Description

W. HARPER, JR.
Patented June 3. 51913y INTERNAL GOMBUSTION ENGNE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2o, 1906. REHEWED 00T. so, 1912.
A. indd! a Erwan-ul n I!!! with this stroke. (ln the return stroke this y charge compressed, and concurrently i charge chamber. llt the conclusion of this stroke the ports between the compressionchambers are uncovered and the compressetl chai in the auxiliary conupression-chamber is transferred and added to the charge. in the main conipression-chan'iber. On the next stroke with the descent ot' the reciproeat-ing part the combined charge from the two compre..sion-chambers is compressed in the main compression-chamber. At the conclusion ot this stroke the passageway l vthrough the reciprocating part is brought into register with the passageway zu in the *wall of the smaller cylinder and the compressed charge is trimszt'erred to the powerchainber. ln passing into thc power-chainber the incoming (.l'iarge first deflected to the top of the chamber on the side opposite' the exhaust port so that itwill be kept stratified from the exploded charge and displace and expel or scavenge the latter through.' the exhaust port. The exhaust port is properly adjusted in size or throttled so that this scavenging o t the powerchamber `will require about the length of time that the ports of the chamber remain open. On the next return stroke the charge is further compressed in the power-chamber and when compressed is ignited for the next downward stroke which is the power stroke for the combined charge above traced from the induction ot its'coin'ponent parts.
It will be seen that there are six opera tions each occupying a stroke in oneor the other of the three chambers, namely: induction in the annular compressiori-chainber, compression in the annular compression-chamber, induction in the main couipressiori-chamber, compression 1n the main compression-chaiuber, compression in the poraar-chamber, and czqilosion and expansion in the power-chainber. 'l'lut as one or the other takes place in each of the three 1 l l l l l l l drawn into the main compressionconsisting' ot connected piston heads operati y l l i l l i l i i I l i l l l l l l l l l l chambers at each stroke, it follows that all otthe operations are taken, though not for the same explosive charge, in each two strokes or each revolution of the engine, and hence the engine may be termed a twoeycle engine,.or an engine in which Ithe operations vrecur at each two strokes, although each charge requires five strokes for its complete transit through the several chainhers ot the engine.
YVhat l claim as new and desire to secur by Letters Patent of the Tnited States is:
1. An internal-conibustion engine comprising tandem connnunicating cylinders ot di'tlercnt diameters, a reciprocating part ing in the cylinders and farming a powerchamber in the smaller cylinder, a compression-chamber in the outer end or" the larger cylinder, and an annular compression-chaniber .between the walls of the reciprocating part and the walls of the larger cylinder, inlet ports for hoth co1upression-chambers, means for closing both of the inlet ports, a suitably controlled communicating port between the compression-chambers, a. suitably controlled communicating port between the compressioli-chamber ofthe outer end of the larger cylinder and the power-chamber,
andan exhaust port for the power-chamber,'
substantially as described. A
An internal-coinhustion engine contprising tandem communicating cylinders ot dill'erent diameters, a reciprocating part consisting ot' rigidly connected piston heads operating in the cylinders and forming a power-chamber in the smaller cylinder, a compressiin-chamber in the outer end ot' the larger cylinder, and an annular coinpression-chamber between the walls of the reciprocating part and the, walls of the larger cylinder, inlet ports for both conipression-chambers, means for closing both of the inlet ports, a suitably controlled conimunicating port between the'compressionchambers, a suitably controlled communicating port between the conipression-chainber of the outer end oft the larger cylinder and the power-Chamb r which includes a port through the reciprocating part, and an exhaust port for the power-chamber, suhstantially 'as described.
