To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD SOUTH- \VORTH and EUGENE A. SPAULDING, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching- Hachines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a multiple punching machine such as is used for punching a plurality of holes in sheets of paper but it is also capable of being used for metal punching or other like machines where a plurallty of punches are used.
The class of machines to which our invention-particularly relates is that in which a plurality of self contained punching members are held in guides which permit them to slide laterally on the bed of the machine so that the holes to be punched along the edge of the sheet may be located in any desired place.
The object of our invention is to build a machine of this class in which the punches may be quickly inserted and firmly held in place and wherein the adjustments may all be made from the front of the machine and with as little loss of time as possible.

In the drawing, a represents the pedestal on which is mounted the bed of the machine a, with brackets (i supporting a suitable table a and at each end is a standard a in the upper portion of which is journaled the shaft a Resting on the bed piece in such a position that the paper may be pushed under the punches from the front are the punch members of which more or less are used according to the work to bedone. Each of thesepunch members is composed of a block Ghaving two forward extending arms 0 and 0 one above the other with the arm 0 uppermost. In the arm 0 is the stripper1c and sliding vertically in the arm 0 isthe punch holder a carrying the punch c. On
the upper end of the punch holder is a suitably formed head a which is adapted to engage the lower horizontal edge of the vertically movable slide it. The punch member is held and guided in such a way as to permit its sliding laterally across the bed of the machine and of being clamped in any desired position.
As herein shown, the upper side of the arm 0 is provided near its front or outer end with an upward opening slot which engages with a horizontal flange 6 formed on the lower edge of a holding panel 6 secured to the two uprights in front of the slide 72.. A suitable clamping screw 0 secures the block G in place on the flange 6 and the rear end of the block is held down by the horizontal lower edge of the holding plate d. Thus the punch member may be pushed in from the side of the machine the slot catching on the flange Z) and engaging therewith and the rear end being held solidly down on the bed by the plate d as shown. The blocks are pushed in in any member desired and are clamped at suitable intervals by the clamping screws 0 Gage members are provided which are similar in form to the punch members and secured in place the same way, their function being to gage the position of the rear or inner edge of the paper. For this purpose I provide the gage member J which consists of a block having an upright extension j at or near its front with a slot 3' in its upper surface, this slot engaging the lower edge Z) of the holding panel Z). A suitable clamping screw j is provided to clamp the block to the flange 6.
The lower portion of the block is made hollow and is provided with a recess which extends from the front face rearward, the lower portion of the recess being on a level with the table, whereby the paper may be allowed to enter from the front. per portion of the recess is journaled a screw 7" with a milled head projecting from the front of the block. The screw 3" is prevented from moving longitudinally by a flat headed screw j the head of which engages an annular groove 7' (Fig. 6) in the screw 7'. Means operated by the screw j are provided for gaging the position of therear edge of the paper. As here shown, we provide nut j on the screw j and attached to the nut is a gage plate j adapted tie-slidein a shallow groove in the bed of the blookJ.
In the up' Means operated from the front of the block are provided for clamping the screw in position. For this purpose we bore a hole j at right angle to the screw and in this hole a pin j is inserted, one end of the pin impinging on the screw and the other end having a conical point against which impinges the conical point of a clamping screw jhaving a head in front of the block at the side of the milled head of the screw 7'. By screwing in the screw j the pin is forced into contact with the screw j and clamped in position and both the adjustment of the screw and of the clamp are in front where they can be readily handled.
Means are provided for gaging one lateral edge of the paper and for this purpose we provide a gage e which is fixed on the end of a horizontally disposed spindle clamped by a set screw 6 in an opening in the lower end of an arm 0. The upper end of the arm is clamped on a horizontal rod f fixed to the face of the machine and by sliding the arm 0 along the rod the gage 6 may be located in any desired position, the gage proper having a finer adjustment by the adjustment of the position of its spindle.
The vertical motion of the slide it is ef fected by means of gear teeth h on each end of the slide which engage gear teeth on the shaft (4 and the shaft is oscillated by a lever g pivoted at its end to a connecting rod 9 operated as here shown by a foot lever 9 although any suitable means may be used to oscillate the shaft, either foot power or mechanical power.
In operating the multiple punch the punch members and gage members are slipped in from either side of the machine, each sliding along the flange b and being clamped thereto in the desired position according to the location of the holes and the rear ends being held down by the lower edge of the plate cl. In adjusting the punch and gage members the set screws in front are simply released and the members pushed along to the desired position. In the adjustment of the gage members as before indicated, the adjusting screw is on the face of the block and easily handled. The punch is strong in construction, cheaply built and powerful, capable of being used on paper or metal and of doing a great variety of work.
We claim 1. In a multiple punching machine, the combination of a self contained punch or gage member adapted to slide on the bed of the machine and having a slot on its upper side, a stationary holding panel having a horizontal flange onits lower edge, adapted to fit in said slot whereby the said member is adapted to slide laterally and to be held in position.
2. In a multiple punching machine, the
combination of a self contained punch or gage member adapted to slide on the bed of the machine and having a slot on its upper forward side, a stationary'holding panel having a horizontal flange on its lower edge adapted to fit in said slot and a horizontal guide piece adapted to hold down the rear end of said member.
3. In a multiple punching machine, the combination of a self contained punch member adapted to slide on the base of the machine and having a. slot in its upper side, and carrying a vertically movable punch holder with a head on its upper end, a holding panel having a horizontal lower edge adapted to fit in said slot and a vertically movable slide having a horizontal lower edge in sliding engagement with said head and adapted to operate said punch holder.
4. In a multiple punching machine, the combination of a self contained punch member adapted to slide on the base of the machine and having a slot in its upper side near its front end and carrying a vertically movable punch holder with a head on its upper end in rear of said slot, a holding panel having a horizontal lower edge adapted to fit in said slot and a vertically movable slide having a horizontal lower edge in sliding engagement with said head and adapted to operate said punch holder.
5. In a multiple punching machine, the combination of a self contained punch member adapted to slide on the bed of the machine and having a slot on its upper side near its front end and carrying a vertically movable punch holder with a head on its upper end in rear of said slot, a holding panel having a horizontal lower edge adapted to fit in said slot, a vertically movable slide having a horizontal lower edge in sliding engagement with said head and a horizontal guide piece adapted to hold down the rear end of said punch member.
6. In a multiple punching machine the combination of a gage member composed of a block adapted to slide on the bed of the machine, a holding panel having a horizontal flange on its lower edge in sliding engagement with the top of said block, said block having a recess extending from the front rearward, a gage plate adapted to slide in said recess from front to rear, a nut on said gage plate, a screw journaled in said block for moving the nut and a clamp for clamping said screw.
7. In a multiple punching machine, the combination of a gage member, composed of a block adapted to slide laterally on the bed of the machine, guides for said block, said block being provided with a recess extending from the front rearward, a gage plate adapted to slide in said recess from front to rear, a nut on said gage plate, a screw journaled in said block engaging said nut, 21.
clamping pin adapted to impinge on the side of said screw and having an inclined surface, a clamping screw having a conical surface adapted to impinge on the inclined surface of said pin and to force the pin against the screw.
8. In a multiple punching machine, the combination of a self contained punch or gage member adapted to slide on the bed of the machine, and a stationary holding panel having a holding edge substantially parallel With the bed of the machine, said holding edge being in sliding engagement With the punch or gage member.
9. In a multiple punching machine, the
combination of a self contained punch or gage member adapted to slide on the bed of the machine and a stationary holding panel having a holdin edge substantially parallel With the bed 0 the machine, said holding edge being in sliding engagement With the top of the punch or gage member.
