A 7TORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFF E.
CHARLES C. TYLER, or BRIDGEPOBT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR To REMINGTON ARMS AND AMMUNITION COMPANY, or re gn, YORK, A oRronATIoN on NEW YORK- ama-seesaw- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. TYLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Bridgeport, county ofv Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Magazine-Firearms, of which the followvert any magazine ingis a specification.
, This invention is applicable to ma azine firearms generally andhas for its ob]ect to provide an attachment for .the magazine that will reduce the number of possible shots to two. In other words the invention is a converter havin for its object to conrearm into a two shot firearm and no more.
With this end in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combina-- ment; and Fig. 2 is a detail sectionalyiew on an enlarged scale, of the magazine and the converter.
10 denotes the barrel, 11 the receiver, 12 the magazine, 13 the magazine. cap, 14 the magazine spring, and l5the follower, all of which may be of any ordinary or preferred magazine cap and the end of the follower and normally acts to hold the follower at the inner end of the magazine or in engageinent with a cartridge therein, as shown in the drawing. The follower is provided with i .an enlarged outer end which engages an internal shoulder 16 on the magazine to limit the inward movement of the follower and also serves as a bearing upon the inner wall l of the magazme,
'In order to con' ei't a magazine. firearm into a\ two-shotfirearm' without interfering with the mechanism of the arm, so that it is Application filed November 29, 1912. Serial No. 733,986.
capable of reconversion into a magazine arm, it is necessary to limit the forward movement of the follower so as to prevent the insertion of but one cartridge into the magazine in addition to one in the barrel. Iaccomplish this result by providing a long tudinal stop 17 in the magazine which is rigidly secured to the -magazine cap, lies within themagazine spring and extends backward in the magazine far enough to be engaged by the follower should an attempt be made to insert a second cartridge into the magazine, as will readily be understood from Fig. 2, in which a cartridge is indicated by 18. This stop may be either a rod or a tube but is preferably a tube on account of lightness, as shown in the drawing. As a means of attaching the tubular stop to the magazine cap, I preferably employ a stud 19 having a lug20 which is passed through a hole in the center of the magazine cap and headed down to rigidly secure it to the cap. The stud isprovided at its forward end with a hub 21"which is passed into the forward end of the tubular stop and the stop is riveted or otherwise permanently secured" thereto.
In use, the operator can insert a cartridge in the barrel and one cartridge but no more in the magazine for the reason that should an attempt be made to inserta second cartridge into the magazine the end of the follower, indicated by'22, will engage the rear end of the stop and prevent the insertion of the additionalv cartridge. I thus strictly limit the capacity of the firearm to two cartridges by restricting the forward movement of the follower. To reconvert the firearm into a magazine arm, it is simply re-- quired to remove the magazine cap, and with it the stop, and replace'it with a'cap not provided with a stop. 1 v
' Having thus described my invention I claim:
In a magazine firearm, the combination with the magazine, cap, magazine spring, and follower, of a converter for limiting the contents of the magazine to a single cartridge comprising the providing of a central hole in the magazine cap, a stud having a 2 i h meme;
lug riveted in said hole and e hub at its In testimon whereof-I affix my signature other end, and a tube riveted to the hilb and. in presence 0 two Witnesses.
