Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HUDSON, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Birnam Lodge, Airdrie, in the county of Lanark, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in or relating to steam boilers and is a further improvement or development of that contained in my prior British patent specification-No. 6991 of 1907.
The invention has for its object to combine water tubes with cylindrical boilers in a particular manner so as to obtain a greater area of heating surface and consequently quicker evaporation, whereby a saving of fuel is effected and a better circulation of water obtained, and owing to the quicker evaporation a saving of space is effected as a smaller boiler may be used for a given power.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing a cylindrical boiler fitted with water tubes, headers and drums in accordance with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the front of the boiler, partly in section. Fig. 4 is an end view of the back of the boiler, also partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, I apply at each side of the cylindrical (Cornish or Lancashire) boiler, water tubes A placed within the side flues a formed in the setting of the'boiler. The tubes are preferably arranged at an angle within the side flues a that is to say they are inclined upwardly from the front of the boiler to the back thereof; the said tubes at each end being provided with a water tight box or drum B and B preferably ofa circular shape, the
Y 1 back of the boxes forming a tube plate through which the ends of the tubes are inserted and the fronts b and b of the boxes being made removable for the purpose of cleaning or renewing the tubes. The said boxes or drums are in communication with the cylindrical Cornish or Lanoashire boiler C at the front and at the rear thereof. At
the front, the connections consist of a horizontal mud drum C placed in front of the boiler setting and connected to each of the tube boxes and to the boiler shell by means of inclined pipes or connections, the said mud drum also having the usual blow-off pipe 0 and cock; or if desired, the said drum may be placed underneath the boiler and connected thereto by a vertical pipe 0 and to the tube boxes B by the pipes 0 and c as shown in the drawings.
With regard to the arrangement of the connections between the cylindrical boiler G and the rear tube boxes B the connection consists of a branch pipe D connecting the tube boxes together and having a T connection (Z coupled to the cylindrical boiler below the water level. I also connect the top of the back tube boxes to the steam space of the cylindrical boiler by means of a pair of l inclined pipes E and E coupled to connections 6 and c on the top of the cylindrical boiler near the rear end thereof.
In lieu of the above arrangement, I may connect the back tube boxes together by means of a water drum and on the underside of the said druinand at the center thero-f, I provide a right angle pipe connected to the water space of the cylindrical boiler and on the top of the drum I provide a steam pipe or connection coupled to the steam space of the boiler. These connections serve to equalize the pressure between the cylindrical boiler and the tube boxes and also to promote a good circulation of the water thereby maintaining all the parts of the boiler at a fairly uniform temperature, thus avoiding undue straining of the boiler. The arrangement of the connections between the cylindrical boiler and the buck tube boxes may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the essential features of my invention.
The side flues for the water tubes are in communication with. the furnace tube or tubes at the rear of the boiler; and at the front of the boiler the said side flues are in communication with the bottom flue of the boiler setting, which flue leads to the stack.
The Water in the water tubes and tube boxes finds a very free circulation in passing down the pipe 0 at the front of the cylindrical boiler through the mud drum G and thence into the front tube boxes B from which it circulates along the tubes A, thence passing into the back tube boxes B and through the connecting pipes D and d or drum int-o the cylindrical boiler at the back end thereof.
The flame and products of combustion from the furnace of the cylindrical boiler the front of the boiler and thence down the fiues connection with the bottom flue leading to the stack any heat remaining in the products of combustion being absorbed by the underside of the cylindrical boiler before the gases finally pass out into the stack.
Claims.
1. In steam boilers, the improved arrange ment and construction of the inclined water tubes A with the circular boxes 13 and B placed in the side flues; the front mud drums C and connections 0, c and 0 the connections D and (Z on the rear tube boxes together with the steam pipes E and E in combination with the cylindrical boiler as set forth.
2. In steam boilers, the combination with the usual cylindrical boiler, of two sets of inclined water-tubes arranged in the usual side fiues, headers on the front and rear ends of such sets of tubes, a horizontal mud drum located at the front of the boiler, pipe connections between the front headers and the mud drum, a pipe connecting the mud drum with the boiler, connecting means between the rear headers, a pipe connection from such means to the water space of the boiler, and steam pipes connecting the rear headers with the steam space in the boiler.
3. In steam boilers, the combination with the usual cylindrical boiler, of two sets of inclined water tubes arranged in the usual side flues, circular headers on the front and rear ends of such sets of tubes, a horizontal mud drum located beneath the front of the boiler, vertical pipes between the front headers and the mud drum with the boiler, a pipe connecting the rear headers, a pipe connecting the last mentioned pipe with the water space in the boiler, and a pair of steam pipes connecting the rear headers with the steam space in the boiler near the rear end thereof.
