HARROW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed. December 17, 1912. Serial No. 737,302.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn W. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bettie, in the county of Upshur and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Harrow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harrows, its object being to provide a structure of this character utilizing spring teeth and which can be employed either for gathering vegetation or for loosening the soil.
Another object is to provide a harrow utilizing an ordinary Wooden beam but which includes an all metal body structure having novel means whereby it can be assembled with the beam.
A further object is to provide improved means for attaching the teeth to the harrow.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-' scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the harrow. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the harrow and showing the means employed for connecting one of the tooth carrying bars to the intermediate beam. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the members of a tooth carrying structure. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section through a portion of the harrow. Fig. 6 is a detail view of a tooth.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a draft beam, preferably formed of wood and provided at its front end with a clevis such as shown at 2. Arranged under the beam 1 is a metallic beam 3 having a notch 4 in its lower edge adjacent the end thereof. This notched portion is adapted to receive an elongated eye 5 formed at the end of a bolt 6 which extends through the beam 1 and is secured thereto in any suitable mannera Spacing washers, such as shown at 7, may be interposed between the eye 5 and the beam 1.
Thus a clearance is left between beam 1 and beam 3 for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The foregoing arrangement of eyes and notches can be duplicated at the other end of the beam.
Secured tothe sides of the central beam 3 adjacent the rear ends thereof, are laterally extending rear beams 8 each preferably formed of angle strips. Channeled side strips 9 are arranged obliquely at the sides of the beam 3, the rear ends of these channeled strips being provided with laterally extending ears 10 bolted or otherwise fastened to the outer ends of the beams 8. The front ends of the strips 9 are provided with loops 11 and these loops extend around beam 3, they extending freely between said beam and the beam 1. These loops 11 are disposed close together upon the beam 3 and a stop screw 12 extends through beam 1 and h against the beam 3 directly back of the loops 11. The lower flange of each strip 9 is provided with notches 13, preferably V-shaped as shown and these notches are adapted to receive the arms of U-shaped teeth 14 formed of'spring metal. The crown portions of these teeth bear upwardly against the upper flange of the strip and, after the teeth have been assembled with the strips so that all of the notches 13 are occupied by certain of the teeth, a holding strip 15is placed below the upper flange of the strip 9 and bolted to the strip so as thus to force the teeth into the V-shaped' notches 13 and bind them upon the walls of the notches.
Additional tooth carrying strips 16 similar to the strips 9 may be interposed between intermediate portions of the beams 3 and 8, these strips 16 being parallel with the strips 9. It is designed, however, to bolt the front ends of the strips 16 to the beam 3 instead of fastening them thereto by means of eyes such as shown at 5.
Handles 17 are extended upwardly and rearwardly from the beam 3 and braces 18 connect these handles to the outer portions of the beam 8 as shown. An additional brace connects each handle with the adjacent strip 16.
It will be seen that a harrow, such as herein described, can be readily applied to a beam such as shown at 1 and, furthermore, the parts of the harrow can be readily assembled.
What is claimed is 1. A harrow including a central beam,
laterally extending rear beams connected thereto, channeled side beams connectedto central beam for coupling it to a draft beam.
2. In a harrow the combination with a draft beam of a central beam extending longitudinally thereunder, said beam having a notched" lower edge, means engaging the notched portions of said central beam for coupling it to the draft beam, spacing devices between the beams, laterally extending rear beams secured to the central beam, diagonally disposed tooth carrying beams connectedat their rear ends to the rear beams and at their front ends to the central beam, there being outstanding loops upon tliefront ends of the tooth carrying beams and extending around the central beam.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
