UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN J. VIGKERS, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
ACCOUNT-FILE.
Application filed June 6, 1911, Serial No. 631,641.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. VIOKERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Account-File, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in account files, the primary object of the invention being the provision of an account file of the character shown in U. S. Letters Patent Nos. 881,363 and 992,299, having in addition to the radially disposed file trays, and an extractor for engaging and moving any chosen one of said trays, a locking device to prevent the rotation of the trays during the extraction of one, and the extraction of a tray during the rotation of said trays. In this particular case a rotatable series of holding members or trays is retained, the construction of the trays being identical to the construction as set forth in said Patent No. 992,299 referred to above, with the extractor mechanism for engaging and moving any chosen one of the trays radially, this particular invention being an addition thereto and providing a means, or locking device to prevent the rotation of the trays during the extraction of any of them, or the extraction of a tray during the rotation of the drum or all of the trays. As the interior construction of the present device is identical with that shown in the latter patent, it is not thought necessary to refer in detail to the drum carrying the series of radial trays.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wooden base separated from the account file casing by avfire resisting element, and with a removable fire proof or fire protecting hood for the casing.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device, the hood thereon being shown in section, and a portion of the casing being broken away to show the tray operating mechanism. Fig.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Renewed September 6, 1912. Serial No. 719,007.
2 is a front elevation of the same with the hood broken away in transverse section, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the account file casing, with a portion broken away, to show the locking mechanism for the rotating radial file trays and also for the tray extracting mechanism. Fig. skis a side elevation of the said locking mechanism in an enlarged detailed construction. Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the wooden base of the machine, which is provided with a bottom section 2 and a top plate or section 3, the forward portion of the said base being provided with a series of ren'iovable drawers or compartments 4.
Mounted upon the top plate of the casing is a sheet of asbestos 5, which has mounted thereon a steel plate 6, thus providing a fire resisting medium between the wooden supporting portion 1 and the account file casing 11. This steel plate is secured by means of the locking lugs 8 and 9, to the top of the wooden portion 1.
Adapted to fit upon the steel plate 6 and, form a fire resisting or protecting casing or hood for the casing 11, is a metal hood 10. This hood 10 is adapted to be used when the machine is out of use, during the night or rest period.
The file account casing is constructed similar to the casing set forth in Patent No. 992,299 above referred to, and has the shaft 12 carrying the drum A, which as in said patent is provided with a series of radially disposed arms, carrying each a tray as set forth in said patent, a detailed construction of which will not be referred to in this application as the particular invention herein has relation to means for locking the drum against rotation during the extraction of any one of the trays or the extraction of a single tray during the rotation of the drum.
The drum A is rotated by means of a gear wheel 2 1, engaged by pinion 25 and shaft 26 extending to the exterior of the casing carried by a disk 27, and a manipulating arm 28 is provided, and between this arm and disk is a double ended pointer, points 29-30 being provided.
The disk 27 turns in an annular frame 31 on which is displayed a circular index 32, and this frame 31 is in turn mounted on a support 32, having a peripheral series of notches 33 underriding the frame or ring 31. i
The arm 28 terminates at each end in a hinged handle 3435, respectively, and each handle is provided with a tooth 36, adapted when the handle is in alinement with. the arm 28, to engage in a notch 33 thereby looking the arm 28 in position. On lifting the handle 34t-35 to a position at approximately right angles to the length of the arm 18, the teeth 26 are carried out of engagement with the notches 23 and the arms 28 may then be rotated to cause a like rotation of the shaft 26 and through this shaft and the pinion 25 and gear wheel 24 imparts a rotating movement to the drum A, and the series of trays 16 carried thereby, the hands 29 and 30 participating in this movement.
The number of trays 16 on the cylinder or drum A, and the index markings on the index 82, have a definite relation, and when the two series of trays are used the inner and outer indices will be used for the respective series of trays.
Mounted on the casing 11 is a drum 37 within a protecting casing 38 and capable of rotative movement through knobs 29. The casing ,38 may have a glass panel 40 through which the cylinder 37 may be readily observed. The said cylinder being designed to serve simply as an index needs no further description.
