awuwwtoz ALBERT J. NUSLY, JR., OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO PINAFOUR TOY MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF CANTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913.
Application filed August 25, 1911. Serial No. 645,976.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. NUSLY, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of toys in which a receptacle is employed and to which receptable a pump stock is attached, said receptacle being so located with reference to the pump that when water is ele vated by the action of the pump it will fall into the receptacle.
The object is to provide a toy whereby water may be withdrawn by the action of the pump and returned to the receptacle to be again elevated by the pump.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which is shown in the accompanying drawing for the purpose of illustrating the invention.
In the accompanying drawingFigure 1 is a view of the pump proper. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the lower end of the pump stock and its valves showing the upper valve in section and the lower valve in side elevation.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the basin, which is preferably formed of the shape illustrated in the drawing, which basin is provided with the integral pump stock socket 2, which socket is for the purpose of receiving the lower end of the pump stock and holding said pump stock in an upright position or at practically right angles to the receptacle 1. The pump stock 3 is tapered at its bottom or lower end and the wall of the socket 2 correspondingly tapered so that said pump stock can be securely connected to the receptacle. Vithin the pump stock 2 is located the usual piston rod 1, which piston rod is provided with the piston valve 5, which piston valve is made up of the disks 6 and 7 between which disks is located the flexible valve disk 8. The eX- treme bottom or lower end of the pump stock 3 is provided with the intake aperture 9, which aperture is opened and closed by means of the ball valve 10, said ball valve resting upon the shoulder or valve seat 11.
The piston rod 4: is actuated by the handle 12, which handle is pivotally connected to the handle support 13, said handle support being connected or formed integral with the pump stock 3. The pump stock 3 is provided with the usual spout 14:, which spout is extended laterally from the pump stock 8 and located above the receptacle 1.
For the purpose of admitting water to the bottom of the socket 2 the chamber of the socket communicates with the receptacle 1. It will be understood that the bottom or lower end of the pump stock 3 should be spaced a short distance from the bottom of the receptacle 1 and is so spaced for the purpose of admitting water to the pump proper through the aperture 9.
It will be understood that as the water is withdrawn by the action of the pump from the receptacle it will be returned to the receptacle thereby, allowing the water to be pumped in what might be termed a continuous circuit, the water taken from the receptacle being returned to said receptacle. The lower valve consists of the rubber ball 10 and its metal valve seat 11. By forming the ball 10 of rubber and the valve seat of metal a perfect and complete closing of the valve is brought about during the downward stroke or the piston, but during the up stroke of the piston the ball is free to move upward by reason of the atmospheric pressure upon the water contained in the receptacle and by the partial vacuum caused by the upward movement of the piston valve.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a toy of the class described, the combination of a water receptacle provided with a pump-stock socket, the chamber of which communicates with the water receptacle, a pump-stock having located therein check and piston valves and provided with a spout, a piston-rod and a handle connected to said piston rod, and the delivery end of the spout located above the water receptacle connected to the pump-stock, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a toy of the class described, the combination of a water receptacle provided with a pump-stock socket, the chamber of which communicates with the Water receptacle, a hereunto subscribed my name in the prespump-stock havlng located therein a piston ence of tWo Witnesses.
valve means for operatin the piston valve and a check valve consisti g of a rubber ball ALBERT NUSLY 5 and a metal seating, substantially as and for WVitnesses:
the purpose specified. SYLVIA BORON, In testimony that I claim the above, I have F. W. BOND.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five certs each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
