GOMBNED TIE PLATE A H. WNSWORTHf ND BML ANCHOR.
femm) JUNE 24,1912.
PPLIATION Specification of Lette-:K5 Patent.
Y inni,
Application filed June 2%, 15112. Seidel No. .'l',
To all 'whom may; concem:
Be it known that L il/*11min E. illinowoii'lxi, a citizen oi? the Unified Staten, *realtiing at Youngstown, Unio? naw-a invented o certain new sind useful linpi'ovenient in Combined Tie-Plates und Rail-flnoliois, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact nesmiplion, sncli tis will eninle others Skilled in the art to which it nppeitnins lo malte and use the/saine This invention relates to tie plates.
@ne object of the invention is to 'provide :i tie plate o novel construction that' will @lef-,tively `pseven longitudinal @teenage movement of ai mil in either diiection.
notlie object is to pro ticle n coniloinenl tie plate and rail anchor 'that also operates to'bmce the rail against lateral strains and "time prevents the mils oa track from Spieading..
Another object is to provide a combined ie plate und mil anchor comprising a milgripping member 'liat is wedged tightly be! tween' the head sind the base flange of the rail and which is combined with the railsiippoiting member of the device in such a manner that itv etlectively prevents longitudinal ereepage of the i'ail Without niclting oi' inutilnting the mil. And Still another object is io p'ovitle an inexpensive tleviwe embodying the characteristics nove-inentioned that can be applied and removed easily. I
`ligure l of the drawings is n cross set tion-Lil View of :i ruil showing one of luy inipiovecl combined tie plates and ruil :inclioie airnngetl in operative position; Fig is n eide elevational view of the ruil and snitl tie vice; und Fig. 3 is n top plan View.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the pi'efeietl foi-in' of in v im'ention, A designates an ordinary "lf-rail tlnit rests upon ai tie B.'
My combined tie plate :mtl nail anolioi or :intl-creeping device consists of :i mil-A` Supporting' member C tlinf interposed lie* tween the linen flange ol" the ruil :intl the tie AB, :intl n rail-gripping ineinlioi' l) tlmt is wedged tightly between tlie lieutl and the nase Hnge of 'the `all :intl 'which coperaties with portions on salti mil-Supporting ineinbei' C so :1S/to prevent ille ruil 'fiolii moving or creepinglongitudinally in @itl-ier diret tion. Various means may be employed for pre- ,.'venting the-lower end portion of the rail' grippino member Drrom moving vertically out of tde ocket formed by the' upwardly projecting lugs 5 on the reil-supporting member C., l prefer, however, to use a spike 2 for this pur/pose7 as shown in Fig. l, the spike passing through an opening 1a in the rail-supporting member@ which is so located that the head of the spike will lap over the laterally projectin ortion of the raibgripping member fl. I? esired, an upwardly projectin spike brace Il may be formed on the mem er C adjacent the spike opening l so as to reinforce and strengthen the spilrear After the rail-supporting member C has been arranged in operative position between the rail and the tie the rail is raised slight-ly and the rail-gripping member D is then wedged tightly between the head and the base flange of the rail. Thereafter, the rail is lowered onto the rail-supporting member C, thus causing the de ending lange 9 on the rail-gripping mem er to project into the pocket formed oy the upwardly proW jectin lugs 5 on the rail-supporting memfinally, the spike 2 is inserted so as to lock the raibgripping member D in operative position. To release the rail the opera-y tions above-mentioned are reversed.
A device of the construction above de scribed can be manufactured cheaply owing to the simple design of same and to the fact that no machine-work is required in produc- `ing the device, and it can be applied and removed easily. lt not only forms e Very efficient tie plate that reinforces and strengthens the tie spikes against the lateral strains to which the are subjected when in service but it also e 'ectively revents longitudinal creepage of the raii m 'either direction owing to the fact that it comprises a rail-gripping member that is' wedged tightly between the under side of the. head andthe to face of the base flange of the rail, n a dition to .its raileupporting and anti-creeping functionssuch a device also securely braces the head of the rail against vrail-gripping nieinlmr nav'ing e w iiooogifee lateral strains 'and thus prevents the rails iange of the rail and having a rigid por-- tion that lits loosely in said pocket, and a fastening device for securing both of said members to the tie on which the device is mounted. *l
2. A; combined tie Qlate and rail anchor comprising e rail-supporting member on which the rail rests, an open pocket on .seid member having .oppositelyrr inclined wells which fits between the head and the flange of the rail but does not engage the web of the rail, a rigid device on. said rail-gripping member that ts in said pocket for prevent` ing relative longitudinal movement of same,
and means for locking said raibgripping member in operative position.
3. A combinedvtie plate and rail anchor comprising a reil-snpporting member on which the rail rests; a raibgripping member having a wedgewhaped portion that is. adaptedto bewedgcd between the head and the `base flange of the rail and provided with .a rigid laterally projecting portion, a depending flange on said laterally projecting vportion extending along one edge of the base flange of the rail and having oppositely inclined surfaces, and upwardly projecting lugs -on said rail-supporting member that cooperate with said opjpositely inclined surfaces to prevent longitudinal movement of the rail.
In-testimony whereof l hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence ol two witnesses, this 11th day of June 1912.
