IMPLEMENT FOR PUNCHING AND CUTTING BELTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 28, 1909.
Patented May 27, 1913. Serial No. 492,685.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVHITFORD IV. 00a LEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Elizabeth City, county of Pasquotank, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Punching and Cutting Belts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus; and, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention has reference to that type of implement covered by my former Patents 757 ,589, 763,137 and 782,307, in which means are provided for squaring, punching and lacing the ends of machinery belting, and the object of the present invention is to improve and simplify this type of apparatus by providing means whereby at the same time the ends of the belt are punched they will be cut off square at an accurately predetermined distance from the line of punch holes, the construction being such that the belt may be cut and punched at any point along its length, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, a designates the table portion of the frame, 5 the depending end walls, and 0 the depending front walls in which a horizontal slot d is formed for the passage of the belt when it is placed for cutting and punch- 1n %)n the face of the front plate is slidably mounted a bed-plate c, this plate being vertically guided and held to the face of the face-plate by means of overhanging guide flanges f formed at the side edges of the face plate integrally therewith. This bedplate is worked up and down by means of an eccentric g mounted in a circular hole in the bed-plate and journaled on a stud 71 passing through the face-plate, the faceplate being thickened at its back, at 2', to afford a support for the stud. The eccentric is provided with a handle or lever 7' by which it may be rotated in raising and lowering the bed-plate.
A vertical rod Z2 is screwed into the upper face of the bed-plate at each end thereof, and the upper ends of these rods are rigidly connected by a bar Z, the rods passing through lugs at the ends of the bar and being clamped thereto by nuts clamped on the rods, these nuts permitting the bar to be vertically adjusted upon the rods. Fastened rigidly to the face of the face-plate, by screws 0%, is a bar a, this bar being lo cated between the bar Z and the bed-plate and being provided with vertical holes for the passage of rods in. Clamped between the bar 72 and the face of the face-plate a knife 0 whose edge depends to a point about on a level with the row of punches 7) depending from the stationary bar a.
Depending from the movable bar Z is a series of rods 9 which work down through holes in bar a and terminate about on a level with the cutting edge of the knife and which lie between'the knife and the punches. Fastened to the face of the bed-plate by a thumb-nut r is a horizontal slot-ted plate 8 whose upper edge is flush with the upper edge of the bed-plate and which carries at its left-hand end a forwardly projecting rigid angular guide-plate t.
The belt to be cut and punched is passed through the opening d in the face-plate to the point desired, the belt being guided and squared by means of the guide If. The lever 7' is then swung up parallel with the horizontal edges of the bed-plate, which will force the punches and the knife through the belt. The raising of the bed-plate lifts the bar Z and thus raises the stripper rods 9 out of the way. After cutting and punching, the bed-plate is forced downwardly and simultaneously therewith the stripper rods (7 push the belt down ofi the punches. It will be observed that the belt may be cut off at any point in its length and that no matter where it is cut the distance from the cut end to the punch line will always be the same. It will also be observed that the belt will be cut off exactly square so that the abutting ends of the belt will fit accurately together. If desired, the upper edge of the slotted plate .9 may be graduated with reference to a point on the adjacent edge of the bed-plate so that the edge guide 25 may be adjusted easily and accurately for belts of various widths.
I claim:
1. In an implement of the class described, the combination of an upright supporting 'table provided with a belt opening, means for guiding the belt through said opening, and means for simultaneously punchlng and cutting the belt, said means including a vert-ically movable platen and a stationary knife and a series of stationary punches, said punches being supported by a horizontal bar, and stripping means consisting of a bar supported above the punch bar and attached to the vertically movable platen and provided with a series of depending tripping pins.
2. In an implement of the class described, the combination of an upright plate provided with a belt opening and means for guiding the belt therethrough, a vertically movable platen supporting said guiding means, means for forcing this platen up and down, and cutting, punching and stripping means.
3. In an implement of the class described, the combination of an upright plate provided with a belt opening and means for guiding the belt therethrough, a vertically movable platen supporting said guiding means, means for forcing this platen up and down, cutting and punching means and the combination with an upright support, cutting and punching means supported thereon, a platen and means for moving it up and down with respect to the cutting and punching means, and stripping means carried by the platen.
6. In an implement of the class described, the combination of an upright support, provided with a belt opening, cutting and punching means embodying a vertically movable platen and belt guiding means supported thereon, said guiding means consisting of a horizontally flanged bar projecting forwardly from the face of the platen.
7 In an implement of the class described, the combination of an upright support, provided with a belt opening, cutting and punching means embodying a vertically movable platen and belt guiding means supported thereon, said guiding means consisting of a horizontally flanged bar projecting forwardly from the face of the platen, and means whereby said flanged bar may be adjusted laterally with respect to the belt opening in the supporting plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 27 day of April 1909.
