APPARATUS FOR COATING CONFE C TIONERY.
Specification of Lettersratent.
- Patented May 27, 1913.
Application filed April 10, 1911. Serial No. 620,130. I
To all whom it may concern Be itlmown that I, JOHN VVJLFRID HAY- THQRNTHWAITE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 125 Chapel House road, Nelson, in the county of Lancaster, England, manager of gum factory, have invented a new or Improved Apparatus for Coating Confectionery, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means and apparatus for crystallizing or coating jellies, gums, pastils fondants and the like with sugar, with the object of dispensing with hand labor as ordinarily required.
In the accompanying drawing to which I hereinafter referyFigur 1 is a side view, Fig. 2 aplan, and Fig. 3 an end view ofapparatus for the purpose hereinbefore named constructed according to .this invention; Fig. 4 is a side view and Fig. 5 an end View of steam chest and conveyer employed in combination with the aforesaid apparatus.
In these views the same letters refer to like parts.
According to this invention and for the purpose'hereinbefore named, I connect to the delivery end of an ordinary starch cleanin machine which is raised to a convenient height from the floor, a spreader b that is formed of a corrugated perforated plate, the corrugations diverging outward toward each side; said spreader has an oscillating and vibrating motion imparted to it by being connected to the discharge tube a of the starch cleaning machine that is oscillated and vibrated in the ordinary manner by means of a cam or an eccentric, thereby causing the goods that are delivered on to the spreader from the cleaning machine to be spread on to the fiat surface of a constantly erforated belt 0, which is carried over rollers g and g placed respectively at each end of the "machine, the outer end of the spreader b resting on a transverse roller I) placed a little above the belt 0." said perforated belt 0 passes through a steam chest d in which steam jets-c are arranged above andbelow the belt by which the goods are moistened.
After passing through the steam chest, the belt passes over the roller 9' at an acute angle, causing the goods to fall off the belt on to a shelf f and then on to a second shelf f which is in the form of a sieve, both shelves'haviug a lip f" on their edges and oscillated by a cam or an eccentric as f: a
constant supply of powdered sugar is deliver-ed on to the first shelf f from a hopper j, and as the goods fall thereon from the belt 0 the sugar adheres to-the moistened surfaces of the goods, which are caused by the oscillation of the shelf 7 to pass on to the second shelf or sieve f, through which the surplus sugar falls into a hopper 1", where it is dried by the heat from the coils e' in the chopper, said coils being heated by the exhaustand partiall condensed steam from the steam chest passing through them in said hopper, and the sugar is returned to the source of supply from whidh the hopper j is fed by a conveyer as k: the continuous oscillation of the shelves f and f causes the goods to be delivered to wire bottomed trays which are then placed on an endless traveling belt Z (Fig. 4;). that-is operated by an endless chain m, which conveys the trays through a steam chest ;0 in which partia ly dissolved and fixed to. the goods,
which are left to dry and are then ready for sale or export.
Motion is given to the belt 0 from the main drive 9 by said belt passing between the rollers 9 g, and it is cleaned on both sides by the brushes 0 ,0 fitted in reversed positions Having thus described my invention,
.what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.'The combination in a coating machine of a steam chest; a'conveyer passing through said chest; a movable shelf formin a container for coating material and placed to receive articlesfrom said conveyer; means for oscillating said container; means for separating the coated articles from the surplus coating material after they have passed from the container; and a device for partially dissolving the coating on the coated articles and thereby fixing it to the latter.
2. The combination in a coating machine of a steam-chest; a conveyer passing therethrough; means for delivering articles to be coated to said conveyer; means for delivering coating material to such articles after they have been passed through the steam-chest; a second steam-chest; and means for conveying the coated articles through the same.
3. The combination in a coating machine of two steam-chests; two conveyers .respectively passing through said steam-chests;
means for feeding articles to be coated to one of said conveyers; an oscillatory structure placed to receive articles to be coated from said latter conveyer and deliver articles to the second conveyer; means for delivering coating material to the articles ,While they are on said oscillatory. structure; and means for removing surplus material from the articles after they have been coated and before they are delivered to the second conveyer.
4. The combination in a coating machine of a conveyer; means for moistening articles while they are on said conveyer; an oscillatory structure placed to receive articles from the conveyer and constituting a container for coating material; means for supplying coating material to the articles while they are on said oscillatory structure; and a movablestructure for separating the surplus coating material from the articles after they have been coated.
5. The combination in a coating machine of a conveyer; means for supplying articles to be coated to said conveyer; means for moistening articles on the conveyer; an oscillatory container placed to receive articles from the conveyer and formed to hold coating material; means for supplying coating material to the articles in said container; a movable sieve placed to receive. ,articles from the container for separating surplus 'coating material therefrom; with means for moistening the articles after they have been coated.
6. The combination in a coat-ing machine ofa conveyer; means for supplying articles to be coated to said conveyer; means for moistening articles on the conveyer; an oscillatory container placed to receive articles from the conveyer; means for supplyin coating material to the articles in said container; a movable sieve placed to receive articles from the container for separating surplus coating material therefrom; a conveyer placed to receive articles from said sieve; and means for moistening the coated articles while theyare on said latter conveyer.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W-ILFRID HAYTHORNTHWAITE.
