Be it known thaty l, BENJAMIN F. Ban Lows, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Cleveland7 in the county of Cuyahoga and State of hio, have inventedy a certain new and useful linproven'ient in Spacer Selecting and .Releasing iil'echanism, ot which the following la full7 clear, and exactdescription.
This invention is intended to be used a part ot' justifying mechanism similar to that which terms the .rihjectI matt-er ot the Bellows Patent No. 797.549.
It, relates particularly to the mechanism .for selecting and releasing the justityine spacers, and may, with very slight modihcations ot the associated mechanism7 be substituted tor the spacer selectingF and releasingr mechanism oi that patent. lt is, however, more particularly an improvement in the spacer selecting and releasing mechanism which torms the subject. matter o t'A the Bellows Patent No. 895,231.

The selecting cylinder 14 is secured to a sha tt 16 which is mounted in suitable bean ings 18 so as to be capable ot rotation and ot In the surface ot' said cylinder are formed a number ot holes 13, which are placed at the intersections of imaginary longitudinal lines and circumferential lilies on the surface of said cylinder, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The number of longitudinal rows of holes is equal to the number ot teeth in a ratchet wheel 30 iixed to the said shaft; and this, when this mechanism is used in connection with such justifying mechanism as is shown in the patent referred to, is equal to the number ot units ot' shortage which' can be ilied outy in the line by the various combinations ot spacers which can be released trom the spacer channels. These holes will also be arranged in a `treaty number ot circumferential rows. lt, for example, the spacer channels are grouped in six magazines, the number ot circumterential rows ot' holes upon the cylinder will be six times the number ot spacer channels ein` ployed. Only a ten' ot these holes are shown: and no attempt has been made to show the precise location ot those which are shown. Another feature consists of a plurality of weighted pawls l0, one associated with each star wheel. One end ot each pawl lief in. the path ot` the arms on the star wheel. When the star wheel is turning in the direc tion to release a spacer, an arm litts the pawl and passes it readily, but, it by mischance the stary wheel be turl'ied in the, rc verse direction, this pawl by engaging with an arm of the star wheel limits the extent ot such movement so that no harm will be done.
