HOLDER FOR END-GATES.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscoda, in the county of Grant and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for End- Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to end gate holders for a wagon box or hog rack, and has for its purpose to provide a device of that character which will take the place of the ordinary rod, and which is adjustable to the end that it may be readily applied to hog racks or wagon boxes of different size.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide an article of the character in question which is secured through the medium of the lever mechanism, and which may be applied in position or removed therefrom in considerably less time than is nec essary in placing or removing the ordinary rod now employed.
The invention further purposes a construction which will be neat in appearance, one which will stand unusually hard wear, and which will be cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter claimed, and, while the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still, for the purpose of disclosure, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing its manner of application; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof showing the lever released; Fig. 8 is a top plan View showing the lever secured; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the connecting rods.
Referring to the construction in further detail, the same consists of two rods or bars 1 and 2 whose opposed ends are provided with hooks 3 and 4 that receive angle pieces or clamping members 5 and 6 that are adapted to engage with the sides A and B of the hog rack or wagon box after that manner illustrated in Fig. 1. Each of the mem bers 5 and 6 is provided with a perforation 7 whereby said-members may be secured to the sides A and B through the medium of a nail, screw or the like.
The adjacent ends of the bars 1 and 2 are Specification of Letters Patent.

connected through the medium of an adjustable lever mechanism comprising a lever 8 pivotally mounted on a bolt 9 that is secured within apertures 10 on the bifurcated portion 11 of the bar 2 (see especially Fig.
The lever 8 is also provided with apertures 12 whereby said lever may have its fulcrum point changed to obtain greater or less leverage accordingly as desired. The bolt 9 may be fitted into any registering pair of apertures 10 of the bar 2 whereby to adjust the bars 1 and 2 for fitting various sized wagon boxes or hog troughs as will be ap parent.
The lever 8 is constructed with an angularly extended portion 13 that connects with the hooked end 14 of the bar 1 through the medium of a link 15. The free end 16 of the lever 8 is hooked whereby to engage with the staple or ring 17 that is pivotally secured at 18 to the bar 1 after that manner indicated in the several views.
To apply the device in position, it is necessary only that the bars 1 and 2 be adjusted with respect to the distance between the members A and B when the angle end pieces 5 and 6 are secured thereon. The bars 1 and 2 are then drawn together for clamping the sides A and B against the end gate C by swinging the lever 8 to the position shown in Fig. 1 when the hooked end 16 is engaged by the staple 17 and the parts are then secured. To release the device, it is necessary only that the lever 8 be sufficiently depressed to permit of the disengagement of the staple 17 when said lever 8 may be swung into that position indicated in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by U. S. Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of bars, one of said bars having the opposite endsthereof constructed with hooks, the other of said bars having the outer end thereof constructed with a hook and the inner end thereof constructed with a bifurcated portion, and said bifurcated portion provided with a plurality of registerin apertures; an adjustable lever fulcrumed within the bifurcated portion of said bar having a hooked end and provided with an angularly extending portion; a link connecting the extended portion of said 1e- Ver with the adjacent hooked end of the first-named bar; a pair of angular clamping members loosely connected with the outer hooked ends of said bars and adapted to engage with the sides of a wagon; and a staple pivotally mounted on said first-named bar and adapted to engage with the hooked end 10 of said lever and hold the same in secured position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
