Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN KEITH REID, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Open-Fireplace Dampers, of
which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in open fireplace dampers and the object of the invention is to devise a damper for an open fireplace which may be operated from the front outside of the chimney hearth, which can be adjusted into any position and which will stay in such position when adjusted.
A further object is to leave the center of the chimney free so that there is no obstruction to the draft when fully opened and at no period when partially open will it obstruct the center of draft which is more intense and has more force and when the damper is closed will completely stop all draft.
A further object is to make a damper cheap to manufacture in such a form that may be readily adjusted to any chimney and which consists essentially of a rectangular plate frame having an upwardly extending flange around the opening thereof, bearings located at each end of the frame and in proximity to each side thereof, wing dampers journaled in the bearings to each side of the frame so as to meet over the center of the frame opening in an inclined position and a push rod extending through the breast of the chimney and connected to the wing dampers so as to throw them simultaneously upwardly toward the vertical position as hereinafter more particularly explained by the following specification.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is a portion of the chimney provided with the usual hearth opening A and arch and breast A A is an opening extending through the breast above the arch.
B is a rectangular frame plate designed to rest at each end and at the back upon an inwardly projecting portion of the masonry of the chimney. The central opening B of the plate is provided with a flange B extending upwardly from the frame plate around the opening thereof. The flange B is provided at each end with an upwardly extending inverted V-shaped projection B.
B and B are bearings preferably forming part of the plate frame provided with a recess B.
C and G are the win s of the damper provided with trunnions designed to enter and bear in the recesses B in the bearings B and B. The outer edge of each of the wing dampers G and C bear upon the top of the flange B E is a nail or pin cast at one end in each of the bearings B and B to one side of the recess B The trunnions C are inserted within the recess B and the pins or nails are bent over the trunnions C so as to retain them in place within the recess.
F is a cross bar extending across the opening of the plate frame substantially centrally thereof.
F is a lever pivoted centrally on the cross bar F by the pin F C and 0* are hollow bosses cast upon the wings of the dampers C and C C and C are links pivotally connected at one end to each end of the lever F and are connected at their opposite end to the wing dampers G and C by pins C extending through the hollow bosses C and (l and the links C and C.
G is the slotted plate secured above the arch of the chimney so that the opening thereof registers with the opening A extending through the arch of the chimney.
H is a push bar extending through the opening A of the chimney breast and an opening I formed in the flange B of the chimney damper. The push bar H is pro vided with ratchet notches H designed to engage with the slots of the plate G. The inner end of the push bar is loosely connected by a pivot H to the lever F.
From this description it will be seen that all that is necessary to do in adjusting the damper is to raise the push bar upwardly so as to'free it from the slot of the plate G when it may be pulled outwardly to any position so as to throw the wings C and C of the damper upwardly toward the vertical position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
From this description it will be seen that I have devised a damper which may be readily adjusted from outside the chimney breast so as to leave the chimney free from obstruction and so that the center of draft Will not be interrupted When the damper is only partially opened.
What I claim as my invention is:
In combination With a chimney, a damper comprising a frame having bearings, longitudinally extending flanges between said bearings, inverted V-shaped projections on said flanges near the ends of said frame, said projections adapted to support damper Wings, a horizontal bar extending across the frame centrally thereof, a lever pivotally connected to said cross bar intermediate its length, damper Wings pivotally supported on said bearings, means for connecting said lever to said damper Wings, a slotted'plate, and a notched push bar extending through the slot and loosely connected to said lever.
