HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed August 7, 1912. Serial No. 713,907.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT C. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat pins and more particularly to pins of this class which are provided with detachable heads, the object of the invention being to provide a pin of this character whereby difl'erent lengths of pins may be used with one head or various assortments of heads may be used upon one pin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hat pin of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fullydescribed, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a detail perspective View of a hat pin constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, the head of the pin being removed; and Fig. 3 1s a top plan view, the head of the pin being removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the securing plate which is provided with an upwardly extending end 2 to which the head of the pin is secured in any suitable manner.
Formed integral with the plate at the upper end thereof and extending upwardly at right angles therefrom is a sleeve 3 adapted to receive the end of the pin opposite the pointed end t,'said end being looped and disposed at right angles to the shank of the pin 5. The lower end of the plate 1 is provided upon the side thereof opposite the sleeve 3 with an inwardly curved portion 6 forming a suitable engaging hook behind which the shank of the pin is engaged to hold the plate securely upon the end of the pin. In securing the plate to the end of the pin, the end of the pin is first inserted within the sleeve 3, and the shank of the pin is then engaged behind the hook 6, the looped portion of the pin affording sufficient resiliency to allow the pin to be engaged behind the hook 6 and securely hold it in place.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple, durable and serviceable hat pin whereby various lengths of pins may be used with one head or various assortments of heads may be used with one pin, and it will be further seen that the pins can be quickly and easily attached to or detached from the heads.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a pin, having its head end looped and the extreme end thereof disposed at right angles to the body portion, of a plate having a sleeve formed integral therewith to receive the end of the pin, and means to engage the shank of the pin to securely fasten the plate to the head of the same.
2. The combination with a pin, having its head end looped and the extreme end thereof disposed at right angles to the body portion, of a plate having a sleeve formed integral therewith and extending at right angles thereto to receive the end of the pin and an inwardly curved portion formed upon the opposite side of the plate and adapted to receive the shank of the pin to securely fasten the plate to the head of the pin.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT G. MARTIN.
