SPRING-MATTRESS SIDE GUARD.
Specificatignpglietters Patent.
Patented May 13, 19.13.
Application filed September 7, 1911. Serial No. 648,135.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern A Be it known that I, Aoous'r J. Knnoz name, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State Of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Mattress Side Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spring mats tresses, and more particularly to side guards therefor, the object of the invention being to provide an improved side guard by means of which the stuiied mattress will be prevented from spreading and slipping over the edge of the spring mattress so that it will be retained in its box'like forn'i.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved. side guard which can be readily made up oi short flat members linked together in a very simple and ellicient manner to provide a strong and durable structure and one which is cmnparw tively inexpensive to niarmfacture, and which also will have su'tlicient flexibility in practice to enable it tovyield under abnormal strains, but so formed that it will be normally maintained in an upright position.
In the drawings accompanying and fornr ing part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spring mattress having this improved side guard attached thereto; Fig. 52 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of one of the side guards attached to the mattress; Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the upright members or posts; and Fig. 4: is a detail view of one of the bottom members to which such up right members are attached.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings. i
This improved side guard in the present instance is made up of upright members and longitudinally extending members linked together in a peculiar manner, each of these members being formed of flat stock. In the present improvement the spring mattress bottom is likewise formed of similar stock, and comprises a series of lengthwise members 2 connected by a series of trans verse men'ibers 3. For the purpose of connecting these transverse and lengthwise extending members together, the transverse members 3 are provided with openings or angular slots 10 for the reception of the bent bifurcated ends 11 of the lengthwise extending members 2, so that each transverse member 3 connects a pair of lengthwise extending members 2, while each lengthwise extending member 2 connects a pair of transverse members 3. Each of the outermost transverse members 3 of the bottom which projects to the edge of such bottom is provided with an end bent upon itself, as at 4, Fig. -l-, forming a loop, and this end is provided with an elongated slot (3 for the reception of the T-shaped end 7 of an upright member 8 ol' the side guard, the articulation of the parts being obtained by inserting the member 8 wiih its head T cdgewisc into the slot 0 and then turning the same transversely so that the head 7 will extend crosswise of the slot.
l iach upright member 8 is provided with one or more sets of openings or slots .l. ac cording to the number of lengthwise extending bars or members If. that may be used to form the side guard. In the present iustance two sets of openings or slots 2) are shown, one set at the upper end ol' each upright member 8 and the other set interme diate the ends of such member. Each of the lengthwise extemling numbers 12 ot' the side guard has its cuds bifurcated and bent, as at 13, to project. into the slots 9. The upper end of each upright member 8 may be cut oti', but in practice it is preferred to bend the same over, as at H, to provide a reinforced portion at the upper edge of such upright members. Each cud bar or member of the side guard is preferably connected by a helical spring 15 with an upstanding bracket 16 secured to the end of the trans verse angle member or bar, one located at each end of the bottom, and between which bars the. bottom is stretched under tension. By means of these helical springs and brackets the side guards are maintained in an up right position and tension is imparted thereto, so that each guard will be maintained under constant lengthwise tension. thermore, it will be observed that there may be sutlicieut play at the points where the up right members 8 are articulated with the transverse members 3 to enable a dill'ercut tension to be imparted to the side guards t'roiu that which is imparted to the bottom by the helical springs shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Fur-
The present. improvement provides a side guard which not. only-may be formed of fiat members or stock, but one which is comparatively noiseless and yet extremely fiexible and durable in construction.
I claim as my invention:
1. A metallic mattress comprising a pair of transverse members and a bottom suspensively supported therebetween, said bottom -including a series of: crosswise extending flat metal strips extending to the side edges of the bottom, a side-guard at each side of said bottom and made up of short upright flat metal strips having unbent lower ends and lengthwise extending short flat metal strips articulated with said upright strips, the lower unbent end of each upright strip having a hinged connection with the outer end of a bottom fiat strip, whereby the bottom and side-guards are articulated along the lowermost edges of the guards and the outermost edges of the bottom. 7
2. A metallic mattress comprising a pair of transverse members and a bottom suspensively supported therebetween, said bottom including a series of crosswise flat metal strips extending to the side edges of the bottom, a side-guard nteach side of said bottom; and made up of short upright fiat metal strips having unbent lower ends and lengthwise extending short fiat metal strips articulated with said upright strips by angular formed slots and hooks extending thereinto carried by said upright and lengthwise extending at strips, the lower unbent end of each upright strip having a hinged connection with the outer end of a bottom fiat strip whereby the bottom and slde-guards are ar ticulated along the lowermost edges of the guards and the outermost edges of the bottom.
3. A metallic mattress comprising a pair of transverse irons and --a bottom suspensively supported therebetween and including aseries of crosswise extending fiat metal strips, said bottom having at each side edge thereof a side guard, made up of short upright fiat metal strips having unbent lower ends and short lengthwise extending fiat metal strips articulated with said upright strips, said upright strips and bottom strips having one elongated slots and the other T- shaped unbent ends fo "the articulation thereof.
t. A metallic mattress comprising a pair of'transverse members and a bottom suspensively supported therebetween and including crosswise extending fiat metal strips, a pair of side guards each comprising a series of upright short fiat metal strips having unbent lower ends and lengthwise extending flat metal strips articulated together by hoops and openings carried by said strips, said sets of bottom strips and upright strips having one headed projections and the other openings for the reception of said headed projections crosswise in said openings, whereby said strips are articulated at the lower ends of the upright strips.
5. A metallic mattress comprising a bottom and transverse members to which it is connected, said bottom having transverse flat members each provided at its end with an elongated slot, said bottom alsohaving at each side edge thereof a side guard comprising a series of upright flat members having T- shaped unbent lower ends for insertion into said slots, said upright members also having slots, and lengthwise extending members having bent ends projecting through said slots. i l
