TAG-LINE CLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.'
Patented May 6, 1913.
Application filed September 3, 1912. Serial No. 718,312.
' such as used in loggin the principal object of the invention being to provide a clevis,
the parts of which are connected by a single pm which, while the parts are in activepositions, isheld against longitudinal displacement so that it becomes impossible for the parts of the clevis to become detached from each other. v
A further object is to provide a clevis the parts of which can so that newlines can whenever desired.
A further object is to provide a clevis of this character which .is so constructed as to be capable of passing through the bull block without becoming strained.
A further object is to provide a clevis which will prevent main and tag lines from becoming entangled.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com-- bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter .described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within thescope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit! of the invention.
In the accompanylng drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a plan section. and partly in elevation of t e parts of the clevis separated.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a U-shaped clevis member having eyes at the ends thereof, as shown at 2, the inner faces of said eyes being recessed or cut-away as shown at 3 so as to receive eyes 4 formed at the ends of another U-shaped clevis member 5. One of the eyes '2 has a keyway 6 therein while one of the eyes 4 is also provided with a keyway 7. A collar 8 is adapted to be fitted between the eyes 4 and has -a keyway 9 therein. L This collar is formed with a stem 10 provided, at its free end, with an eye 11 adapted to be be readily separatedbe inserted thereinto artly in tion, however, .the few parts embodied in its construction connected to the haul-back swivel of the logging apparatus.
The coupling pin, which has been shown at 12, is inserted into the eyes 2, and 4 and into the collar 8 and is provided, at its center, w1th .a key or feather 12, the length of which is equal to the length of the keyway 9.
It is to be understood that the eyes 2 and 4 always register with each other and with theopening'in the collar 8. By turning the members 1 and 5 out of their normal positions, the keyways 6 and -7 can be brought into register with the keyway 9. When the parts are thus located, the pin 12 can be inserted into the registering openings and key or feather 12' passed through the keyways 6 and 7 and into the keyway 9. By then swinging theclevis members 1 and 5 relative to the collar 8, the keyways 6 and 7 can be shifted out of register with the keyway 9 so as thus prevent withdrawal of the pin 12. .A main line can be extended through one of the clevis members and a tag line through the other clevis member while the haul-back swivel is adapted tofbe connected to the eye 11. It will be seen that clevis members can be quickly detached by shifting them so as to bring the keyways 6 and. 7 into register with the keyway 9 whereupon the pin 12 can be withdrawn. Under normal conditions, howeveryas when the clevis is in use, these keyways are out of register and it thus becomes impossible f0; tlile pin 12 to drop out of place.
t as
been found in actual practice that i a clevis such as-herein described is of conof connection which consists of a heavy plate having three openings therein, one in each end and one in the center, each opening receiving a clevis for engagement by one of the lines. This old arrangement results in the lines becoming quickly entangled and, by .reason of the increased number of parts necessary,- the device soon gets out of order. The device constituting the present inven is advantageous because of and because of the further fact that it becomes impossible for these parts to become separated as long asthe clevis-is in use.
What is claimed is A clevis including opposed members each having terminal eyes, the, eyes of one member lapping the eyes of the other member,
a collar insertible between said eyes, one eye of each member having a keyway and there being a keyway in the collar, all 'of said keyways being adapted to register when the clevis members and collar are out.of normal position relative to each other, and a pin seated in the eyes and collar and having a key insertible through the keyways in the eyes and adapted to be seated inthe l0 keyway in the collar, the'length of said key being equal to the length of the key- Way in the collar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
