HAT-PIN PROTECTOR.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed March 6, 1912. Serial No. 681,967.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW Rnwr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented'a new and useful Hat'Pin Protector, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hat pin protectors, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a protecting member disposed to fit upon and grip the point of a pin, the point of the pin being concealed thereby and at the same time being prevented from slipping through the hat to accidentally lose the pin.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a pin with the protector connected thereto. Fig.2 is an elevation of a pin with the protector in section and detached therefrom. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the protector seated upon a pin point.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the pin body provided with the ornamental head 2 and with the pin 3, said point being provided with a circumferential groove 4. The hat pin protector embodies a member 5 having a reduced shank 7 projecting from one end, on which is mounted an ornamental head 6, which is. preferably conical to correspond with the conical head 2 of the pin. The member 5 is provided at its other end with a V-shaped recess extending to a point adj acent the butt end of the shank in order to provide a pair of tongues 8 having resilient tips. The tongues 8 are provided with knobs 9 at their tips and the outer sides of said tongues.
Disposed for sliding movement upon the member 5 and limited in its outward movement by means of the knobs 9 and its inward movement by means of the head 6, is a tubular sleeve 10, which when the protector is in the position against the knobs clamps the knobs 9 within the groove A of the pin, and thereby retains the protector in the desired position upon the point of the pin, the friction also serving to retain the sleeve in such contacting position. The sleeve is of such a length as to entirely surround and incase, or substantially so, the pin point thus protecting the same against any protrusion.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings it is evident that the pin point may be inserted between the projecting knobs 9 when the sleeve 10 is slid against the head 6 or with the sleeve pushed backwardly to free the tips of the tongues, so that the tips may flex away from each other or separate to receive the point of the pin, the knobs being adapted to snap into the circumferential groove in the pin. After the introduction of the pin point between the tongues 8, the sleeve 10 is slid outwardly to surround the outer portions of the tongues S and thus clamp the knobs 9 into the groove 4 of the pin point or lock the knobs 9 and tips of the tongues against yielding. The knobs 9 being locked within the circumferential groove 4 constrains the protector and pin from swinging relative to each other or from being separated. The novel construction of the protector provides for a number of advantages, which will be apparent from the foregoing taken in conncction with the drawings.
hat is claimed is:
A hat pin protector embodying a head, a member attached thereto and having a V- shaped recess in its outer end to receive the point of a hat pin and forming tongues having resilient tips and rigid butt ends, the outer sides of the tongues being parallel and the tongues having knobs at their tips to engage a circumferential groove of a hat pin, and a sleeve slidable on the tongues between the head and knobs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW REWI.
