UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHNW. STEPHENSON AND LOREN :8. WILSON, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE NATIONAL MALLEABLE CASTINGS COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORA- TION OF OHIO.
JOURNAL-BOX.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN T. STEPHEN- SON and LOREN B. l/VILSON, residents of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing one form of box embodying our invention, and also showing a special lid opening tool applied to the box lid; and Fig. 2 :is an end view of the box and its lid.
Our invention has relation to journal boxes, and is designed to provide a journal box having its lid so constructed and arranged that it can not be opened without the use of a special tool. As ordinarily constructed, journal box lids can be opened by hand or by the use of ordinary tools; and by reason of this fact there has been a great deal of trouble due to the journal box brasses being stolen. Trouble has also arisen by reason of the fact that the waste, with which the boxes are filled, is also sometimes stolen. Our invention overcomes this difficulty, in that itprovides a journal box having a lid which cannot be opened except by the use of a special tool.
In the accompanying drawings, the
numeral 2 designates a journal box which may be, in general, of any approved type.
The numeral 3 designates the hinged or pivoted lid having the hood portion l, and 5 is the spring for retaining the lid closed. In accordance with our invention, the end of the box is provided with a rib or flange (S which extends around the sides and bottom of the end opening of the box which is closed by the lid; and the lateral and bottom edges of the lid are made to seat flush within this rib. There is, therefore, no extending portion of the lid below the bottom edge of the mouth of the box which can be taken hold of, either by a tool or by hand, for the purpose of opening the lid. In order to open the lid a special tool is required, such as that shown at 7 in Fig. 1. This tool is provided with a curved fulcrum end por- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion 8, which fulcrums on the bent hood 4; and also has a specially shaped finger 9 which is arranged to engage an opening 10 at the bottom of the spring slot of the lid.
It will be obvious that our invention is adaptable to various forms of journal boxes and lids and that the lids may be constructed in various ways provided that, in each case, a specially formed tool is needed for engagement therewith to eil'ect the opening thereof.
IV hat we claim is:
1. A journal box having a lid hinged thereto at one of its edges, the other three edges of the lid being guarded by the walls of the opening covered by said lid to protect them from direct lifting engagement, and spring mechanism for holding the lid in engagement with the box, the lid having a recess therein for receiving a projection of a lid raising lever, and also having a bearing portion for said lever; substantially as described.
2. A journal box having a lid hinged at one of its edges, the box having guard portions protecting the other edges from direct lifting engagement therewith, a spring mechanism arranged to hold the lid in closed position, there being a recess in the lid, said recess being shaped and arranged so that one of its walls will form a seat for a special opening tool having two seating portions; substantially as described.
3. A journal box having a lid hinged at one edge, the box having portions along the other edges arranged to cover and protect them from direct lifting engagement, and spring mechanism arranged to hold the lid yieldingly in closed position, the lid having a fulcrum portion and an'engaging portion for a lid lifting lever which has two lid engaging portions; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands.
JOHN IV. STEPHENSON. LOREN B. \VILSON.
