BALL-CARRIER AND GAME-REGISTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. PowELL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a cer tain new and useful Ball-Carrier and Game- Register, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to a registering device for pool games and has for its object primarily to prevent the removal of the triangle, and the balls within the same, from the carrier without indicating such removal on the register.
With this and other objects in view, this invention consists of the features, details of construction, and combination of parts described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view showing the carrier and the locking and registering mechanism for the triangle. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing the enlarging glass through which the registration on the indicator may be read. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device showing the cut away portion in the bottom of the carrier. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the locking and register operating mechanism, and the bell. The front side of the support for the mechanism has been omitted. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on lines X X of Fig. 4, showing the lock, and the mechanism for controlling the lock, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail of the tongue and the lip for operating the bell.
The invention comprises a support of triangular shape, having a bottom 1, and side walls 2 and 3, such support forming a carrier for a triangle 4 and the balls 5 used in the game. Said support is provided with a boxing 6, in which is housed a frame, consisting of two spaced plates 7 and 8, such frame being fastened to one wall ofthe boxing by bolts 9. A latch bolt 10 extends through an opening in the plate 7 and one side of the boxing, and is arranged to en gage a latch chamber 11 provided in one side of the triangle 4. Said latch bolt 10 is held projected in the latch chamber 11 by a spring 12 coiled about the shank 13 thereof, which is normally housed in a boss 14 on plate 8 of the frame. Said latch bolt 10 is rabbeted to receive the peripheral edge of a cam disk 14, by means of which the latch Specification of Letters Patent.

bolt is controlled. Said cam disk is mounted on a shaft 15, on to which it is fastened by a set screw 16 extending through a hub 17 integral with said disk. A bell 18 is fastened on said hub 17, by screws 19. Mounted on said shaft 15, is the hub 20 of a finger 21, to the end of which is pivotally fastened a tongue 22. This tongue is held normally in contact with the upper face of said finger 21 by a spring 23, such tongue being movable relatively to said finger when moved in one direction, as will appear more fully hereinafter. The shaft 15, on which the cam disk 14, bell 18 and finger 21 are mounted, is normally under the tension of a spring 24, one end of which is fastened to the hub 20 of the finger 21, while its outer end is fastened in the plate 8 of the frame. In this manner the cam disk is held normally in the position illustrated in Fig. 4, the cam portion of the disk being out of engagement with the rabbet of the latch bolt 10, which is in engagement with the latch chamber 11 of the triangle.
A stop 25 provided on the cam disk periphcry, and alternately engaging the lugs 26 and 27 on the plate7 of the frame,prevents greater rotation of the disk than the two lugs will admit of. The oscillation of the shaft 15, by a key fitting the squared end 28 of the shaft, causes the cam disk 14 to be moved away from the lug 26, and the cam face engaging the rabbet of the latch bolt with draws the bolt from the latch chamber 11 of the triangle. Such movement of the cam disk, as is obvious, occurs against the tension of the spring 24, and immediately upon the release of the key, the shaft and its complementary parts are forced to normal position, leaving the latch bolt projected through the openings in the plate 7 and wall of the boxing.
On an arbor 29, fastened on the plate 8 of the frame, is a sleeve 30, provided with a leaf spring 31, on to the end of which is fastened a hammer or knob 32, which is in direct alinementwith the aforementioned bell 18. Said sleeve 30 is also provided with a pin 33, which is held in engagement with a stud 34 by a spring 35. Said pin 33 is in the direct path of travel of the tongue 22 fastened on to end of the finger 21. Consequently when the shaft is oscillated by means of the key, the tongue 22 engages the pin 33, raising it away from the stud 84. The continued movement of the shaft causes the tongue to slip engagement with said pin 33, which thereupon suddenly returns to normal position, causing the leaf snring 31 to yield to the shock and the hammer carried by the end thereof to strike the bell 1S. YVhen the key is released, and the finger 21 returns to normal position, the tongue 22 striking against the pin 33 is raised relatively to the finger 21, and thereby glides past said pin to original position.
On the cam disk let is pivoted a pawl 36, held normally against a stop pin 37, by a spring 88. Said pawl is arranged to engage a ratchet 39 when the cam disk ll is oscillated, such ratchet serving to govern the registration on the register 40. The operation of the ratchet 39 occurs slightly in advance of the withdrawal of the latch bolt 10, thus absolutely preventing the removal of the triangle at from the support before the register has been actuated. On the return movement of the cam disk 14: to normal position the pawl 36 glides over the ratchet 39, which is held stationary against movement in the reverse direction by a dog l1, pivotally mounted on the plate 7 of the pawl, and held in contact with said ratchet by a spring As seen in Fig. 1, the bottom 1 of the support, is provided, centrally of the outside edge thereof, with an opening d3 of a size slightly smaller than the diameter of one of the balls. When the front wall of the tri angle is parallel with the edge of the bottom, the opening 4-3 is too small to permit passage therethrough of one of the balls. lVhen the wall of the triangle is in such parallel position, the latch bolt 10 is in engagement with the latch chamber 11 of the triangle, and removal of the latter with the balls is impossible until the lock has been withdrawn, which action causes the register to be operated. Unless such wall of the triangle is in parallel alinement with the edge of the bottom 1, the balls will drop through the opening, consequently dishonesty in registering the number of games played is guarded against.
The support is provided with a handle A by which it is carried. The triangle used to bunch the balls, is inserted in the triangular support, as shown in Fig. l, the lock 10 engaging the latch chamber 11, to hold the same in place and against removal. Vhen the triangle is thus locked, the support is taken to the rack, in which the balls have been placed by the players, and the balls deposited in the triangle. Before the triangle can be removed from the carrier or support, the lock must be withdrawn from the latch chamber, such withdrawal of the lock causing the register to be operated, as described. Since the triangle is necessary to bunch the balls, and. in this device, the carrier cannot be used without the triangle in place, it is obvious that each use of the triangle will be indicated on the register.
hat I claim is- 1. A device comprising a triangular carrier for a plurality of balls, a triangle fitting in said carrier to prevent the balls from falling out, means to lock said triangle in said carrier, means to control said lock to release said triangle from said carrier, and means to register the number of times said triangle is removed from said carrier.
2. A device comprising a triangular carrier for a plurality of balls, a triangle arranged to fit in said carrier, said triangle having in one side thereof a latch chamber, a lock engaging said latch chamber to lock said triangle in said carrier, means to control said lock to release said triangle from said carrier, and a mechanism cooperating withand controllable by said lock controlling means to register the number of times said triangle has been removed from said carrier.
3. A device comprising a. triangular ball carrier having a cut-outportion of a size su'ilicient for the passage of a ball therethrough, a triangle arranged to fit in and be carried with the balls by said carrier, said tria'ngle being provided in one side thereof with alatch chamber, a bolt engaging said latch chamber to lock said triangle in said carrier, one side of said triangle serving to constrict the cut-out portion in said carrier when locked therein, to prevent the passage of a ball therethrough, a means to operate said bolt to withdraw same from the latch chamber of said triangle, and a registering mechanism cooperating with and controllable by said operating means.

A device comprising a support for a plurality of balls, said support having a cut-away portion, a triangle fitting in said support, and arranged to close one side of said cut-away portion to prevent the ball therein from falling out, a means to lock said triangle in said support, means to control said lock, and means to register the number of times said lock has been operated.
