' new seat JOSIAH O. WILGOX, OF LONDON, WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent No. 106,300, dated August 9, 1870; antedated August 5, 1870.
IMPROVED SHEARI NG AND PUNCHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH G. WILGOX, of the village of New London, in the county of Waupacca and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for Shearing and Punching Iron and Steel; 'Yand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the. letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my'inverition consists in the construction-and arrangement of a combined shears and punch, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,
" knife-blade, G, which forms one side of the shears.
On the side of the frame B is pivoted a bar, D, having at its front a similar knife-blade, E, forming the upper or movable part of the shears.
The rear end of the bar I) is pressed downward by means of a spring, G, thus separating the knives or jaws O E by raising the upper one E.
Under the rear end of the bar D, and between the frame'B and a small standard, H, is pivoted a camlever, I, by the use of which the rear end of the bar D is forced gradually upward, closing the jaws of the shears.
The lever I may be used either turned toward the front or the rear, whichever will be most convenient for the operator.
On the side of the bar D, a suitable distance in front of the pivot-point, is a hook-shaped projection, J, as shown in fig. 2, within which is' placed the upper end of the punch K, said end of the punch being provided with a shoulder or projection, for the hook J to catch on.
The punch K moves in guides L L, secured on the side of the fi-ame B, and is operated by the motion of the bar D.
\Vhen the cam-lever I is turned so as to operate on the bar D, the jaws of the shears close, and the punch is forced downward, and as soon as the ,cam is turned away from said bar, the spring G presses its rear end downward, opening the shears and raising the punch.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letrers Patent, is-
The arrangement, herein described, of the pivoted bar or jaw l), cam-lever I, spring G, shear-blades O and E, punch K, hook-shaped projection J, and guides L L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I a'fiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH O. WIILOOX.
Witnesses:
