DEVICE FOR PREPARING JACQUARD-CARDS OF EMBROIDERING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 19, 1911.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913. Serial No. 633,964.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIPPOLYT SAURER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Arbon, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preparing Jacquard-Cards of EmbroideringMachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for preparing jacquard cards for embroidering machines.
According to this invention a rectilinear motion in any direction is imparted to one point of a pantograph and converted into motions of two other points of the pantograph, the motions forming components and being in rectilinear, fixed courses arranged at an angle to each other.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows in side elevation one form of the device, Fig; 2 is a plan view of the same partly in section.
1 is one point of the pantograph, which carries the pin in a suitable manner. The arms 2 and 3 pivoted to each other are pivoted to rods 1 and 5 which are pivoted to the point 1. The ends 6 and 7 of the arms 2 and 3 are pivoted to gear racks 8 and 9. The rack 8 is guided vertically in a straight fixed course and engages a toothed wheel 10 whichs's connected to the cylinder 11 of the perforating device. This cylinder produces the perforations in the jacquard card for the vertical component. The rack 9 is guided horizontally in a straight fixed course and engages a toothed wheel 12 which is connected to another cylinder 13 producing the perforations for the horizontal. component.
let is the pattern board. The cylinders 11 and 18 engage punching devices 20 and 21 by which the strip shaped acquard card 22 is perforated correspondingly to the pattern. The strip 22 is guided by a pulley 23 and impelled by suitable means in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 1. The pulley 23 is mounted on a slide 2% and horizontally displaceable in a direction at right angles to the jacquard card 22 by suitable means 25.
To the slide 24 is pivotally connected a U-shaped rod 26, the central part 26 of which passes through all punches so that the punches are caused to be drawn back automatically all at the same time but are adapted to be singly engaged by the cylinders and to be singly transferred to their working position.
If the point 1 is moved in a straight line as much as 2 (Fig. 1) the motion is converted at the points 6 and 7 into two components of positive or negative values rectangular to each other and corresponding to the dimensions of the pantograph. The point 6 being at the pivotal connection of rod 2 with the rack 8, will move this rack vertically a distance representing the vertical component of line a. The rack correspondingly rotates gear wheel 10, which rotates the pin cylinder 13 and thereby rotates a certain pin or set of pins thereon into operative position. At the same time point 7 which is the pivotal connection between rods 3 and rack 9 will move rack 9 horizontally a distance representing the horizontal component of the line a rotating wheel 12 and cylinder 11 to rotate a pin or pins thereon into operative position. After positioning the drums the slide 24: is moved by its mechanism 25 toward the punches 20 and the card carried by the slide moves the punches toward their respective drums. Those punches that are moved by the card and have drum pins in alinement therewith punch holes in the card indicating the vertical and horizontal components of the line 2 all others, having no pins in alinement therewith, are inoperative. Corresponding to these components motions of rotation of positive or negative values are transmitted to the cylinders 11 and 13.
I claim:
1. In a jacquard card punching machine, the combination with two sets of punches and their controlling mechanisms; of a rectilinearly movable device for operating each controlling mechanism, said devices operating at right angles to each other, and a pantograph for moving and determining the extent of movement of said devices in accordance with the components of the tracer point of the panto-graph.
2. In a jacquard card punching machine, the combination with a pair of pin drums one of which cooperates in the punching of the cards for components in one direction and the other of which cooperates in the punching of cards for components of a stitch and at an angle to the aforementioned direction; of a pantograph, and mechanisms between two different points of the pantograph and the drums to simultaneously impart rotation to said drums corresponding to two similar components of the direction of movement of the pantograph tracer point.
8. In a jacquard card punching machine, the combination with punches, means for controlling the punches representing one component of movement and similar means 'for controlling punches for another component of said movement; of a pantograph, two rods of which are movable in directions corresponding to components of the movement of the tracer of the pantograph, and
mechanism operatively connected to said rods to operate said controlling means.
4. In a jacquard card punching machine, the combination with two sets of punches and two sets of punch controlling means; of a pantograph, two rectilinearly movable racks at an angle to one another, a rod of said pantograph pivotally connected to each rack, and mechanism connecting a rack anda controlling means, whereby both components of the movement of the tracer point of the pantograph are simultaneously transmitted to the respective controlling means.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
