DIVANETTE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed December 8, 1919. Serial No. 785,200.
.This invention .relates to convertible beds and divans, and more particularly to what may be designated .as a convertible divanette, havingba forwardly slidingsection and a swinging ack section, and which structure ma be readily converted into a divan or full length bed by shiftin either. one of said movable sections. T e resent improvement has to do particular y with the means for connecting said back and sliding section whereby the operation of the sec,- tions is facilitated and which means will not be in the way of the bed clothing carried by the sections.
The present improvement consists of a stationary section,
thereto, and a sliding section, the back and sliding sections being connected by means which is always below the said sections in whatever position the structure ma be 1n,
and by organizin the structure in t e mam.
ner shown it wil when opened up, make a full len th bed which may, of course, be of any desired width, as a single, three-quarter, or double bed, so that it is readily usable in Hats and small rooms where it is necessary to economize space, since when made as a full size bed it will take up but four feet of wall space but yet can be opened up to form a full-length bed, which 18 about six feet long. It is essential, however, that in structures of this kind the means which connects the movable sections shall be so located that it will not interfere with the bed clothing, and, therefore, it should be out of the way, and this is one of the features of the present im rovement.
n the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of the structure artly opened; Fig. 2 is a erspective view t ereof in the form of a fu 1 length double bed.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.
i This improved divanette comprises a stationary section 2 and back section 3 hinged a back section hinged' thereto at one side thereof, and a sliding section 5 shiftable into position under the stationary section to form the seat, or forwardly thereof when the back is swung down to form a full length bed. The stationary section 2 and the sliding section 5 ma be made in substantially the same way,
i eac 1 comprising a pair of end frames (3 consisting of cross or transverse bars 7 for sup porting a suitable spring 8 and legs 9. It is, however, only necessary to provide the sliding section with casters. In the present improvement the end frames of each section are connected by suitable sidebars and braces 10, 11, and 12.
The back or back section 3 is hinged to the stationary section 2 at one side thereof and is made up of a-suitable frame work 13 for the attachment-of a suitable spring 14. For supporting this backwhen in its iorlzontal position it is provided with a leg 1.5 at each end pivoted thereto, and each of these le s is connected by a link 18 with one of the egs of the stationary section, the linkage connection being such that on the raising of the back the is s will be folded close to the back and on thedowering ofthe same they will be opened and rest upon the floor to support such. back.
A stuffed mattress a, which may have an ornamental covering on one side which is exosed when the structure is in the form of a ivan, as in Fig. 1, and a tick covering on the opposite side which is exposed when the structure is in the form of a bed, as in Fig. 2, is connected along one edge to a similarly formed stuffed mattress b which forms the mattress for the stationary section, and this mattress b is in turn connected with the stuffed mattress 0 connected to the back, and which likewise may have an ornamental covering.
T e sliding section and back are connected at o posite ends by a lever 16 and a link 17 the atter of which is pivotally connected to the end frames of the slidin section, the lever preferabl being forms as an. extension of the bac frame so that it projects at all times below and under the middle or stationary section. The links are also located below the springs whether the structure be in the form of a divan or a full len h bed, that is, both the lever and its l in at each end of the structure always pro- ]ect toward the floor and therefore away that there is no dangeror'li'abilit' ime .3
bed cl'otliin' being torn or injured 'y'bei'ng' caught in t ese parts as would be the case were these parts so connected that they proected above thesprings. To facilitate the operation of the back suitable helical sprin 20 are connected with the lever 16 and t c Any rear legs of the stationary section. suitable means may be used tomaintain the back inits upright position when pulled from the wall, if for any reason this should be necessary, such, for instance, as a'hook and pin 21 and 22 located at one or both ends of the'structure. The forward movement of the back, of'course, would be prevented by the two mattresses a and b which form the seat, From-the'foregoing it will'be observed that on. pullingout the' forward section or throwing down the back section the other section will be moved to convert the structure either into-a divan or full length bed in a manner which will be readily'understood. This improved linkage connection obviates.
the necessity of forming a slot' in any part of the structure for the movement of one member-thereof, and'the moment the back is started in its'arcof movement the sliding section is immediately shifted without-any lost motion.

2. A divanette comprising a stationary or seat section, a sliding section, and a swinging back section hinged to said stationary section, and means connecting the swinging back section with the sliding section and located below the mattress supporting bottoms of said sections, the connection bein such that on the shiftin of either movab e section the other will Ee shifted.
3.
