UMBRELLA CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 17, 1912. Serial No. 691,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMAN E. SCHULTZ, J r., and FRANK WETTEROTH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Umbrella Construction, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to inake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to the construction of umbrellas and has for its object the provision of simple and effective means for securing the cloth of the cover to the tip of the umbrella rib. v
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate two forms of umbrellas made in accordance with our invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, on a reduced scale, of a portion of our preferred form of umbrella; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view of one of the umbrella tips and fastening member, the fasteni'ig member being partially open; Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views taken at right angles to'Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4,
. but showing a slight modification.
Like marks of reference refer to similar parts in the several views of the drawings.
10 represents the umbrella rib and 11 the tip. These two parts may be integral, but we prefer to form tip 11 separately and to secure it to the rib 10 by inserting the said rib in a socket 12 formed in the inner end of the tip 11. Formed in the tip 11 are a pair of circumferential ooves 13 and 14 respec- The portion between these two grooves 13 and 14 is preferably provided with rounded shoulder 15, while the forward and rear shoulders 16 and 17 are made square, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Surrounding the tip 11 is a clamping member 18,
which is split, as shown in Fig. 3.
19 represents the cloth of the cover. A
portion of this cloth- 19 is inserted between the tip 11 and clamping member 18 and the ends of the latter are brought together so as to firmly clamp the cloth between the two parts. The cloth is inserted between the two parts from the outer end and the body of the cloth is folded back over the clamping member so that-the tension of the cloth tends to force the clamping member against the outer rounded shoulder 15 and the square shoulder 17 so that the tension of the cloth increases the clamping effect and, at the same time, the square shoulders 16 and '17 assist in preventing tipping and consequent spreading of the clamping member, the tendency to tip being'due to the fact that the strain falls on only a side of this member.
- In Fig. 6, we have shown a modification in which the single clamping member 18 is replaced by a pair of clamping rings 20, one being placed in each of the grooves 13 and 14. In this construction, the action of the,
parts is substantially the .same, except, of course, that the inner ring 20 will not be forced against the shoulder 17 by'the tension of the cloth, age or spreading of the outer ring 20, in which' case the inner ring will hold the cloth in position.
Having fully described our invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination-with the tip of an umbrella rib, of a clamping member, said tip being provided with a shoulder arranged at the inner end of said clamping member and cooperating therewith, and a cover having a portion inserted between said tip and clamping member,;the body of said cover being foldedback over the clamping member.
2. The combination with the rib of an umbrella, of a removable tip therefor provided with a clamping surface, of a clamping member movable relatively to said tip Patented Mag 6,1913.
except in case of a breakand cooperating therewith, and a cover having a portion inserted between said tip and clamping member, the body of said cover being folded back over the clamping member.
3. The combination with the tip of an I umbrella rib, said tip being provided with a circumferential groove, of a clamping member situated in said groove, and a cover having a portion inserted from the outer endbetween said ,tip and clamping member, the body of said cover being folded back over the clamping member.
4. The combination with the tip of an umbrella rib, said tip being provided 'with a pair of circumferential grooves, of clamping means situated in said grooves, and a cover havingv a portion inserted from the,
outer end between 'said tip and clamping means, the body of said cover being folded back over the clamping means.
5. The combination with the tip of an umbrella rib, said tip being provided with a pair of circumferential grooves, of a clamping member provided with a pair of internal projections situated in said grooves, and a cover clamped between said member and tip. 6. The combination with the tip of an umbrella rib, said tip being provided with a pair of circumferential grooves, of ;a clamping member provided with a pair of internal projections situated in said grooves, and a cover having a portion inserted from the outer end between said tip and clamping member, the body of said cover being folded back over the clamping member.
In testimony whereof, we have' set our hands and aflixed our seals in-the presence of thetwo subscribing witnesses.
