Specification of Letters Patent.
lletented @to To all 1li/linmfef may l;
come own tiiot deseen if, ect of the Fling of Greet Britdi. Connaught street, Northind, have invented certain new end use'tu .improvements in 'the Manufactnre of loe-Qeses or Toe-Boxes for Boots ind Shoes., of Wliieh the following is e `oiieeiion7 reference being had therein to o enying drawing.
invention rei-etes to toe ceses or toe 1' boote and shoes and consists of .vement in the manufacture of a of resilient toe case or toe hox nosed of e known material viz,
-ng to this invention it is proposed facture articles of the kind above nl he roede on the seine lest with practically eny sii pe or forni of toe, thus as the fashion p in toes ehonrgje, manufacturers may produce on their exi Zing lasts boots and shoes heving the desired style of toe, thus avoiding expense of new lasts for each different shape or forni of toe.
'.loe Ceses or toe boxes of the kind with which this invention is concerned are made in mold and in carrying 'the invention. into effect that eert of the mold which forms the inteiim7 of the article is made the mold is made aoeording lto the desired shape of torni of the exterior of the article. By eltefing the'lest mentioned `mold partcoses of? difieren?, shape exteriorly out oi? the saine interior shape may he produced.
ln order that the invention may he readily understood'referenee will made in theA from. t ie lest itsell' While the other port of clearly seen.
3 is o section teiten on the line o d of Fig. l.
Fig-.j #l is e vertical section through o mold for ninltiug the toe, cose. Fig. 5 is :i plon of sm'i'inold. Fig. tl is o vertical see/tion of e.y nold for producingr o differently shaped toe to that lshown in Fig. il.
Figs. l to-B are dra-Wn to a larger scale than, Figs. to 6 and like parts ore designated loy the seme reference characters throughout' the drawing.
The resilient toe case is molded on the inside l exactly to the shape of the toe end oi the lost While according to this inventionfand will he hereinafter described, the outside 2 is molded to the required shape ofthe toe of the hoot or shoe.
The toe case being thus-molded end vul- (ionized or set to shape will. not only fit upon the last i Tithout requiring to he shaped or conformed thereto during the process of melting the hoot or shoe but will also maintain the original shape or forni of the hoot or shoe toe, that is to say, although the resilient toe cese or toe box will permit the toe of the hoot to be compressed or otherwise yield to pressure nevertheless it will always resume its original shape when the pressure is removed.
The toe oase is formed in a mold of the kind comprising e holloWport-ion 3 and u core portion l (Figs. 4 and 6) the two parte tilting together such for example es by ineens of dewels 5 in the well known inanner. y
lin Constructing the inold the shaped core portion el is formed by making an iron or other metal casting from the toe end of the last on which the hoot is to be made said lest being previously fitted up 'e'. e. Inode deeper on the foce so as to produce :1 mold portion of sufficient depth to form the turning in allowance 6 on tjhe edge of the toe case. ln Fig. 2 the toe end of the lest is vindicated by dotted lines so that the additional material provided for turning in during the process of making the boot may he rlhe hollow portion 3 of the mold is made in any suitable manner this being shaped to the required outside forni of the toe.
As will he clearly seen by referenoe to Figs. 4f end, by van; ing the shape of the hollow poifi'on different s epos moy he produced, Wit-hout 31 of t e mold toe ceses of.
however' altering the interior shape and therefore the same last may be used for making boots having di'erent shapes or fashions of toes. The molded toe cases or toe boxes are secured in the boot during the formation of the latter in the usual way.
In the example of toe case illustrated in the drawing the turning in allowance 6, at the lpointed end of the toe case, has small sections of a V shape as shown at 7 taken out, the object of the openings thereby produced being to prevent any accumulation of surplus material and to facilitate the lastingof the extreme end of the toe. f The openings 7 are however sometimes omitted.
Instead of a mold such 'as shown in Fig. 5 adapted to produce only one toe case at a time,v a mold capable of reducing a number of toe cases may be used).
Whatl I claim then is The process of producing a plurality of molded toe caps all having the same internal contour and dileringexternal contours, consisting in successively molding such a plurality of caps from a plastic composition in a mold having a male die having a molding face of unvarying contour and a succession of female dies lhaving molding faces shaped to give the desired external contours to the caps, and then setting the caps in their molded shapes.
In testimony whereof I alix my signa- -ture in presence of'two Witnesses.
JOSEPH HENRY BROWN.
