Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 11, 1911.
Patented May 13, 1913. Serial No. 620,391.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that l. FRANK TIN'MAN PiEIrPoN'r, residing at Salford, l'lorley, in the county ot Surrey, England, have invented a certain new and use't'ul Improvement `in h'lachines for the Casting and Composing ot' Single Types in Semitic Languages; and l do hereby declare the following to be a tull, clear, and exact description oit the same, reference being had to the accompzmying ('lrawings, forming a part oitI this specitication, and to the figures and letters ot' reiterence marked thereon.
This invention relates to the casting and composing ot single types in Semitic languages, the types after casting being assembled in justified lilies which are then arranged in column torm in a galley.
In the Semitic group ot languages or the group of languages to which I-lebrew and Arabic belong, the matter, while reading t'rom the top to the bottom of the page, as in English and European languages, reads from the right to the leit't hand end ot the line.
.According to this invention the matter is cast in the order reverse to composition itrem matrices upon which the characters are placed in the same position, as, but inverted and reversed from, an English character; that is to say, the character while justified in relation to the same two edges and occupying the same position on the matrix body as an English character, is turned in a horizontal plane through 180; mechanism is provided for assembling the successively cast types side by side in a line with the first cast type leading, and mechanism for delivering' the lines successively into a galley with the bottom ot the character in advance.
As embodied in a machine ot known construction for casting and composing matter in English and European languages and which casts the matter in order reverse to composition, the galley extends in the opposite direction to that in which the galley tor English matter extends, and it placed conveniently upon a different level trom the line assembly channel, mechanism being provided in accordance with this invention t'or conveying the lines ot type singly 'from one level to the other and t'or operating the galley rule or gate.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation ot' a portion o't' a single type-easting machine enibodying the present invention. Eigs. 2, 3 and 4, are similar views partly in section and showing the n'iechanism in ditl'erent positions assumed in the cycle ot' operations. Fig. 5 is a plan View o't Eig. l, showing the appa ratus in position on the casting machine. Eig. t is an end View o't part ot the apparatus, Eig. 7 is a plan view ot Fig. Fig. S shows two Il'cbrew matrices in inverted 65 plan. Fig. 9 is a plan ot one ot' the matrices of Eig. S, showing' the position otE the character on the body. Eig. 10 is a diagram showing' llebrew matte` as produced by the machine, and Eig. 11 shows a print taken 'from the matter ot Eig. 10.
Referring to the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7, wherein the invention is shown embodied in a well-known single type casting and composing machine such as Storms the subject matter of British Letters Patent No. 8G33 of 1899 and No. 8981 ot' 1901 (United States Patents (325,998 of May 30, 1899 and 674,375 ot' Way 21, 1901) it is convenient to relier here briefly to the parts of these machines more intimately connected with or coperating with mechanism embodying the invention. These parts comprise a two way movable die case equipped with a series ot matrices, means tor bringing any one oit' the latter to a common casting or centering point, a mold A provided with one or more mold-dimensioning and type ejecting members a working in the `mold cavity a'; a cross block A; a type carrier A2 which conveys the types from the mold to the entrance ot the line channel B; an ejector blade A3 for delivering the type from the carrier A2 into the line channel B; and a line hook C and movable line support C by which the completed line is conveyed along the line channel to the position opposite the entrance to the galley D. The construction and operation ot the parts referred to do not differ from those described in the specification of the before mentioned Letters Patent and do not call t'or further description here.
Tt should be noted that the line pusher, galley support and trip mechanism ot' the prior patented machine are omitted or rc moved for the accommodation of the alternative form about to be described.
In the present embodiment of the invention the galley D is mounted on an adjustable frame (Z and is placed at a higher level than the line channel B. The frame CZ has secured to it a slide CZ and is adjust-ably secured to a frame (Z2, the latter detachably secured to the bed or main frame of the machine.
