Be it known that I, Josnrn CARTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Saskatoon, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multimagazine Self-Locking liifles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rifles and more particularly to magazine rifles of the repeating type, and the primary object of the invention 1s to provide a gun of this type having a revolving magazine carrier whereby a large number of cartridges can be carried and fired without necessitating the reloading of the rifle.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved multi-magazine repeating rifle, ofrthe trombonetype which can be pumped in the ordinary manner and which does not require alteration of the standard parts of the rifle other than the magazine.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved repeating rifle embodying a plurality of magazine tubes, which are adapted to be brought successively into. alinement with the breech tube and provide means for locking the rifle, so that the same cannot be pumped, when the cartridges in one of the magazine tubes, which is an alinement with the breech tube, is exhausted.
-A further object of the invention is to provide a multi-magazine repeating rifle, which shall be of light weight, compact, and well balanced.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved rifle of the above character, whlch 1s durable and ei'licient in Figure 8 is an elevation of one of the in ner tubes detached from the assembly,

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similarreference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the se 'eral views, the numeral 1 generally indicates a repeating rifle, and 2 the improved multi-ma azine assembly therefor. T he rifle 1, as shown, is a Remington repeater of the standard type of the general type of which U. S. Patent 963,171 is an example, but it is to be understood that the improved assembly can be associated with any of the well known repeating rifles, and the same includes the stock 3, the barrel 4-, the breech casing 5, and the reciprocating breech tube 6, which is operably connected with the breech block and the other interior mechanism, not shown. Disposed and secured intermediate the barrel 4: and breech tube 6 is a leaf spring 8, which braces and steadies the breech tube and also forms a stop to prevent the gun from being pumped when the cartridges are exhausted, as hereinafter more fully described. The ordinary magazine tube and hand grip is dispensed with and the improved multi-magazine assembly 2 cured to the forward and rear revolving disk shaped platesll and 12. The plates 11. and 12 are provided with a plurality of alined apertures 13 for receiving the tubes and the same are equidistantly spaced from each other and from the center of thetubes and the apertures 13 formed in the rear disk 12 are threaded so that the'exterior threaded ends 14 of. the tubes 10 can be fitted therein. The plates 11 and 12 are also provided with alined central centering openings 15, which rotatably receive a slide rod 16 which is slidably mounted in the depending guide arm 17 carried by the lower portion of the barrel 4-. As will be realized plates 11 and 12 are mounted against sliding movement independently of said rods 16 due to the connection of the breech tubes thereto. The upper end of the guide arm 17 is dovetailed as at 18 and is fitted into a dovetail groove 19 formed in the lower portion of the barrel. The rear end of slide rod 16 is threaded into the non-rotatable plate 19, which is provided with a central threaded aperture 20 for receiving the threaded end of the rod. This non-rotatable plate 19 is pro vided with rearwardly extending spaced cars 21, which embrace the sides of the breech tube 6 and the same are secured to the breech tube by means of fastening elements 22. The plate, as shown, is provided with a cartridge receiving opening 2 which alines with the openings in the breech tube so as to permit the cartridges to be fed into the tube. The rear plate 12 is provided with a plurality of notches 25 which are located directly opposite the apertures 13 so as to permit the ready location of the magazine tubes, so as to facilitate the alining of the same with the breech tube and, if so desired, a small leaf spring 26 may be carried by the non-rotatable plate 19 for engaging in the notches 25 so as to prevent the accidental rotation of the tubes on the rod 16, while the gun is being pumped. The tnbeslO each include the outer casing 2'7 and the inner casing 28 in which is slidably mounted the follower 29 for feeding the cartridges to the breech tube. The follower is normally urged towards the breech tube by means of expansion coil spring 29, which is confined in the tube as shown. The followers 29 are provided with a slot 30 which receives a dog 31, which is pivotally held in position by means of a pivot pin 32 extending through the walls of the slot. The dog is normally held in projected position out of the slot by means of a leaf spring 33. The dog 31 is normally held in the slot by the walls of theinner tube 28 and when the cartridges are exhausted from the tubes and the follower reaches the rear ends of the tubes, the dogs are adapted to ride out of the slots 30 and protrude through alined slots 3% and 35 formed in the inner and outer tubes 28 and 27 so as to engage the leaf spring 8 to prevent the rifle from being pumped, which designates to the user of the rifle that the cartridges in the particular tube are exhausted. The inner tubes 28 are provided with a longitudinally extending slot 37, which is adapted to receive a pin 38 carried by the follower, so as to prevent the dogs from turning in the tubes, so as to hold the dogs in alinement with the slots 3%. The inner tubes 28 are provided with the ordinary caps 39 carrying the spring catches &0 which are adapted to engage in the slots tl formed in the terminals of the outer tube, so as to prevent the accidental displacement of the inner tube.-
