'Specification ot Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.` 22,1913.
.application nieu May 9,1911. serial: No. $25,938.`
To all whom it mayconcem.'
Be it known that wefALBERT W. SMITH, of` Oakland, Alameda.v county, California, and SIERLING W. SMITH, of Berkeley, Alalmeda county, California, both citizens of the United States, have invented new and usefull counterbalancing;cushion; to Aprovide a de-` vice to permit the door or'panel upon which the bedis mounted to be vertically adjusted and `which partly carries the load of the structure; and to provide improved head and foot structures for foldable beds.
Among other objects of the invention it is` intended -to provide ai supporting and counterbalancing structure for beds which is substantial, very simply andeasily operated. The` invention consists of the parts `and the construction andz'combination of parts,
as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the' accompanyin drawingsn whichigure 1 is a side elevation of the bed in lowered position. Fig.` 2 is a side elevation of the bed m vertically adjusted position.
' Fig. 3 is a plan view of the'structure. Fig.`
4 is an end view of the head of the bed.
Inthe illustrated embodiment `of. our in- 40 vention 2 represents a door `or panel of the 4 closet in a wall or partition; the oor being` doorwlich may be suitably 4supported for movement with relation to an o ening` or such,fo`r instance, as an article of furniture,
here represented as a bed 5, may be adjustably supported upon the movable panel` 2, and whic mechanism is designed to assist in accomplishing the movement or adjustment of the article or bed 5 with the greatest `ease compatible with safety and durability. To this end there `isattached to the door by appropriate means, as screws 6 or other fasteningdevices, a pair of brackets or stationary `supports 7, projecting transversely from a `face of the panel 2 and having pivots 8 elevated sufficiently above the plane of the floor to allow a bed, represented at 5, to
swingfroni rthe horizontal positioninto the vertical osition; the clearance below the pivots 8 y which the bed is supported upon the brackets 7 being suilicient to permit the head portion 10 of the bed to swing below` the pivots.
A lar e portion 4of the weight of the door or pane 2 `and the bed 5 is supported by swivel casters 11 `whichlare mounted in the brackets 7 and which may be adjusted verti` cally by means of screws 12 fastened in the.`
brackets; the purpose of the adjustmentsbe ing to `compensate for unevenness in the plane above which the door 2 may move and for other causes tending to throw the door out of alinement.
YThe bed 5 may be constructed of any suitable material and maybe of suitable length and width.
To facilitate the operation and lowering` of the bed about its pivot 8, there is connected to the end of the bed adjacent to the head, telescopic links comprising external cylinders 13 and cylinders 14 slidable in the exert adownward pressure upon the heady portion of the bedbetween the pivots 8 and the door 2; the result of which pressure is to 4tend to lift the bed from thehorizontal position shown inFig. 1 to the vertical osition shown in` Fig. 2. Preferably thel orce of the sprin is `not suiiicient to automatically swing t e bed upwardlyand it is necessary for a person to apply `some power to the bed 5 has been turnedinto the vertical.
v-assistthe lifting action of the springs when' the bed'is to be lifted to the vertical position.
During the upturningfaction o-fthev bed the link sections 14 slide outwardly from the 'eX- ternal portions 13 which` are connected by pivots-17` in brackets 18 tothe door 2.` When position` thel pressure of the expansible springs 16 in the telescopic links is sufficient to sustain the bed in its adjusted' position.
When the bed is to .be turned to the hori-v zontal position the lpower ofA the `operator applied to. the portion` above the pivots 8 is `suiicient to easily pull the bed down to the' horizontalposition.r As the bed is swungk downwardly a compression of-air occurs in the interior of the link sectionsn13 and `14 whichV performs the function of acting' as a check Vto prevent Athe-bed from dropping violentlyto the oor. This is a very important` feature in that it acts as a safety device to revent a person from being injuredby t e swinging motion ofrthe bedv 5 Y as `it is lowered.
pivots 8. This means in thepresent in:
If desired the bed maybe provided with lan upwardly projecting headboard 19 which` is. longitudinally divided and hingedly connected, as at. 20, so that the upper portion 21 of the headfboard may fold against the front of the panel 2 when the bed 5 is adjusted to the vertical position.
