Description

I W. T. JONES.
LAMP DOOR FASTENER. APPLIUATION FILED 1311014, 1911.
Patented Ap122'9, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT omca WILLIAM '1. JONES, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE EDMUNDS G'aJONES MFG. 00., 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
LAMP-DOOR FASTENEB.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, Winuaatl. Jonas, a citizen of the United'States, residing at 'Dtroit, in the county of-lvayne, State of doors of automobile lamps, and consists in. the construction and arrangement of pants hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed simple and efficient mea s for securely fastening the door of auto nobile lamps so door frame.
as to obviate .the rattlinglthereof, and atthe same time to so dispose the fastener as to afford a smooth exterior for the front of the lamp. The abovebbject is attained by the sti ucture illustratedin the accom panying drawings, in whichs Figure 1 is a top plan partly in 'horizon{ tal section of a lamp embodying my in vention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in section showing the positionof the parts with the door of the lamp unfastened. Fig.
3 is asimilar view showing the position of parts at the time of the initialen'gagement of the pivoted latch with the kesper in the Fig- 4 is a plan v ew of the latch with the actuating screw in section.
Referring to the characters of reference 1 designates the body of the lamp having a flaring forwardly extending portio 2 at the front. The door 3 carries the. usual glass or lens 4, and. is hinged to the b'pdy at 5 in any suitable manner. Within the frame of the door is a keeper 6 for entrance of the engaging end of the latch.
Mounted upon the inner wall of the w. flaring portion 2 f the lamp body are the par.- allel ears 7 between which the latch is pivoted upon a transverse pin 9 which passes through said ears and through the ears l0 struck from or formed upon the latch 8. The outer orengaging endof the latch'has about or hooked terminal 11- for-entrance Specification 6: Letters Patent. Application filed December 4, 1911. Serial no. 683,704.
The object of the invention is to provide into the keeper 6 of the door frame. The inner end of the latch is slotted, as shown at 12 in Fig. 4, to receive the reduced inner 'end 13 of an actuatin screw 14 which is threaded in a tapped 15 on the wall of the flaring portion of the lamp body. The outer end of said screw is provided with a-knurled head 16 to facilitate the manipulat-ion thereof. On the inner end of said screw is a small head 17 to prevent the screw drawing through the slot 12 in the latch 8. means of this arrangement a swiveled connection is formed between the inner end 'of'the latch and the actuating screw.
' To fasten the door the screw 14 is actuated so as to screw it inwardly through the boss 15. This movement of the screw act-uates the latch upon its pivot to cause the bent outer terminal thereof to enter the keeper 6 in the door frame, and draw said door forcibly into engagement with the jamb on the lamp body against which it closes. By straining the screw 14, after the door shall have been fully brought into contact with-the jamb, the parts. may be so securely fastened as to prevent rattling and 'ing loose. To release the door the screw is actuated so as .to run. it outwardly through the .threadedboss, thereby swinging the latch on its pivot to carry it freefrom the keeper the amb of the door, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Because of the power exerted by the sorewlal the door may be drawn into the e sed position from theposition shown in 1% 3, which illustrates the initial engageme t of the latch in the keeper. The running-pf the screw inwardly from this osition will compel a further entrance 0 the latch into the keeper, and will carry the door forcibly against the j'amb.
By'locatin'g the actuating screw in the rear' of thefiaring portion of the body, none front of the lamp. p
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A lamp dooh fastener comprising a ivoted latch mounted on the wall of the amp body, a door ame having a keeper obviate the possibility of the screw work= of the fastening parts are visible from the adapted to receive said latch, and a screw Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
threaded in the wait of the lamp body and the latch intothe keeper of the door frame.
2-. A lamp door fastener comprising a latch pivotally mounted on the inner wall of the lamp body, said latch having slot in its inner end, a door frame having a keeperadapted to receive the outer end of the latch, and an actuating screw threaded 10 in the Wall of the lamp body and swiveled at its outer end in the slot of said latch.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