D is a plate secured to the frame Z and forms a permanent entrance to the galley, being disposed between the inlet to the galley D and the line delivery mechanisms.
rlhe type X when ejected from the mold cavity a by the blade a is conveyed to the left hand end of the lin-e channel by the carrier A2 and delivered therefrom into the channel by the pusher A3, and when a line has been completed, the line hook C is automatically advanced and operated in a known manner to convey or move the assembled line of types to a position in line with the entrance to the galley D which, in the present instance, is situated above the level of the channel B. The line of types while .being conveyed to the galley entrance by .the line hook is supported at one end by the movable line support C and along one side by a stationary bar or block C3, Fig. l, adj ustably secured in brackets on the frame CZ and on the opposite side by a plate or bar E which reciprocates between t-he levels of the galley and the line channel as hereinafter described. The types in the line channel rest upon a plate F carried by or forming part of a lifting frame G which also carries the aforesaid plate E. The frame G is connected to a rod or pillar G by which it is raised and lowered between the levels 4of. the line channel .B and the galley D, and these movements are controlled from a cam H through a lever H', which has one of its ends in engagement with the cam, is pivoted at ZL and has its other end disposed below a collar g. rlhe movement of the lever H to raise the rod G is transmitted through the collar g to two rods g2 secured to a collar g3 and through a spring g4 to a collar g5 on the rod G. The downward movement of the frame G when released from the lifting movement of the cam is controlled by a spring gG interposed between a collar g on the rod G and the machine frame.
The rod G is made in two parts adjustably screwed together, the adjustment being controlled conveniently by a check nut g8, Fig. l. The upper end of the rod G passes through a sleeve G2 on the frame G and between the upper end of the slee-ve and a collar gg on the rod is disposed a Spring glo which forms a yielding connection between the frame and the rod, allowing the latter to move upward after it has raised the frame and the shelf carrying the type to the level of the galley D. The eX- tent of movement allowed to the frame is determined by a projection g on the frame which is adapted to engage an adjustable stud Y on the rod 912 connected to frame G. The rod G after raising the frame G to bring the line of types to the level of the galley continues to move upward to raise the galley rule or gate J and allow the'line of types to be moved into the galley. The rule J is mounted to slide on pins y" one carried by the plate D and the other by the rule and the rod G is provided with a projection G3 which engages a lug y'2 on the rule J. During this lat-ter movement the frame G is maintained at its upper position by the engagement of rod G and the compression on the spring gm. For convenience collar gg and projection G3 are constructed as parts of a sleeve detachably secured to the upper end of rod G and co-nstitute in effect a part of said rod.
rlfhe plate E Aacts as a line pusher and is provided with pins e e sliding in bearings on the frame G. It is moved forward relatively to the frame to deliver the line of type into the galley, by a cam E2. A rod E4 capable of moving'longitudinally in suitable bearings is provided with a spring box E3 one end of which bears against the cam, and the other end bears against an adjustable stud e2 mounted on lever E5 which is fulcrumed at e3 and bears against pins e e connected to the column pusher plate E. rIhe lever E5 is returned by a spring E6 and the column pusher is returned bya spring E7. The plate or bar G3 is adjustably secured to frame Z as by being provided with a stem Zw of angular section tted to a socket c 11 on fra-me Z and securedby a setscrew (Z5. The slide extension rZ of frame Z is received in guides in frame cZ2, and said frame Z CZ is adjusted, to accommodate type of different point siZe,by means of a set screw (Z7 in frame (Z2 engaging frame Z the parts after adjustment being held firmly in position by clamping screw ZG in frame Z2 engaging extension CZ. The line support C is carried and guided in a slot in the plate E.
Mounted upon the frame (Z is a lever L carrying at its upper end a rod Z on which is fulcrumed one .end of an adjustable link Z connected at its other end to a latch or trip lever Z2 controlling a clutch or bolt shifting gear on the main driving shaft of the machine. Should a line of types of abnormal length be delivered, then one or more of the end types will pass in front of a sliding piece Z3 mounted in the galley frame, and as the plate E advances these types will move the piece Z3 so that a pin Z4 thereon will bear against the rod Z and thereby operate link Z to actuate the trip and stop the machine in a known manner. The bearing Z5 for the sliding piece Z is adjustably secured to the trame by means of a screw nut Z to allow a sufficient range of adjustment 'for various column widths. The galley proper D has a bar which tits into a slot el in the frame (l. The line hook C is controlled 'trom the signals in the record-strip in the usual manner and so likewise are the cams tor lit'ting the frame G and operating the line pusher E.
The rod or pillar G corresponds in location with the actuating rod for the galley blade or rule of the prior patented machine and when the present attachments are removed it receives said galley blade and operates as heretofore. In the present instance both the rule J and trame G are detachably coupled together' and with this rod or pillar Gr, so as to be readily applied to or removed therefrom, by means of the sleeve to which collar g and projection G3 are applied, said sleeve being contined to the reduced upper end of the rod or pillar by a detachable fastening means, such as a nut. The threaded end of sleeve Gr2 against which spring glo takes its bearing when disengaged from said sleeve permits the withdrawal ot the sleeve containing said collar 0" and projection G3.
