Description

D. L. HARBISON.
ENVELOP MOISTENER.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 25, 1911.
Patented May 20, 1913.
INVENTOR E Z. Hajj/50a ATTORNEYS UNl @T ENVELOP-IVLOISTENER.
Application filed November 25, 1911.
To (zl whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL L. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Mo-isteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
tening device, and my invention'aims to provide a device that can be easily and quickly manipulated for moistening the gummed or adhesively coated flap of an envelop and then sealing the flap, thereby obviating the necessity of licking or moistening the gummed flap with the tongue, such practice being deleterious to health.
Another object of this invention is to provide an envelop moistening device with a detachable moistening pad that can be easily removed and renewed when worn.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type with a novel reservoir for feeding water or mucilage to the envelop moistening pad.
A still further obj eot of this invention is to provide a device of the above type that is inexpensive to manufacture, durable and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same,.partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the device.
A device in accordance with this invention comprises a handle 1 having one end thereof provided with a flat head 2, said head having projecting oppositely disposed arms3 and 4. The head 2 is hollow or recessed to provide a liquid reservoir 5 and said reservoir is filled through the medium of an opening 6 in the top or bottom side of said head. The opening 6 has the walls thereof screw threaded to receive a plug or cap 7 that can be easily and quickly removed to permit of the reservoir being filled.
Specification of Letters Patent.
This invention relates to an envelop mois- Patented May 20, 1913.
Serial No. 662,317.
The arm 4 is provided with a longitudinal port 8 in communication with the reservoir 5 through the medium of a port 9 and communicating with the port 8 are a plurality of equally spaced openings 10 that are in communication with a longitudinal dove-tailed groove 11 formed in the outer side of the arm 4. The groove 11 extends from one end of the arm in proximity to the opposite end thereof, and this groove receives a dove-tailed tongue 12 of a pad holder 13. The pad holder 13 has a pad 14 and openings 15 adapted to register with the openings 10. The pad holder is mounted in the arm 4 by placing the same in one end thereof, the opposite end of the arm limiting the inward movement of said holder, whereby the openings 15 will regisister with the openings 10. The pad 14 can be made of felt, sponge or any other absorbent material.
The confronting faces of the arms 3 and 4 are provided with longitudinal dovetailed grooves 16 for dove-tailed bearings 17. The bearings 17 are of a less length than the grooves 16 and the inner ends of said bearings are connected by coiled compression springs 18 to the head 2. The bearings 17 are limited in their movement by pins or screws 19 extending into slots 20 formed in the upper faces of the bearings 17.
Journaled in the bearings 17 are the ends of aspindle or shaft 21 supporting a roller 22. The roller 22 is yieldably supported, whereby when pressure is brought to bear upon the device, said roller will yield before injuring the flap of an envelop over which it is passed.
In the practice of my invention, the device is manipulated in one hand, the pad 14 is first passed over the gummed or adhesively coated side of an envelop flap to moisten the same. The flap is then closed and the roller 22 passed over the flap to seal the same. This operation can be eX- peditiously performed and the flap of the 'envelop securely sealed.
The device is made of light and durable metal and is susceptible to any desired ornamentation or advertisements.
What- I claim is A device for the purposes set forth comprising a flat head formed with a chamber constituting a reservoir, an arm projecting forwardly from one end of said head at right angles with respect thereto and pro vided with a longitudinally extending passage closed at its forward end, said head provided with a passage extending in the direction of the length thereof and opening into the other end of said longitudinal passage, said passages disposed at right angles with respect to each other, said arm having one side formed with a series of openings extending at right angles with respect to and in communication with its passage and further provided with a longitudinally extending dove-tailed groove, a pad holder seated in said groove and having a series of openings registering with the openings of the arm, an absorbent pad connected to said holder, and a handle projecting rearwardly from said head.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
