Specication of Letters Patent.
PatendMay 27, 1913.
origini application mea september 1, 1911, serial No. 647,270. Divided and this application med member 27,1911. sum n. esame.
To 'all whom it may conce/rn.
Be it known that l, WILLIAM L., HARRIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddle and -Sta-te of Virginia, have inventedl certain new and useful Improvements in Peanut.- Planters, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion has relation to peanut planters, and has for its object to provide a nut selecting and dropping mechanism of peculiar arrangelnentdesigned to select individual nuts from a quantity carried in a hopper and convey` the same to a boot through which ythe nuts are dropped successively into a furrow opened in the soil.
The subject mat-ter of the present invention is divided from lny copending application for patent for peanut planter, filed September 1, 1911, Serial'No. 647 ,270.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional View of a hopper with the dropping mechanism applied, showing parts thereof in section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a shield used in the dropping mechanism; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the rim of a wheel used in the dropping mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a casting used in the dropping mechanism.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
The seed selecting and dropping mechanism includes a hopper 36 which may be positioned in any suitable manner upon aplanter frame indicated in general in the drawing but not shown' in detail. The hopper 36 is provided at its bottom and at its rear side with a slot 37. A wheel 38 1s journaled for rotation at the rear side of the hopper 36 and the forward portlon of the said wheel projects through the slot 37.
lThe wheel 38 is fixed upon a shaft 39 and any suitable means (not shown) may be provided for rotatingthe said shaft. The
wheel' 38 is provided at its periphery with a series of lugs 41 and each lug 41 is provided at each end with recesses 42 and 43. The recesses 42 are of greaterdiameter than the recesses 43 and the peripheral portions of the wheel 38' betweeri the `lugs 41 are approgumately V-shaped in transverse section, as at 44. The ridges of the portions 44 of the wheel are in alinement with the inner sides of the recesses 42and 43. Consequently the said'ridgnes are not in true arcs concentric with the center of the wheel but are eccentrcally positioned, for the reason that the recesses 42 and 43 are of different diameters. y u
A boot l45 is carried by the frame of the' planter and the wheel 38 is located directly above the upper end of the boot. A disk 46 1s Journaled at the lower portion of the boot 45. A shield 47 is provided with side portions which normally lie at the opposite sides of the upper forward portion of the wheel 38 and at the side edges of the slot 37 1n the hopper 36. This shield is adapted to prevent the nuts or seed from coming in contact with the spokes of the wheel 38. At
wits upper portion the shield47 is provided with a hood section 48 which extends around the upper rear portion 'of the wheel 38 and which Is hingedly connected at its rear end with a hood section 49 which in turn is rigidly supported upon the hopper 36. The discharge end of the hood section 48 is located above the receiving end of the boot 45.
A casting 50 is attached to the bottom of the hopper 36 at the forward end of the l slot 37. This casting is provided at its rear portion with a groove 51 which receives the lower forward lugs 41 upon the periphery of the wheel 38. The casting -50 is located between the bottom of the hopper 36 and the upper forward edge of the boot 45.
The operation of the device is as follows: The disk 46 makes an incision in the soil. At the same time the shaft 39 and the wheel 38 are set in motion so that the upper porlug 41 moves above or clears the upper portion of the casting 50 a nut may fall down into the groove 51 of the said casting and thus it is positioned so that it may readily enter the recess of the next succeeding lug are turned into inverted positions7 the seed passes from the lug b v which it is elevated to the preceding lug and is carried down and deposited in the hoot 45 without danger of bruising or crushing.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1.p\ seed selecting and dropping mechanism including a hopper having a slot formed in its bottoin'and side, a rotatably mounted seed wheel projecting into the hopper through the slot, ay boot positioned be-' neath the wheel, a hood section supported b v the hopper and extending about a portion of the wheel to maintain the seed in place, and u second hood section hinged by one end to the tirst and bearing about the upper portion of the seed wheel, said second hood section being provided at its free end with downwardly extending shields having angularly disposed edges adapted to seat against the bottom and side of the hopper when the shield is in lowered position to prevent the seed in the hopper from comingin Contact with the wheel spokes.
2. A seed select-ing and dropping mechanism including a ho-pper provided with a slot, a seed wheel rotatably mounted and eX- tending through the slot, and a guard for said seed wheel carried by the hopper, said guard including a lower section secured to the outer face of the hopper and a secondy section hinged to the upper end of the lower section and provided at its free end with downwardly extending -shields which bear against opposite sides of the wheel and which seat against the inner walls of the hopper to take the strain ofi' from the securing means of the first section.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
