjaeent pawl out of einran'ement with its r: tehet wheel.
rule eoniprisingl a body having' a longitudinal reress in one surtaee thereof,
for moving the adjacent paWl out of engagement with its ratchet Wheel.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
