- This invention relates .to improvements in gas valves and the object in the present invision is made for automatically closing the supply of gas to the burner, when the flame is accidentally extinguished. r
The invention also ludes means for taking up the wear on the valve plug, so
as toins'ure a tight valve.
' The invention further comprises a spring 'actuated' valve and a thermostat provided with means for releasing the spring action,
' so that when the heat of the flame is removed, by extinguishing the gas flame, the contraction of the thermostat willautomatically release said spring action and permit it-to close the valve, thus cutting 01f the supply of gas to the burner.

The. numeral 1 designates a gas supply pipe and 2 an ordinary gas burner. Interposed between this burner and the end of the supply pipe 1, I place my valve, the casing 3' of which is attached to the screwthreaded end of the pipe 1, thecasing being rovided at its top with a stem 4 for the burner 2. In the casing 3 'I have shown a lug valve 5 whose rear 'or smaller end is ormed with an annular depression 6, thus forming a head 7 on the extremity of the plug. Y

This device comprises a bifurcated member which fits loosely over the reduced portion of the plug, and bears against the under side of the head; oneor both of its legs 8 being bent inwardly and engaging the casing 3 by entering an indentation 9 therein, this will prevent relative rotation asbetween the member 8 and the casing. The free end 17 of this thermostat is pro vided with a latch-having two stops or ledges thereon, 18 and 19. The forward endof the valve plug 5- is reduced in diameter, as shown at 20 and carries a pin 21 ada ted to contact with 9. lug 22 on the face 0 the casing 3.when the valve is closed and the the plug valve is also provided with a loosely mounted sleeve 25 and its .inner edge is cut away for a portion of its diameter, as shown at 26, thus forming a contact point for engagement with the pin 21 when the sleeve rotates on the valve stem. This sleeve also carries an arm 30 whose free end is formed with an opening for engagement with the supply of gascut 01f. This reduced end of p free end of the thermostat, through the latch stops 18 and 19. A suitable spring 33 enga es this arm, its opposite end being attac ed to a stationary point, shown in Fig. 1 as attached to an extension 10 of the thermostat'bracket. This spring is normally in tension when the arm 30 is in engagement with the free end of the thermostat.
' The operation of the device is as follows :--The plug valve is free to be turned in either direction, that is to open or close it, without interfering with any of the other parts of the device. When the valve is open,
and the gas ignited, the flame will expand the thermostat 16, and this will cause the latch to-disengage at the point 19, with the arm 30; the spring 33 will draw the arm down, but the latch will again engage the point 18 and will continue to hold it there as long as the flame burns, or as long as the thermostat remains expanded. When, for any reason, the flame is extinguished, the thermostat will contract, release its hold on the arm 30, and the spring 33 will draw the arm down. As the arm and the sleeve 25 to which it is attached, move around on'the valve stem, the contact point 26 of the sleeve will meet the pin 21 on the stem and through this, will turn the valve and close 01f the supply of gas to the burner. The movement of the valve is limited by the pin 21 contacting with the lug 22.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described the combination of a gas supply pipe, a burner, a thermostat provided with two latch points at its free end, a valve casing, a plug valve therefor, a pin carried by said valve, a sleeve loosely mounted on said valve and provided 10 with a ledge for engaging said pin, and a spring actuated arm carried bysaid sleeve,
