HENRY M; LOO'MIS, CLAVERACK, NEW YORK.
HUSKING-ROLL FOR COBN-HUSKING MACHINES.
Application filed January 10, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. LOOMIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claverack, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Husking- Rolls for CornHusking Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in corn husking rolls for husking machines of the type illustrated in Patent No. 705,(70, July 29, 1902, and ithas for its object to provide rolls which shall completely removethe husks from the ears, and which are rigid and strong and capable of withstanding rough usage.
To these ends the invent-ion consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts all as will be' now described and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of the invention,Figure 1 is a perspective view of roller constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section through two of the cooperating rolls.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The letter A in'dicatesone of the rollers, preferably made of hard wood in solid halves and mounted on metal cores or shafts a, Fig. 2, the halves being clamped in position by bolts B, shown in dotted lines. The rolls are arranged in pairs, as shown in Fig. 2, and the number of pairs employed is immaterial.
Embedded in the rolls and secured in place by means of screws or other suitable fastening means C, are a series of longitudinal channel bars or strips D, substantially U-shaped in cross section, the flat surface of the strips being flush with the periphery of the rolls, forming longitudinal fiat surfaces which are so arranged that the surface on Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 741,283.
one roller will cooperate with the flat surfaces on the companion roller.
Projecting beyond the face of'one of the strips D, are a series of husking pins E, arranged longitudinally of the strip, which are adapted to enter a recess or groove in the cooperating roll. In the present instance this recess or groove is formed by a U-shaped channel bar or strip F, similar to the strip D, but inverted, and let into the periphery of the roller with the side flanges substantially flush with the periphery of the roll. The strips F are secured to the roll by means of screws G or other suitable fastening means, hoops or bands H, being also applied to the ends of the rollers encircling the ends of all of the strips.
The rollers as before mentioned are arranged in pairs, and are run at the same speed so that the pins on one roller will enter the groove on the cooperating roller.
From the above description it will be seen that the roll is strong and rigid and easily manufactured.
By having the flat metal cooperating surfaces the shucks on the ears are allowed to drop below the periphery of the roller so that the husking pins may more easily grasp the husks and carry them down between the rollers thereby tearing the husks from the ears.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A husking roll for corn husking machines, having flattened surfaces on its periphery extending from end to end of the roll formed by Ushaped metal strips embedded in the roll with the flat surface of the strip flush with the periphery of the roll, husking pins projecting beyond the face of one of the strips, and a U-shaped metal strip embedded in the roll and extending the length thereof, the outer edges of the flanges of the strip being flush wit-h the periphery of the roll whereby a longitudinal groove in the face of the roll is formed.
HENRY M. LOOMIS.
