Description

CHARLES GAYLCR-D, CF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT COLUMBIA.
Letters Patent N o. 106,351, dated August 16, 1870.
. IMPROVEMENT IN KING-EB.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and lmaking part of the-same Figure 1 is a perspective front view of luy-improved hinge, partially opened;
Figure 2 is a perspective rear.. view of the same; and p Figure 3 is a sectional view, showing my improved method of fastening-the hinge to a blindo r casiu g.
Similar let-ters indicate like parts in all the figures.
My invention is particularly applicable to hinges employed on window-blinds,'though it may be used elsewhere; and
It consists in the employment of a projection or lng onthat leaf of the hinge attached to the casing, which lug moves in a` recess or groove of peculiar formation inthe opposite leaf of the hinge, by means which, when the blind is entirely or partially opened or closed, it will be securely fastened in position, thus obviating the employment ofthe ordinary windowastenings'.
My invention further consists inl the employment, in lieu of screw fastenngs as ordinarily used, ot' two pieces orsemi-disks,'having flaring sides and openings in their centers, which are let int-o countersunk holes or openings in the hinge,`aud also into the casing or wood-work to which they are applied, in conjunction with a screw or wedge which passes through the opening at the centers of the semi-disks, forcing them apart, and thus securely attaching thehinge.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents that leaf of the hinge which is attached to the casing, in the manner hereinafter fully set forth.
This leaf is provided with a projection, D, on the upper end of which is ashort pintle, e, which works in the socket or eye E, attached to the leaf B.' a isa lug or projection on the leaf A, which works, as the blind is opened or closed, in apecnliarly-tormed recess or groove formed yon the surface o f the socket or eyeE, which groove is constructed as follows:
The part m, of the groove or recess` (see tig. 2,) is made vertical', `and extends to the lower extremity ot' the socket or eye E, to allow the freepassage ofl the lug c, when the blind is opened and it is designed to raise it, for removal or unlocking the fasteninv. vAt the upper extremity of that portion ofthe groove lettered m, (see-fig. 2,) there is a. recess formed between the projecting portion n and the outer line ot" that portion of the groovelettered m, into which the pros jection or lug a is forced by the weight of the blind, when the latte-1' is entirely opened, whereby it is securely locked when in that position.
o, tig. 1, is a recess -in the projecting.. part In, which in a similar manner 'locks the blind when partially opened, and a recess, x, (see tig. 1,) vis formed in the opposite side ofthe groove, into which the lng enters, by reason of the weight of the blind, when the latter is closed, thus `securely locking it when in ,that position.
To unlock the blind when in'any of the above-described positions, it is only' necessary to' raise it slightly, ,before turning it, to disengage the lug a.
C C are countersnnk openings in the leaves A B, and dd' are 'two-pieces or seuil-disks, made flaring on their exterior surfaces, or, when placedtogether, forming the'frustum of n. cone. An opening is made in the wood corresponding with the form of the two v semi-disks when placed together.'
Projecting pieces a.' c', o f less'dialnetcr than the semi-disks, are formedlon their upper ends, and are made to enter, and are attached to, the ccuntersnnk openings C C in the hinge.
The parts d d being inserted into corresponding holes or openings made in' the casing or wood, and the pieces a' a/being inserted' into the openings C C, -a screw, S, or wedge, is inserted in'the opening at the center cf the semi-disks, and, being forced therein, spreads apart the semi-disks, and forms asecnre fastening.
rThis method of'fastening is much more secure thanv the ordinary screw-fastening, land it may, obviously, be used elsewhere than in hinges in attaching parts together; and I- do in i, therefore, mean to confine this feature of mjy-.invention to the employment of said fastening only ou hinges.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Z'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letrers Patent, is-
1j. The leaf A, provided with the. projection a on said leaf, in combinationv with the leaf B, having a horizontal groove, with perpendicular notches, on the exterior surface of its socket E, substantially as set fort-h.
2. The fastening, consisting ofthe plate' B, in -coiubination with the flaring pieces or semi-disks d d and screw or wedge, substantially as described.
CHARLES GAYLORD.
