ROLL-RAMMING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY P. MACDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Montclair, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll Ramming Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference to sand mold apparatus, particularly to the roll ramming type of mechanism, wherein the sand is rammed or packed by passing a heavy roll over the sand in the flask. The chief objects of the invention are: the provision of a roll ramming mechanism having improved I means for controlling the movement of the roll, and the provision in a roll ramming mechanism of improved cooperating control and buffer means. These together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incidental to my invention I attain by means of a construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. l is a plan view of a roll ramming machine embodying my improved features, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1,-

Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that in carrying out my invention I employ a roll 7 carrying a frame work 8 which is provided with a rack 9 driven by the shaft 10 through a pinion 11. The roll 7 is guttered or grooved at each end and rides on the angle iron tracks 12, the grooves engaging the upright flange or leg of the angles. The shaft 10 is driven by the motor 13, gearing 14c, shaft 15, and gearing 16, all of the driving mechanism being mounted in the carriage or frame work 17. The rack 9 is carried directly on the pinion 11 and is maintained in the proper position by means of the rollers 18 which are mounted in the frame 18 car ried on the shaft 10. (See Figs. 1 and 5). By means of this mechanism the roll 7 is reciprocated and passes back and forth over the flask l9 diagrammatically indicated at the left hand end of Fig. 2.
For controlling the movement of the roll 7, I have provided an automatic mechanism for reversing the motor 13 through its controller 20 which may be of any preferred form.
Referring particularly to Figures 3 and 4:, it will be noted that a portion of the end of the driving shaft 10 is screw threaded, and is provided with two nuts 21 and 22 which are rigidly secured to the shaft and constitute fixed abutments. Mounted on the threaded portion of the shaft between the abutments and having threaded engagement with such portion is a floating member 23 which is held against rotative movement by means of the rods 24 which have sliding engagement with a pulley or sheave loosely mounted on the shaft 10 and connected to the arm or shaft 26 of the controller 20 by the flexible connection 27 which comprises a pair of straps preferably composed of leather or other suitable material. The operation of the reversing mechanism is as follows. As the shaft 10 rotates in a direction to' drive the roll forward, the floating member 23 moves longitudinally on the shaft until it contacts with the spring 28 on the abutment 21. Spring 28 looks the floating member which'then rotates with the shaft 10 and turns the controller arm 26 by means of the pulley 25 and connection 27. This movement reverses the motor and the shaft 10 rotates in the opposite direct-ion, the floating member 23 being moved away from the abutment 21 toward the abutment 22. The abutment 22 is also provided with a spring 28' and when the floating member contacts with this spring the operation above described again occurs, but in the reverse direction, and the controller arm is shifted to shut off the motor, all parts being then in initial position.
In order to relieve the motor and driving connections from the excessive strain incident to the reversal of the movement of the roll 7, which is of considerable weight, I have provided spring buffers 29 and 30 which are mounted on the carriage 17. The rack is provided with abutments 81, one at each end, which are adapted to take against the buffers at the end of the travel of the roll in either direction. The buffers are being compressed at substantially the same time as the motor is being reversed and they thus take the strain of the reversal from the motor and assist in the initial movement of the roll in the reverse direction.
As a means for stopping the motor at any time independently of the automatic reverse mechanism I have provided a means for turning the pulley 25 by hand. This comprises pulley 32 which is mounted on the brackets 33 and the cable 34: which passes around both pulleys and is moved by means of the rod 35. Other advantages will occur to those familiar with the art.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following:
1. In a roll ramming molding apparatus the combination of a roll, means for reciproeating the roll, a motor for operating the reciprocating means, means for automatically reversing the motor when the roll reaches extremes of movement, and yielding means for stopping the roll adjacent the extremes of movement when the motor is re versed.
2. In a roll ramming molding apparatus the combination of a roll, means for reciprocating the roll, a motor for operating the reciprocating means, means for automatically reversing the motor, and yielding means for stopping the movement of the roll and giving it an initial impulse on its reverse movement when the motor is reversed.

eating the roll, a motor for operating the reciprocating means, means for automatically reversing the motor when the roll reaches a predetermined point in its movement, and a positive means for stopping the roll adjacent such point.
4. In roll ramming molding apparatus the combination of a roll, means for reciprocating the roll, a motor for operating the reciprocating means, means for automatically reversing the motor when the roll reaches a predetermined point in its movement, and a positive yielding means for stopping the roll adjacent such point.
5. In roll ramming mold apparatus the combination of a roll, means for reciprocating the roll, a' motor for operating the reciprocating means, means for automatically reversing the motor when the roll reaches one extreme of movement, means for stopping the motor when the roll reaches the other extreme of movement, and positive means for stopping the roll adjacent to either extreme of movement when the motor is reversed, or stopped.
