Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,067, dated August 2, 1870.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST LIEsoHE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Step-Ladder and Chair Combined and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of my invention when closed, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same when open or unfolded.

This invention relates to an improved stepladder and chair that is so constructed as to be used as an ordinary chair when folded up, as hereinafter more fully explained.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the hinge-joint and the side pieces between which the steps are fitted, whereby the parts of the ladder, when closed, are held securely together and form a chair, as hereinafter more fully-described.

In the accompanying drawing, A a is the seat of the chair. B b show the uprights at the back of the chair, the lower portions of which form the rear legs of the chair. 0 shows the front legs; and D d are the side pieces of the ladder.

The seat is made in two parts, A a, and hinged together by links 0, Fig. 2.

When the back of the chair is thrown over the front the chair-back B becomes the rear legs for the step-ladder, and the parts D d are unfolded and brought into line with each other, as shown in Fig. 2, the legs b aiding to support the upper steps, 4 and 5, and the several use the same, reference steps that are folded in and out of the way when used as a chair are brought into a position of regular order as the steps of a ladder.

By reference to the ,drawin g it will be seen that the part (I is formed or provided with a projection, j, which fits into a corresponding recess in the part D when the parts are brought together to form a chair. Now, to provide for the entranceof the projection f into its recess, the partsA aof the seat must be so hinged together as to allow the partA and its attachment some vertical play. To accommodate this I employ links pivoted at each end as the joint between the two parts of the seat.

When the ladder is closed the parts D d coming in contact the projection fraises the part D, so that the projection enters the recess and holds the parts securely together as a chair.

By these means a useful article of ordinary household use is readily converted into a stepladder for fixing up stove-pipe and windowcurtains, or for washing the wood-work and for various like purposes, and a more useful article of step-ladder is obtained for use in stores, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my improvement in combined stepladder and chair is The parts D d, hinged together by means of the links e, and provided with the projection f and recess therefor, when constructed and arranged as herein decribed.
