@MWD sra'rnfs PATE OFFICE.
LEWIS A. BROWN, 0F I-IORINE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO SPRINGFIELD CONCRETE POST i COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
MOLD.
city of Horine, county of Jefferson, and
State of Missouri, have invented a new and. useful Mold, of which the following is a This invention relates to molds, and more particularly to `molds for molding concrete into objects such as posts, columns, and the like.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a mold of strong and durable construction, which may be readily assembled in preparation for the manufacture of plastic articles 4and may be readily 'disassembled for removing the article, after being dried,
from the mold.
Other objects and features will be apparent from the following detailed description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated a pre-` ferred embodiment of my invent-ion, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of the mold set up to form a number of articles some of the compartments being filled with plastic material, others being empty. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. l is a perspective view of a portion of two of t-he mold compartments shown in assembled relation.
The mold comprises two side walls l rigid with and binding together the two end support-s 2 and also rigid with and binding together a number of intermediate cross members 3. This structure may be construct-ed in permanent form of such material as brick, concrete, metal or the like; or it may be constructed in portable form, in which event it is preferable to use in its construction wood or other light material, for obvious reasons.
To the upper face of each of the end supports 2 are rigidly secured a number of bearings l into each of which screws a threaded shaft 5. The inner end of each of said shafts 5, supports, by swivel connection, a presser plate 6; the outer ends of the shafts being provided with hand-wheels 7 whereby t-he shafts may be operated to move the desired. Removably resting on each end Speciicaton of Letters Patent.

partment is Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
' support 2 is an end plate 8 to whose inner faces are secured layers 9, of some suitable elastic material, such as rubber. canvas, or other fabricated material. possessing the essential quality of elasticity. The mold compartments 10 are arranged to rest upon the end supports 2 and upon the intermediate cross members 3 and when so arranged the end plates 8 are pressed against the ends of said compartments 1by manipulation of the shafts 5. In this way the mold compartments are 'held rigid in assembled adjustment or relation. The ends of the mold compartments press into the layers 9 of elastic material which `constitute seals for thev ends ofthe mold compartments so as to confine within the mold compartments the plastic materialfrom the time it is introduced therein in liquid or semi-liquid state, until it completely solidies.
Each mold compartment 10 comprises a channel portion, which ma, be of any desired dimensions or shape. ilach mold compreferably formed with flanges ll on the upper edges of the walls thereof; the arrangement being such that the flanges of one compartment will fit alternately under and over the flanges of the adjacent compartments, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and l of the drawing. It is obvious that as many compartments as desired may be provided and that in assembled relation they constitute a multiple mold, wherein any number of articles may be cast at one time. The mold compartments l0 are preferably made of durable metal, so that they may be used repeatedly without becoming worn.
In use the mold is assembled as shown in Fig. l of the drawing. The compartments are then filled with plastic material for forming the articles desired, and it will be apparent that the surface in contact with the metallic mold compartments will conform with the smooth surface thereof and the eX- posed upper surface may be readily smoothed with a cement trowel or other device. After the articles solidify, the threaded shafts 5 are operated to move the presser plates 6 away from, and permit removal of, the end plates 8 so as to release the articles and permit their removal from the molds.
A. mold of this character is durable and convenient to operate and the articles cast therein are uniformly well-shaped and smooth. The mold compartments may be Varied in shape and number and dimensions and I do not restrict myself to any specific number or form of mold compartments or to other identical details of construction or arrangement, for it is obvious that several alterations and changes may be made withlout departure from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is- `1. A mold comprising a frame composed of two relatively wide end supports arranged parallel with each other, a number of cross members between said supports in the same horizontal plane with said supports, and two side walls rigid with said supports and with said cross members and having their ends inwardly from the outer edges of said supports, inv combination with an end plate mounted and arranged to slide edgewise upon each of said supports, mold compartments of equal length with said side walls mounted between said side walls and resting upon said end supports and upon the said cross members and having their open ends inwardly from the outer edges of said supports and from said end plates, a layer of fabricated elastic material secured to the inner face of each of said end plates, and threaded shafts carried by said end supports for moving said end plates to press said elastic material against the ends of said Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of supports and terminating inwardly from the outer edges of said end supports, bearings mounted upon said end supports, threaded shafts revolubly mounted in said bearings, presser plates slidably mounted upon said end supports, swivel connections holding said threaded shafts and said presser plates* permanently together, end plates between said presser plates and the ends of said compartments, a layer of fabricated elastic material attached to the inner surface of each of said end plates, and means for operating said shafts and said presser plates to compress said fabricated material againstithe ends of said mold compartments, substantially as specified.
In witness whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
