BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ADAMS,
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,302, dated August 16, 12370,
To all persons to lwhom these presents may come: Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ADAMS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Burners for Lamps; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, making part thereof, of Which Figure 1 is a top View, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse and vertical sections, of one of my improved burners. Fig. 5 is a top view of the foraminous base part ofthe burner.
This burner is especially intended for a glass chimney having an oblong base, a side elevation of such chimney being exhibited in Fig. 6, an edge view in Fig. 7, and a bottom view in Fig. 8, vertical sections of it being represented in Figs. 3 and 4.
The chimney A has' its opposite sides c a parallel, is circular at top, is conical or formed tapering on its edges, and drawn in at its lower part, and there united to an oblong airdeflccting base, B, which, when the chimney is in use, surrounds the cone or inner air-deflector C, in manner as represented in Figs. 3 and 4. The said deilector C is provided with a foramimous lip or seat, b, for the lower edge of the base B to rest upon, such base being held to the lip by hooked projections c c and a spring-latch, d, all formed and arranged as represented. The cone or deiiector O is also provided or formed with an oblong recess or socket, e, to receive the upper portion, f, of the base part D of the burner. The said portion f is an oblong dish, having a foraminous bottom, g, and being united to the screw-box h by a hollow perforated conical or tapering connection, i. The wick-tube lc eX- tends up through the box h and the portion f and above the latter, in manner as shown, the wick-elevator with its operative shaft being represented at m. The portion or dish f forms a cup or vessel to catch the carbon which may fall from the wick, and it also serves as an oblong tenon to iit into the socket e, the two,
in consequence of their being oblong and arranged with the wick-tube and the inner airdeflector, in manner as shown, serving, when together, to bring the upper oriiice, b, of the deflector into its correct workin g position with the wick-tube.
The base part of the chimney being oblong', and made to extend around the portion f and rest on the lip b, will, with the lip, cause the chimney to assume its correct position with reference to the opening of the upper part of the deilector O.
A particular advantage of my construction of burner is that it admits of the ready removal of the chimney and cone or deflector from the wick-tube and its supporter, when occasion may require, for trimming the wick, or for other purposes.
The eXtra air-deiiector made upon the chimney causes the air for the outer surface of the flame t0 be thrown in such a manner upon it as not only to facilitate combustion, but to prevent the iame from flickering or wavering and smoking the inner surface of the chimney.
I do not claim an elongated-base lamp-chimney formed as represented in the United States Patents Nos. 36,078 and 40,228, nor as shown in the rejected application of Itequa, iiled February 27, 1868.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, viz:
1. Thechimney as made not only with thc Hat-sided oblong tapering base B and parallel sides a c, but with the oblong and tapering body and the circular top, all formed as described and represented.
2..Also, the air-defiector C, as made with the oblong socket e and foraminous chimneyrest b, in combination with the screw base or wick-tube supporter as made or provided with the oblong foraminous dished tenon f to enter the socket e, and to be held in connection therewith by means substantially as eXi plained. x