Tn operation of the improved device, the inner tubes 28 are moved forwardly and the cartridges are inserted therein, and when the same are full, the inner tubes are reinserted in position and the followers urge the cartridges towards the rear ends of the tubes. The rifle is then ready for use, and the magazine assembly is grasped. in the same manner as the ordinary hand piece and slid. rearwardly and forwardly which inserts another cartridge into the barrel and cooks the rifle for firing. After the gun has been fired, the assembly is again pushed rearwardly and then forwardly, which ejects the shell and inserts the cartridge into position, and this operation is continued until all the cartridges are exhausted from the tube alining with the breech tube at this time, the follower having reached the rear of the tube, the dog extends through the alined slots 34 and engage the forward end of the spring 8 and thus prevent the gun from being pumped. The tubes are then rotated, so as to bring another full tube into alinement with the breech tube, at which time the gun may be pumped in the regular manner. The springs 26 for engaging the grooves 25 permit the magazine tubes to be forcibly rotated but prevent the accidental rotation thereof.
In Figures 11 and 12 is illustrated a means for preventing the standard repea ting rifle from being pumped when the cartridges are all exhausted from the ordinary magazine tube and, in this construction, the follower and dog are shaped substantially as shown in the preferred construction and the breech tube 6 is provided with a slot 45 in the upper surface thereof, so as to permit the dog 31 to ride through the same, when all of the cartridges are exhausted and the dog is adapted to urge a pivoted catch 31 on tube 6 into a notch 46 formed in the lower surface of the leaf spring 8.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is
the most efficient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, When required Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
VZhat I claim is:
1. In a gun, a barrel, a breech tube, a re volving magazine slidably carried by the barrel, and means operatively mounting the magazine for coaction with the breech tube.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a repeating rifle including a barrel, and breech tube, of a rotary magazine therefor slidably mounted on the barrel and operatively connected with the breech tube.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a repeating rifle includ ing a barrel, and breech tube, of a magazine slidable relatively to the barrel and including a plurality of tubes arranged for move- F ment selectively into alinement with the breech tube.
4:. In a device of the class described, the combination with a repeating rifle including a barrel, a breech tube, of a magazine therefor including a plurality of cartridge tubes, means slidably and rotatably mounting the magazine upon the barrel, and means to prevent sliding and rotation of said magazine when the cartridges are exhausted from one of said cartridge tubes.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a repeating rifle including a barrel, and a breech tube, of a magazine therefor including a plurality of cartridge tubes arranged to be brought successively into alinement with the breech tube, means slidably mounting the magazine on the barrel, and means carried by each of the tubes for preventing actuation of the magazine when the tube in alinement with the breech tube becomes exhausted.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a repeating rifle including a barrel, and a breech tube, of a magazine including a plurality of cartridge tubes rotatably mounted on the barrel, means for slidably mounting the magazine on the barrel, said tubes being adapted to be brought successively into alinement with the breech tube, a follower carried by each tube, a dog pivotally carried by the follower, and a stop carried by the rifle andarranged in the path of the dog, as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a firearm, a cartridge carrier, including an outer casing, an inner casing, said inner casing having a longitudinally extending groove, the rear ends of the inner and outer casing having alined slots, and a follower mounted in the inner tube and hav ing a pin arranged to slidably fit in said longitudinally extending groove, and a spring pressed dog arranged to extend through the alined grooves in the rear ends of the casing, when the follower has reached its real-most position.
8. In a firearm including a barrel, a cartridge carrier means, a rigidv plate carried by the forward end of said means, a depending hanger carried by the barrel, a rod slidably carried by the hanger and secured to the rigid plate, disks rotatably mounted upon the rod at the forward and rear ends thereof, and a plurality of cartridge tubes carried by the disks and arranged to successively aline with said means, as and for the purpose specified.
