Description

s. GASSER. RAIL HOLDER.
I APPLICATION FILED APR. 24, 1912.
Patented Apf. 22, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SANFORD GASSER, Q12" SHERMAN, MICHIGAN;
[BAIL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A pr. 22, 191 3.
Application filed April 24, 1912. Serial No. 693,001.
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SANFORD GAssEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of- \Yexforcl and State of Michigan, have'inventecl certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawin This iment-ion relates to rail bonds and is used to connect railroad rails between the ties, the object of the invention being to prevent the rails from spreading.
'In the drawings I have shown a number of modified forms of this rail bond but it is to be noted thatthey all work on the same principle, the bar being placed beneath the rails and the 'rail engaging blocks being then connected with the bar, with their overhanging ends engaging the bases of the rails.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters-of reference indicate like parts in the severalviews,.and: Figure 1 is a side'ele\-'a t-ion-of the rail bond with the rails shown-in sect-ion. ,Fig. '2 is 'a sectional view taken through the rail bond along the line 2-2,
' Fig; Fig.3 is" a view similar to l ig. 2
showing a modified. form' of bar and block.
., Fig; 4 ".is a perspective view of the block,
showninpl ig.-3.-Fig; -5 is a perspective iew o f one end the bar whichis shown inl i'ii. a
- Re ei'ring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that thisdevice is intended to be used tomnnect the rails 10 bet ween the ties 1 \so that danger of the rail spread- .a i.. \ng nr-eiiserthesecurmg spikes work loose is (a: ninateu "ltvery often happens that the spi (es which connect the, rails with the tics .iork loose and the rails become spread so that; trains are wrecked, thus causing a great loss'of property and life.
In lfilig's. l and 2 .l have shown one form oi. rail bond in which thereis provided the ho]- low bar 12 which is provided with openings "adjacent each end through which securing bolts-13 are passed; A block l4- whii-b is provided with a curved lower face 15 is placed upon each 0f the bolts 13 and has its overhanging lip lti engaging the rail base so that the bar-12 will be rigidly connected with the rails. Nuts 17 are screwed upon the bolts, and the blocks are securely held in place. It will thus be seen that after the rail bond is in position that the rails cannot spread, they being held in spaced relation by the blocks mounted upon the ends of the bar '12, and thus be prevented from either spreading or moving toward each other.
In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 l. have shown a modification the bar 2t being hollow similar to the bar 12, but being provided with longitudinally extending ribs at the points at which the rail engaging blocks 23 rest. These blocks are provided with curved lower faces from which there extends the ribs 24 whieh fit between the ribs 22. The
blocks 23 are each provided with an opening bolt'QT may be passed through the bar and. block to securely hold the block in place.
it should be noted thatv these ribs 22 and 24 prevent any lateral play of the block 'upon the bar, thus preventing the nut. 28 from working loose. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
A device of the character described, coinprisinga, bar having perforations adjacent; to each end, rail engaging blocks at each end of said bar having their lower faces curved lo lit. the contour of the bar, said bh'n-ks'beiog provided 'with openings registering with the openings formed through said bar, and securing bolts passing through said bar and blocks to hold said blocks in position, 7
in testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in presence of twoavitnesses.
