Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR RoUsE SUT cLirrE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Leigh, in the county of Lancashire, England, have invented certain new and kuseful Improvements in Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to improvement-s in the construction of kilns for burning ore briquets, ordinary clay bricks, or other earthenware, goods, and the like.
The obj-ect of the invention is to improve the firing arrangement of such kilns, and especially to provide that the heating gases shall be of a neutral character as regards their reducing, or oxidizing condition.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a form of the invention as applied to a continuous kiln for burning bricks.
Figure l is a plan of the kiln. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section of Fig. l; the left hand portion being on the line C-D, and the center portion on the line EF of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section of the kiln on the line A-B of Fig. V1 to an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 shows a modified form of the air supply flue. v
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that Fig. l shows on the left hand side a plan on the ground line, in the middle a plan of the top of the kiln, and on the right hand side a sectional plan through the hot air flues.
This invention consists, Hrstly, in the construction of a transverse Hue g beneath the Hoor of' the kiln at one end of each chamber and in connecting the ends of such Hues with an airV tube Z and steam nozzle m byi means of which a regulated amount of either steam and fresh air mixed, or steam and hot air, can be forced under pressure up through the fire grate @and fuel; and secondly, in the provision of a series of air inlets n along the whole length of the furnace, immediately above the grating c, -so that air for combustion may be equally distributed throughout the furnace and a completely neutral gas is obtained for the burning of the goods c'. e. a gas which neither has a reducing, nor an oxidizing effect on the goods; this is an essential of great importance in the burning of ore briquets.
In the drawing is shown a double row, multiple chamber kiln with twelve chainbers l 12, each chamber having a Hre grate such as a, b, 0, transversely across it and adjoining one of its boundary walls such as d, c, f, in which are openings such as a in Fig. 3 for kthe admission of air over the fire.

The transverse Hues in the Hoor of the Lz chamber are shown at g beneath the grate c,
being connected at their inner ends to an upright' extension g1 inl the centraldividing wall z' of the kiln; the air tube may also bel applied to a horizontal continuation of the base Hue g leading to theoutside of the kiln at the ground level, and in a kiln having a single line of chambers this latter forni would always be employed. This fire gra-te flue g1 is provided with'frames 7c cl where it opens through the Hoor of the Hue and the roof nof the kiln respectively; a hole isl left therein through which an iron air tube Z may be inserted so as to reach into the Hue g1; into the bell mouth of this air tube Z a steam pipe m is introduced and a jetof steam caused to enter; this has the effect of forcing' a considerable quantity of air and steam through the Hue g and up through the fire grate c upon whichr the fuelis placed.`
The Hue g though continued so asto reach the outside of the kiln is there closed by a damper It; in the event of the gas feeding apparatus just. described not being in use this damper would be opened and fresh air would reach the fire grate in this way though not of course under any pressure. XV hen the injector apparatus is withdrawn from the frames 76701 the holes therein are closed withcap's or covers fitting thereover.
The special advantage of the mixture of air and steam under pressure being supplied to the grate, is ythat gas is produced above vthe fuel and burned'in combination with the air for `combustion entering through the openings such as n in. the division wall of may themselves be removable if desired,V
covers 7c 701 being used to close the insertion holes.
In a modification the steam nozzle m and air tube Z may open within a hot air Hue j formed longitudinally along the double chamber kiln and the air injected into the base Hue g will thus be at a high temperature.
In either type of kiln hot air from the previous chamber will enter through openings n in the dividing wall above the grate and will thus supply heat for combustion of the fuel thereon, in addition to the steam, or steam and air mixture, coming through the grate from the base Hue.
The grate will be fed with small coal in the ordinary way by firing holes in the top of the kiln, and the Hre will be separated from the body of the chamber by a dwarf wall p so that it does not come into contact with the goods being burned.
@ther details of the kiln are such as are in common use, for instance the longitudinal hot air Hue j with connecting Hues such as r] r to the several chambers by which hot air may be brought in or taken away therefrom for preliminary drying, and the damper Hues s, t, by which when the damper u is open, the products of combustion pass out of a chamber and away tol the chimney through the smoke Hues 0J having first tra-versed a number of the chambers. Also the operation of such a kiln is so well known as not to need further description, but by the use of this invention all the benefits of such a kiln worked with what is known as producer gas from a separate gas producer are achieved with much greater eiliciency both in time and material.
It should be understood that in certain cases the down Hues g1 and Q may be combined, utilizing the same Hue alternately for the supply of hot air for drying purposes and for the supply of air for combustion. Further instead of taking the air for combustion from the outside of the kiln the opfening of the air tube may be in the hot air Hue as shown dotted (Fig. 3), thus hot air for combustion may be supplied which is of great advantage in obtaining efiiciency.
Fig. 4: shows a modification in which the air supply and hot air Hues are combined. The down Hue g1 is divided into four compartments each compartment in separate connection with a horizontal length entering the transverse Hue g at a different point beneath the Hoor of t-he chamber. By introducing the air at several points in the fire grate Hue g and regulating the How of air in the several divisions a much better control of the Hre transversely is obtained; in such a case a separate air tube would be required for each division of the Hue g1.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination in a kiln chamber, of a transverse furnace grating at the Hoor level adjoining a chamber partition wall, a transverse Hue beneath same, an extension Hue from the transverse Hue to the outer air passing across a hot air Hue, an air tube to same arranged to open either in the hot air Hue or in the outer air, a steam injector pipe cooperating with the air tube, a chamber partition wall forming one side of the furnace and having distributed openings therein for the purpose of introducing a regularly distributed air supply to the furnace above the grating', and a dwarf wall forming the opposite side of the furnace, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a kiln chamber, of a transversev furnace grating at the Hoor level adjoining a chamber partition wall, a transverse Hue beneath same, a subdivided extension Hue from the transverse Hue to the outer air passing across a hot air Hue, and having its sub-divisions opening into the transverse underground Hue at different points in its length, an air tube to each subdivision of the extension Hue arranged to open either in the hot air Hue or in the outer air, a steam injector pipe cooperating with each air tube a chamber partition wall forming one side of the furnace and having distributed openings therein for the purpose of introducing a regularly distributed air supply to the furnace above the grating, and a dwarf wall forming the opposite side of the furnace, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
