Description
EEST AVAELABLE CQP UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL MARSHALL GREENIDGE AND ALCINOUS YOUNG WRIGHT, OF DOUGLAS, ARIZONA.
noon-STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 191 3.
Applicntionled July 18, 1912. Seria] No. 710,237.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, SAHUEL MAnsHALL Gin-:axiom: and ALciNons YOUNG lVnioH'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Douglas, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements' in Door-Stops, of which the ollowinqr is a specification.
Our invention reiates to an improvement in door-stops, and the object is piovide a sim )le device operable by turning the doorkno to hold the door open at any angle.
'With this object in view our invention consists in a lever attache tothe knobhandle or shank in connection with means controlled b said levei' for checking and holding the oor at the desired position the instant the knob is released.
Our invention further consists in means controlled by the door-knob for holding the door at any angle desired in connection with means for automatically locking said firstmentioned means when not in use and for automatically releasing it when it is to be again thrown into operative position.
Our invention still further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a View in side elevation with the casing removed to show the interior construction and the vai'ious operating parts of our improved stop.
A represents the door-knob handle or shank; and B is a lever mounted thereon.
I) is a flexible connection such as a chain extending from the outer or free end of the lever B to the )langer E, which latter is slidably mounted in a suitable easing C actuated by s )rin f F. This plunger E carries a rubber-plug at the bottom in position to engage the floor, the easing C being held on the door near the lower end by screws or other means K, K.
Within the casing, a catch H is pivoted at R. About midway between the ends, this catch has a shoulder N in position to enga e and take under a lu M projecting lateralgiy from the plunger w en the catch I-I is held in the osition shown in the drawings by the s ring I, the purpose of this shoulder N being to hold tie rubber plug G of the )lunger outI of contact with the floor when it is the desire to make the door-stop inoperative. The upper end L of the catch rojeets inwardly in the path of the lug ii so that by turninf1r the door-knob to raise the lever I3, lug hf is caused to strike the end L of the catch, forcing the catch aside, and the free end of the spring I drops into the recess or socket J which it fits, where it remains withholdinfT the shoulder N from the path of the lug Si, ermitting the rubber plug to engage the oor when the knob is released, due to the action of the spring l?. After passing the shoulder N, the lug M finds the lower end O of the catch I-I in its path, and striking it the catch is swung to the position shown in the drawing with the shoulder N ready to rengage the lug M when the latter shall have been raised to a point above it.
It is evident that other catching means might be employed as well as modifications made in the mechanism of the plunger and accessories, and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact construction herein set forth, but.:
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is
1. The combination with a movable phinger having a lug thereon, and means for actuating said plunger, of a pivoted catch having three portions, one of which is always in the path of the lug on the plunger, and at least two of which may be in the path of the ilunger, whereby the catch automatically iolds or releases the plunger according to the manipulation of the meansl which actuates the plunger.
2. The combination with a movable plunger, means connected with a door-handle,
and a connection between said means and the plunger for controlling the latter, of a movable catch having an intermediate shoulder and its ends in )osition in the path of a portion of the plunger, and a spring connected with the catch for swinging the catch or holding it in one of its positions.
3. The combination with a movable pliiugrr .having a lug thereon, and means for moving the planner in opposite directions, of a pivoted catci cni'i ,'ing a shoulder and having the shoulder and both ends in position to be engaged by the lug on the plunger, In testimony whereof we afiix our signa- :ind n spring connected with the catch for tures, in the presence of two Witnesses. Swingin" it into its normnl osition, sne. Y spring cinstrncted and ndnptel to hold the IDGE' catch ont of its normal position until the L lower end of the catch is struck by the lug lYVitneSSes:
when the catch is automatically caused to re- D. O. RICHARDSON, sinne is normal position. FRANK lV. DOAN.