This much of the invention as relatestothe tray extractor and the trays, is covered by applicants Patent No. 992,299, the additional portion of the invention, being the means for locking the said extractor while the drum A is rotating, and for locking the drum A against rotation, while the extractor is extracting a single tray. This means consists primarily in providing the disk of the rotating member A with a series of serrations or teeth 50 upon its periphery, and providing a notch 51 in the upper portion of the extractor, and by means of the locking member as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the notch 51 is engaged when the teeth 50 are not engaged, and vice versa, as will presently appear.
The locking device consists of the frame 52, having slidingly mounted therein the bolts or locks 53, having the pull out knob 54; and the engaging end 55, which is adapted to engage the teeth 50 of the disk of the drum A. Mounted for parallel movement in the casing 52 is a sliding pin 67, whose outer end is provided with a knob 67 and which is adapted to be receded when the knob 54: is projected, and vice versa. Depending from the under side of the frame 52 is an arm 56, in which is pivotally mounted by means of the stud or shaft 57, the pivoted locking means 58, provided with thehooked end 59, which is adapted to engage the notch or recess 51 in the extractor, andto operate the said looking member 58, a link 66 is pivotally con- 'nected through the means of a screw 65, to
the inner end of the slidably mounted stud or rod 67.
Connected centrally of the frame 52 to the stud 61 by means of the pivoting screw 60, is a double ended lever 62 whose end at 63 is connected to the slidable rod 67, while its other end 64 is connected to the drum look ing lug or rod 53, this providing a means whereby when the head 54 is pushed upon, the lock 55 is pushed in, and the rod 67 is projected as clearly shown in Fig. 5. When the head 67 is pushed upon, exactly reverse operation takes place, the detent 55 is removed from engagement with the teeth 50 of the drum, and the locking device 58 has its hook 59 thrown down to and in engagement with the lock or notch 51 of the extractor. that the drum is locked against rotation while the extractor is extracting a tray, and vice versa, that is the extractor is locked against movement while the trays are being rotated.
In order to hold the locking plungers 53 and 67 in the desired position, an arm 68 is provided upon the double ended lever 62,
and a spring 0 is connected thereto and to the main casing 52, thus holding said lever in the desired inclined position, or in either position where the lug 69 is out of the direct center line. By this means it will be seen that it is impossible to rotate the drum While the tray is being extracted, and vice versa, that it is impossible to operate the extractor while the drum is being rotatedi hat is claimed is: 1. An account file,'having a rotatablevseries of radially disposed file trays, each slidably mounted to move radially, an extractor for engaging and moving any chosenone of said trays radially, and means for locking: the extractor against movement during the rotation of the trays and for locking the trays against rotation while the extractor is operated.
2. An account file, having a rotatable series of radially disposed trays, each mov- 1. able radially, an extractor for the trayslalso movable radially with relation to theaxis of rotation, said extractor being provided with engaging means movable at will into locking engagement with any chosen one of the trays, and means for locking the extractor against movement during the rotation of the trays.
3. An account file, having a series of rotatable trays supported between drums, one
of said drums being provided with a series of peripheral teeth, an extractor adapted to extract one tray at a time when the-drum is stationary, and a locking means adapted to engage the teeth of the drum for locking the .drum against rotation while the tray is being extracted and locking the trays against rotation while the extractor is operated...
By this means it willbe seen 4. An account file comprising a series of rotatable trays adapted to have radial movement, an extractor for extracting one tray at a time, a pair of locking members,.one
for the extractor and one for the series of trays, and means for actuating said locking members, whereby when the extractor is locked by its locking member, the trays are free to rotate, and when the trays are locked by their locking member the extractor is free to operate.
5. An account file, comprising a drum one head of which is provided with a series of peripheral teeth, a series of trays radially slidable and mounted in said drum, an ex tractor for extracting a single tray at a time, a lock for the drum and one for the extractor, and means connecting said locks whereby when one is operated the other is thrown out, and vice versa.
6. An account file, having a casing, a drum rotatably mounted therein and having one end provided with a series of peripheral teeth, a series of trays radially mounted in said drum and adapted to slide individually beyond the periphery thereof, a plunger extracting device mounted to extract a single tray at a time while the drum is stationary, said plunger being provided with a notch, a locking device adapted to engage the notch of the plunger when the drum is rotating, another locking device adapted to engage the teeth of the disk of the drum when the extractor is extracting a tray, and means for connecting the said locking members whereby one is manipulated by the operation of the other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto a'iiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
