To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that` I, MICHAEL B. GREEN, a citizen of the. United States, residing 'at -Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have inyentednew'and useful Improvements in Compression-Boxes, of which-)the following is a specification.
This invention relates 'tov` compression boxes and 'more' particularly tof that type 'which are specifically adapted -ffor use in connection with cotton seeddproeesses.-
The principal 4obect Aof the 'invention is to.4
obviate the diiicu ties encountered in the usevof the present perforatedplate and to obtain, a quantityA `of oil Afrom' the' cairev inexcess of that obtained through-thev use of -said plate.V While the antiquated hairmat was the -ideal .base for compression boxes,
vthe.proezas was extremely slow and vcan not:
be used at the' present day owing to the slowness of operationandrto the almost prohibitive expense'in producing these mats.
It is the object of this invention, fthere i forefto secure the effectiveness or the pro ducing qualities of the hair mat with the speed of the .perforated plate land to obviate4 i the difficulties encountered with the latter,
such as lack of porosity and inability to stand the Strain.
Further objects of this invention will ap- .pear as the following specic description is` read inconnection with the accompanying d hichfo art fthisalic-l rawmgw rmsap o' P-p a wranged. in recesses in the side bars.'v
tion, and in which:- f u Figurel is aside elevation vshowing-.the
' box mounted on. an. ordinary compression ram. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the abutting plate removed. Fig. 3 is `avdetail end elevationof one of the. intermediate bars. Fig. 4.- is a similar view of an end bar.` Fig. 5 is a transverse sectionalview lar view on the line 6&6k of F1g..2.` Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail plan view .of a plu;
rality of bars. Fig. 8 is-a longitudinal sec tionalview through the mat. Fig.V 9 is astruction to the plunger of which is secured a head 2 having mounted 'thereon a mat receiving platform or box which has formed.
thereon an upstanding flange 4`extending entirely around the same and, dependin flanges 5V arranged at the -`sidesthereo u This ,box` is also provided with an outlet' VSpecification ef'Letters Patent. Pafnted May 13,`,19`13. Appnauon filed :rune 15, 1912. serial ivo. 703,369.
the grooves tothe top of thebars. .The slots extend inwardly on diagonal lines and are adapted to alternatewith the slots of are adapted to register with those of the adjoining bars andv all of the bars-are connectedv together by end pieces 9 whichjhave the side bars 17' are provided with longitudi-I ;will vbe hereinafter described and are pro?.4 vided with openings 14 which registerwith `the channels between the bars produced .by` the groove 7. Each bar is connected -Jto 'its' whichare arranged in the longitudinal cenv terof the mat and the bars are also .connectedtogether adjacent their ends by key The end pieces 9 'are provided with suitable ears 18 which are adapted. to receive `fastening bolts for ,securing vthe matto theplatform or supporting box 3. j v
Extendingup -from the base of the niachine are four separate columns or rods 1'9 connected together at their upper ends byfa'n abutment' plate '201v and slidably mounted' upon these rods are aplurality of boxes, all
of which carry'mats-similarto the one'just described. These iboxes are provided with the flanges 4 and 5 and each is-provided with -an opening 21 through'which the oil drains theV boxes preferably conformed "to Ytheoutline of the upper surface of the mat, as shown, and when the meal cake is removed,
ears 22, which lslidably receive the rods or columns 19, arealso slotted, as shownfat 23,
in opposite sides thereof` which have coins municating' therewith vertical slots 8 extending inwardly from the sides-and from rods 16.1 which are .seated in grooves in the/W; bottom fof the bars and have 'heads 17 ar`. )9b-5 adjoiningbars, as shown. The grooves-7` inwardly turned ends 10 to seatin rece'es 1 11 formed in the side bars. 'The interina-v diatelbars 6' are preferably curved trans-' versely on theirlupper' faces, as'shown, andy nally extending lips 13 arranged atthekisfw l thereof-and projecting vertically. Thegend pieces are preferably shrunk v.on'after'allfio the bars have .been connected"togetherglasf-l adjoining bar by double keyfstone locks-15j@ u v -ioo to the box below.- The under-g surface of it has the'form of the 'mat and the under- I surface of the box stamped therein. l'so as'! to permit the passage of supporting Iugs'or projection`sf24. These projections or lugs 24 are graduatedin size, as shown in iEig. 71, the lar est being arranged at the bottomfand 'gra ually decreasing in size and in length rom the bottom to the top so that "the bottom-mat Will'have thev longest slot and be permitted to pass all other lugs or pro jections above the same. The boxes in descending 'WiIl, therefore, engage and be supported'upon. the proper length of lug so as to beheld in spaced relation when the plunger of the ram is at its lowermost posi- A`dom-.thereby giving. s'uiicient room for the Y, of the bars 6 and l2 abovethe groove ynot as wide as the lower portion of the bars "so that when the bars -are joined together by 1afo- Y 1. lA mat for oil presses comprising a plu- `insertionof the meal 'cake between the mat and the under side of the box above.
"It willbe noticed that the upper portion the keysiand end pieces in the form of a Avmat, there wi-ll be a plurality of longitudinalslots extending the full length of the mat l and communicating with the slots 8 inthe i rality of bars having longitudinal substantially semi-circular channels in opposite sides thereof, intermediate their height, and diagonally arranged slots extending inwardly from the sides of the bars and. Vertically from the top of the bars to the rooves, said slots in the bars alternating with those of the adjoining bars, and means 'Tisto connect the bars together at their ends,
and keys for connecting the bars together' tending inwardly on diagonal lines from the top to the channels, which -slots 'alternate with those of adjoining bars, end pieces for connecting the ends of the bars together,
and means passing through the end pieces for securing the bars to a box.
3. A mat for oil presses which comprises elongated bars'having Vlongitudinally extending substanti-ally semi-circular channels in opposite sides thereof adapted to register with the channels in adjoining bars, said bars being narrower above the channels than below the same and having lateralv lots extending inwardly on dia onal lines rom the top to the channels, w ich slots alternate with those of adjoining bars, yend pieces for connecting the ends of the bars together, transverse keys for connecting the bars dtogether adjacent their ends, and intermediate vertically extending dovetail keys for connecting the bars intermediate their length.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