A spring l22 .connected at one end to the upper edge of thejoldable section 2l' ofthe bed and connected 1also fto thepanelg2 sus tains the foldableection 21 in its several positions against too free a movement.:
Another important feature of` the `present invention is in the vmeans. forl supporting kthe outer end of the bed when thelatter is adjusted in the horizontal position about the stance comprises a -foot-frame^23, provi-ded.
with casters y24: at its lower ends, and brackf ets. At lthecentral portion of the legmemlbers of the foot `there are providedppivots 25 upon which arevinounted links26'adaptk ed `to extend in aparallel ositionbeneath 'and be connected to the ra' s -vof' the bed by pivots 27.l When the bed is folded 4,downfto the horizontal position vthe links 26, of whichl i there `is one on'zeach'xside of the bed adjacent to the foot, lie beneath the rails of the bed. Ther foot-portion 23 when adjusted at right angles tothe bed rails is braced in position bybrace links 28 whicharepivoted. to the leg xportions of the foot-frameat 29, and at their opposite ends arepivoted at 30 to the rails of the bed 5.` The an lar relation 1 of 'the bracing 1links 28 andf t e adjustable f lifted on the fulcrums' 8 the foot-frame 23" yfulcrum links 26 is fsuch that when` the bed hasl been adjusted tothe .horizontal position it is impossible to push the foot-frame inwardly; under the bed, `but as the bed ;.is
the ful'crums 27 and `30 sothat byt 'into parallelism with-and against the rails of Vthe bed 5.
. y '70` Therelis one -of the rpneumatic checking I devices on each side Of-thefhead of the bed and they are .here shown as connected'to4 the bed through `the linstrumentality of lateral braces or arms 31 secured to the sides of; the
bed, though manifestly the pivots 15 which are at v,the'vends of the arms 31 `may be mounted in any uponthe frame ofthe bed 5.
` In operation whenthe panel or 'door2 is kmoved into position, as. i desired, the vupwardly extending bed-lmay be pulled for-` wardly and downwardly 4about its fulcrums suitable `manner directly 8 and the rapidity of its" motionl checked by 1v means kof the pneumatic cushion devices formed by the telescopic liiik lsections 13 and 14:. Asthe bed is pulled,` downwardly and forwardly the foot-framer23 Vis adjusted so that b f the time the Vbed `is parallel-with'the `Hoor t e casters 24 of` the foot-frame 23: will contact with-the floor and the bracinglinks v28 adjusted'to support the 'foot-fraine 23 against accidental'movementas regards the pivots 25.
The dash-'pot or air cushions forli-ledv Iby the link sections 13l areprovided with valves 32 ywhereby airlmay be admitted tothe inl terior of. the cylinders las the sections 14; move downwardly; but at the instant Aafreversal of motion of the links 14 occurs and pression of air occurs, the downward movement of the bed is checked. f
Any suitable form of latching device may bev provided whereby the 'bed may be tempoposition. A 4simple form :of this restraining devicey is illustrated in lFig.2, which com` prises a spring latch-or` equivalent device-33,
which may -be secured either to the foot por-g they move into the sections 13, and l3com;`
r-arilyI restrained in its `vertically adjusted tion of the bed ror to the supporting panel `i 2, as here indicated. -i The `function of the latchingdevice is to retain ,the-bed in: its
upper position toi prevent it from acci-f .dentally falling, or fromwswinging too freely about its pivots 8.
I The adjustablevfoot-framel `23 of the bed may be temporarily latched tothe foot porf tion of the bed frame by a suitableform oi?l resilient latchingor clamping device, as in-i:
dicated 'at 34. l
