GAS-RANGE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application filed .Iune 16, 1911. Serial No. 633,601.
and FRANK K. BERRY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of, Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Ranges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of the invention to, obtain an increased number ofhvailable-burners on a gas range without increase in the size of the stove or the space limits which it occupies.
To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a gas range to which our improvement is applied; Fig. 2 is a section through the elevated burner portions of the range.
A is the frame of a gas range, B is the open top or hot plate mounted on a portion of said frame, and C is an oven mounted upon an adjacent portion thereof. As shown the open top asection is of sutiicient area for two burners D and E arranged in front and rear and provided with suitable gas controlling valves G at the front.
To-increase the number of burners without interference with those thus far described, and also without increasing the space, limits necessary for the installation ["1 burner H. This is arranged at the rear of v the open top portion of the range and adjacent to the oven C. The burner H is positioned beneath and adjacent a shelf I which 40 pan M.
of the range, we have provided an elevated is supported by a bracket J and rear wall K, the bracket being suflicientl-y cut-away to provide convenient access to the lower burner E. There is also provided below the shelf I and-burner H, a lower shelf L on which is supported the removable drip Inasmuch as the burner H is arranged i above the burner E it is evident that the draft created by the lower burner if permitted to find access to the upper burner, would interfere with the" proper operation thereof.v We have therefore guarded against this effect by placing ashield in front "of the. shelf L with only a sutliclent opening for the removal of the pan M.
This guard or deflector N is preferably slightly inclined outwardly and upwardly and will thus direct the ascending air current from the lower burner E away from the burner H. It is however, necessary to provide air for combustion in the burner H and this is accomplished by providing openings at the side or rear of the shelf.
As shown, perforations O are formed in the bracket J and also in the rear wall K which provide the necessary draft area for supplying the burner H with air.
With the construction as described all of the burners D, E and H may be used simultaneously without interference, and inasmuch as the burner H is below the plane of the top of the oven its presence does not increase the space occupied by the range.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. In a gas range, the combination with a frame of an open-top burner mounted on -a portion of said frame, an oven mounted on an adjacent portion of said frame, a seco-nd open-top burner positioned above the firstinentioned burner, a bracket extendin downward from said upper burner, an means extending between said bracket and said oven' for shielding the upper burner from the draft created by the first-mentioned burner, there being a draft com munication for said upper burner leading to the space out of the path of the draft created by the firstanentioned burner.
2. In a gas range, the combination of the frame, an open top burner mounted thereon, a hood extending upward from said frame and partially-covering said burner, a shelf above said hood, a burner'between said hood and shelf, and a shield for closing the front opening between said hood and shelf to exclude the draft from the lower burner. 1
3. In a gas range, the combination of the frame, an open top burner thereon, a shelf above said open top burner, a hood for said open top burner forming a support for said shelf, a burner below said shelf, a shield below and a shield in front of said burner, said hood having draft openings for said upper an adjacent portion of said frame, an upper In testimony whereof We afiix our signaburner positioned above the lower burner, a fures in presence of two Witnesses.
shelf for said upper burner, a Wall extending JOHN A ALEXANDER from said shelf downward to said frame, a FRANK BERRY bracket extending from said shelf downward 'to said frame, and a. shield for said upper Witnesses:
burner extending from said bracket to said JAMES P. BARRY, oven. VI. J. BELKNAP.
